Soundwaves absolutely exist in space. They just don't travel very far due to the lack of atmosphere. I love it when people say there is no oxygen in space....there is...just very little of it. NO BOOBIES LEFT BEHIND! |

Fortunately it's the same with OWN.
Also no one said there was no oxygen in space.

You come to me, eyes full of grief you ask of me to shed all my tears to let them return from kingdom of fears Why should I weep? or lose any sleep? they never brought me pleasure or glee so why would I help to set the jumpbridge free
You come to me,eyes full of grief all of your tears mean nothing to me so why will you not just leave me to be am I to blame? Well, I'm not ashamed! Oh how I smiled when I heard the tale Of Soundwave the sly, so clever and brave

well there certainly is oxygen near humanoid pilots at least, during - before, and short after an explosion. So you will hear any type of sound, that your own vessel makes if beeing hit or shaken.
of course, distant explosions need to be synthesized and feeded into the pilots neuronal connection, but again - the gunfire of your own armament is a soundwave that travels along your pylons and superstructure into the oxygen filled inside of your ships, thus can be heared by conventional means. Here, we actually use circuits that soften the noise to prevent our ears from taking damage. The pod can be sealed off, also from sound - if it is required to protect us.

sound does indeed exist in the vacuum of space. But instead of using a medium like (air)sound exists in particle waves in the electromagnetic spectrum ie radio waves.

Quoted for utter physics fail. Or... I have been trolled.
The only similarity between sound and EM radiation is the tendency to propagate in a wave-like fashion, thus giving them both a frequency, wavelength, and amplitude. Sound requires a physical medium through which to propagate. Radar/Radio/Light/etc do not.

Uh actually they do: they're their own medium.

^Agreed. I tried really hard to believe that no one is that dumb. But after looking at all the links and shiznit I was about to post, and recalling that most US citizens would fail their own citizenship test, I just shook my head and clicked on back.

soundwaves do exist in space...
"Sound or pressure waves can travel through space because space is not empty, but in many instances is filled with a warm, thin plasma of charged and neutral atoms. Interplanetary space is constantly swept by the solar 'wind', and pressure and density disturbances propagate outwards from their origin on the solar surface at the typical sound speed of the solar wind which is a few hundred kilometers per second given its temperature and density through out the solar system. These pressure disturbances are, in effect, sound waves."

Actually ... if you send light through a piece of glass and have that glass vibrate at a certain frequency .... this will transfer into the light and if you then have a light-decoder you can play the sound that is being vibrated into the glass from miles and miles away. And it works - I've done it myself :) It's quite interesting.
