Edited by: riverini on 10/05/2011 14:20:06 As many of you know EN24 is under severe DDoS right now, three weeks already (internet spaceboats.. ), we would like to thank all those players who have keep giving us their support, we are still publishing and if you are not able to get your daily evenews fix in the main website, you can get it here:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/eveonlinenews24
While I find hard for the kiddies to take down feed burner server, we have already setup several other alternatives just in case..
This is a temporary thing, yet it will make the DDoS pointless as the information will break out anyways.
We are setting up several mirrors and those who would be interested in hosting mirrors, feel free to email me at [email protected]

I agree, the ones really losing here is the Eve-O community, I got enough RL projects where to invest my EN24 time that it really doesn't matter to me, yet I know a lot of guys love the site and we'll keep it up for them.

Or just randomly every couple of days delete all nameserver records and let the domain go nowhere, great way to get them to waste their payed for DDOS.

It's a bit more complicated than that, George Nada and the security has been dealing with this extensively, and u need tokeep in mind, we had never stopped being DdoS, it just that the attack increased in intensity, renting a botnet it's an expense, so someone is losing money for this already , redirecting the attack would turn me into a liability for intentionally DoSing another site, which is quite ilegal, it's quite tempting but ilegal, the guys from Gigenet and 4web has been amazing in helping out.
Other sites are being hit too, although not with this intensity.

I'd love to see you temorairly use a yahoo, or google product
Think of seeing EvE in the news for the international incident.
I can see the headline in the NYTimes
Russians Attack Yahoo Destrucion of Spaceships the reported aim.
(Well it would be funniest in the news if it were russians,... we're not certain of that)

Who cares if its illegal, maybe you are temporarily going on break and decide to redirect to google to skip the 404 page.

I would redirect it to fbi.gov or the whitehouse.gov and watch the attacks stop pretty quick. that way those of you out there that think its ok can see how illegal it really is. And we might even see a link to a real perp walk in C&P.

That would be great, but wouldn't that also be highly illegal for EN24 to do?

No he is right, if you do an NS attack, no matter how many ip addresses u got, they are still going to get hit since the IP address doesn't matter.
So, to redirect the attack, if it is NS based u just change it to the desired IP.
Gimme ur IP and i'll make u a "true believer" ^__^
We are working on the issue, Gigenet and 4web.ca take the credit for keepin us up and helping the eve community on this.

1 - The attack still hits you, technically not a re-direct. 2nd, the initial recipient of the attack will act like a funnel, as soon as all your resources are used up the funnel will clog and it wont be forwarded anymore. 3rd, it is VERY easy to trace where such an attack is coming from, so why haven't you fixed it / gotten their ISP to disconnect them yet?
Also if any 3rd party is harmed in any way because of your forwarding, you will be held liable. Try forwarding it to any major e-business and watch your services being disconnected within an hour. professional web development for the eve community |

The first "D" in "Distributed Denial of Service" should tip you off as to (a) the veracity of your claim and (b) the feasibility of your solution.

So? You're suggesting to cut off all incoming traffic from en24 in order to stop the ddos? Well that's a great idea!
Wait... community would be locked out, too... nvm

oh noes unstoppable ddos, quick shut down the internets!!!111 just another sad cry for attention. And yea I should've been more clear, 10+ years in IT in general, web development is just a part of it.
That said, I have been on both ends of ddos, and any professional web hosting company knows exactly what to do when it happens. Obviously people in here don't, so uhm, hosting it from your old desktop at home?
@OP: if you dont know how to stop the ddos, send me an evemail and I'll point you in the right direction.

There is no way to stop a DDOS attack, only to mitigate it. Although, as you profess to know the solution, please share it with us all as I'm sure there are many companies who would kill to get this kind of information (Sony, Barcleycard and PayPal to name a few)
As I mentioned mitigation earlier, I shall name a couple of ways.
1. QoS, commonly, DDOS relies on Broadcast ICMP. If you enable QoS rules for ICMP packets to lower their priority enough then your site will become at least usable for the duration of the attack (this generally requires an update to the hardware on the router/switch/firewall) 2. Disallow broadcast packets for the internal network to come from an external source. This again, requires reconfiguration of the hardware and probably something that you don't have access to. 3. If the DDOS is making a full site request, rate throttle each connection (for Apache this is mod_throttle)
Finally, which needs to be said, none of this will have any effect if the pipe itself is saturated. Regardless of QoS or throttling, if the amount of incoming requests, rejected or not, are more than the incoming connection can handle, the best thing you can do is hand it over to the authorities and let the ISP's themselves sort it out.
In most cases, the originating IP address will spoofed/masked making a trace difficult at best. Otherwise what you probably have is a zombie botnet. Which would be near impossible to shut down. Especially so in the worst case scenario (saturated bandwidth).
With every post you are demonstrating a lack of knowledge, yet stating you know everything. I find your claims difficult to ratify.
