English and Italian, and not that dirty-ass guido BS New Yorkers think is Italian when it's just some dirty, long-dead southern dialect.

That is a perfectly reasonable expectation.
I don't have anything against learning foreign languages. They're cool - I'd love to find time to learn a couple. Realistically, though, in the US you're only ever going to use Spanish enough to maintain fluency after you learn it. And I'm not too keen on learning Spanish to talk to people who ought to know English. If I moved to Spain, I'd absolutely learn it though. It ought to be a requirement of any immigrant.
I have zero tolerance for people who immigrate to a country without knowing the language, or at least quickly learning it once they get here.

I'm going to let you in on a well kept secret. Most of us do know at least two languages. We are aware that we are the world superpower and making everyone do business in our native language gives us the upper hand.
Now you should understand.

Good responses, by the way... amazing that I never have given much thought to how big the US really is, and the other countries I have spent any large amount of time in (India and Canada) are also quite large.

As an American I think it is a great idea to teach children either Spanish or Chinese.
As for some Europeans who are quick to complain, I don't think they realize that 95% of Americans can get by in life quite well by speaking English only. To our north, the Canadians for the most part speak a language mutually intelligible ;) And to our south, Mexicans who are in the business world speak English passably.
So that's why.

Why would I waste time learning a second language when the whole world already speaks english.

living in a periphery country like mine, learning a second language is pretty much mandatory.

I find people from the far east to know a lot of languages. specifically Malaysia and Indonesia. It's not uncommon for say a Malaysian person to know Malaysian (ofc), Chinese both Mandarin and Cantonese maybe Hakka as well and finally English.

This confused me also when I was in America, or even when I've spoken to people online or via facebook. They were always surprised to learn that I spoke multiple languages.
I'm Scottish, my main language is English (or Glaswegian, depending on who I'm talking to ) but I can also speak Swedish, Norwegian, broken Gaelic and a little Urdu. And the question I got asked when people were surprised about that was, "Why would you need to learn those? Everyone knows English!" Actually, everyone doesn't, but I didn't learn them from school - but from talking with people online, visiting other places, staying for a while and learning the language.
I would also like to add that it isn't just folks in the US who have those view, many here in Britain do also. __ Gothie <3 |

Defiantly a troll attempt, or just plain biased ignorance.
I would bet most Americans in the southern half of the US (bordering Mexico) can speak a smattering of Spanish, (enough to be understood by a Spanish speaker). Its not that they have an aversion to it and other languages. Its just that there is no real reason to learn from a practical stand point. It has nothing to do with bias, prejudice, superiority or arrogance. The US is bordered by a predominately English speaking country to the north, and an almost 100% Spanish speaking country to the south...that's it.
Its not Americas fault there's 3000(+) miles of ocean separating it from French, Italian, Arabic, Korean, Hindi, and so on. Most people who do travel over-seas for business do learn, (or try to learn), the native language of the people they are doing business with.
I think German, French, and Japanese is still taught in most US public schools. And Im 100% certain Spanish is taught in every public school. Why Spanish over all others? You dont need to be a genius to figure that one out.
I mean did I really have to explain all that? Was it that hard to figure out? What you should do it put your preconceptions for Americans aside for a few moments, and use that that brain and think for a second.
Whats more interesting in my opinion, but easily answerable, is; why is English so prevalent?

We here in the US do not have major need to learn another language, also when you think about people not intending to travel outside the US you figure it could take years of summer vacations just to see all the major attractions here let alone just see the country itself. A major thing here in the US is I can cross distances greater than most people do in Europe and still be in the same country. a 6hr plane ride leaves me in California, still speaking English.
in short its not that we are lazy(ok some americans are lazy) but a big part is that there is not an urgent need to. in mainland Europe I can see a use to knowing your own language, English and one other because your chances of encountering other languages is much higher. down here in Suburban South Jersey, chances are slim of me needing another language ever.
Though if I went back to college for some courses id honestly consider Spanish or whatever is the most current popular Chinese as a side course to take.

Edited by: Astenion on 15/05/2011 23:21:43 English is a language that adapts and constantly evolves whereas most other languages are stagnant, especially Latin-based languages. They're like museums that talk, only good for when you're in the area because they are destined to become obsolete purely by design. That's right, get over it. Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian, Portugese, etc...in a few centuries no one will give a rat's ass about your language anymore because just like everything else in Latin cultures, they are averse to change.
I still love speaking Italian, though...much more so than my native English tongue.
Also, many English speakers f*cking suck at pronouncing other languages...and English is easy. Can't speak English? You're either ret@rded, lazy, or a tool. There's no other excuse, especially these days. You don't need to learn it in school, just go online or watch a movie without your horrible overdubs.

Like how France has a whole government department devoted to preservation of French Language, to the point they invented a new word for Email a few years ago.

The French are very adamant about remaining autonomous in almost every facet. They even have a word for "computer".
It's not because they want to keep their language evolving; it's because they hate everyone else.
However, almost every culture has its own language police except for English. We don't have a central English Academy like most other nations do, which is why English rules.

No. There are the Oxford, Cambridge, and Merriam-Webster dictionaries but they are not governed by law; I wasn't kidding when I called it the language police...that's what it really is. There is a government office dedicated to French or German or Italian or Spanish languages.
They tried to do it in England once but the beauty of English is that you're freer to experiment than in other languages, so it got squashed. Imo, that is why it's the international language.

Absolutely, that is the number one reason.
I'd say an easy second reason is American movies and music. Followed by English music and movies.

I'd say entertainment and technology has had way more influence than the British Empire. They planted the seed in many countries but if you travel to anywhere in the world, they're going to know English due to music, film, and television as well as school...not because their great-grandparents learned it from the English.

I dont know, I have to disagree. A good example is a lot of the post colonial countries in Africa. English is almost always a second language in their former holdings. Same holds true for France's and the Dutch former holdings.
Just because they gained their independence didnt mean they stopped trading with the former colonial powers. And so they continued to teach that language.
I think movies and music has the biggest influence now, but no form colony ever unlearned that foreign powers language, at lest not completely.

Turkey for centuries has been a cross roads between the white christian western Europe and the Islamic middle east. It is open to western culture yet recently burka's have become more popular with women as well as contemporary decorative Islamic cloths.
Cultural progress in the west is not a straight linear line going upwards. Where often we make progress we also go backwards. The silver screen era of American cinema had far more innovation in story line narratives that has been lost since the 70's. When I worked in IT, I worked with this fellow who had moved here from India. He used to say that the only thing good that the British ever did for India was to teach them all the value of speaking English, so they can now take away so many high-paying jobs from Americans. __________________________________________________ Name a shrub after me; something prickly and hard to eradicate. |
