I have just been offered a storyline mission that requires combat against an empire faction. This frustrates me because I have been working hard over several months to improve all my empire faction standings - I learned the hard way to decline missions against empire factions because of the associated extra hit to my standings.
What happens if I decline the storyline mission? Will I be offered an alternative against a pirate faction? Or will I have to fforfeit the storyline and do yet another 16 ordinary missions to get to the next storyline - which hopefuully will be against a pirate faction next time? Get over it! Learn and move on. |

No standing loss at all (either corp. of faction) but you will have to make 16 other missions to get another storyline.

The same thing as if you decline any mission, except that storyline agents only offer you new missions when they choose to, rather than when you ask them.
So yes, your storyline offer is forfeit and you have to wait for the next one and hope it suits you better. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Thanks guys, thought that might be the case. Kinda sucks though, you work through 16 missions to earn the storyline, then it screws you over!

I understand completely. I've started doing the same of late - just declining ANY mission vs. another faction in an effort to preserve standings with the other races.
And, no, an alternative storyline won't be offered. Do 16 more and hope for a pirate run.

I decided 'what the hell' and ran the mission anyway... and got an unexpected result.
The mission was 'Missing Persons Report' (level 4) and was for a Federation Navy Storyline agent, against the Caldari Navy - several waves of Caldari Navy ships, mostly 3-4 BS and 3-4 Cruisers, with Japanese derived names (Shinto etc). Killing these ships yielded wrecks with Caldari Navy ID tags, mostly Admiral and Commander, which sold for over 30 million isk on the Dixie market. This mission is not currently listed in Evelopedia.
My standings for Caldari Navy were left intact during and after the mission. When I cashed in the mission, my standings for empire factions changed just as you would expect for a normal NPC storyline mission - just the normal modest hit to my Caldari and Amarr standings, and a boost to Gallante and Minmatar.
Conclusion: you can treat 'Missing Persons Report' like a NPC mission, even though it is cited as being against the Caldari state.
