Esteemed capsuleers,
CCP will broadcast a Live Dev Blog on Thursday, May 26, at 22:00 UTC, focused on Customer Support and Security. For those who haven't heard, Live Dev Blogs are audio broadcasts from CCP heard in-game through the Vivox-provided EVE Voice service ù and for the first time, you'll also be able to listen in to the Live Dev Blog through the EVE Voice beta for EVE Gate. More details on how to listen in will be made available prior to the broadcast. Live Dev Blogs provide an opportunity for you to get to know us and our work a bit better and are another window into how things work at CCP, and we hope you'll be pleased with our next show.
Your host for the event will be the silver-tongued CCP Soundwave, and to discuss the topics of Customer Support and Security we will have two veteran Senior Game Masters, GM Nova and GM Nythanos along with our Senior Security Administrator, CCP Sreegs. To that end, we are looking for questions from you û the EVE player community û which Nova, Nythanos, and Sreegs will answer during the Live Dev Blog. Those questions should focus on Customer Support and Security.
Please submit your questions on these topics for the devs in this thread. YouÆll have until 05:00 UTC on Thursday, May 19th to get your questions in before we lock this submission thread. CCP will select a number of these questions to be answered by Nova, Nythanos, and Sreegs.
Players interested in listening in on May 26 should join the ôLive Dev Blogö channel in-game, right-click on the channel tab, and select ôJoin Audioö. Further details about how to listen in to the Live Dev Blog on Customer Support and Security using EVE Gate will also be announced prior to the broadcast.
WeÆre looking forward to your questions for the CCP devs, and we'll see you on the 26th!

What is CCPs stance on ships that are impossible to scan down using scan probes?
What about ships that are simply resistant to being scanned down?
And is it considered to be an exploit?
If it is disliked by CCP what are the plans to change it?
Thanks for your time.

what happens when you get a petition from someone saying his account has been hacked? what would be the indications that an accounted actually has been hacked and that its not a scam?

1)In regards to botting has CCP considered using a "status check" system in game to possible curb this plague? For example: after the same identifiable pattern of actions are repeated X number of times have a captcha pop up in game.
2)On the other side of the fence: If a user is banned what recourse do users have to contest the reasonings for the ban, or in the very least, get information on the reason for the ban. I'd want to know why I was banned as so not to do it again.

How does support deal with petitions for bots? There seems to be a sentiment to "kill them ourselves, CCP ignores the petitions anyway" from people I've flown with. Do you respond to the petitions letting the petitioner know you got the botter or just take care of it when there is a confirmed botter?
This signature is useless, but it is red.

Security Keys seem to be a simple and easy tool to integrate as many games have proven. Given as stated above they were handed out at Fanfest what is the timetable to provide these to the general population. With billions of isk on the line just telling me to change my password often isnt enough security.

After you have banned a person for macroing or botting what measures do they have in their disposal to try and dispute your claims that they were doing something wrong? I'm looking for something more specific than the generic reply of "just petition it". What I want to know specifically is: Are there realisticly any things that a player who is innocent can do in order to prove his innocence after you have deemed him a botter/macroer and how careful are you in making sure that legitimate players don't get banned by possible false positives?

Why has CCP decided during a huge conflict in the North and elsewhere that we should change jump bridge mechanics. Would it not have been wiser to implement this at a later time when things in 0.0 were more stable?

A player has returned after 2 years absence, and started reactivating accounts. On one account, a special is run to get the account back within 5 days. There is a petition pending for 3 days waiting for that account information for the rightful(and proven) user. What further steps need to be taken by that player?

Edited by: Vincent Athena on 17/05/2011 18:36:32 Given the data you have collected on bots: What is your estimate of the fraction of the eve economy that was due to bots at the time before you started banning (say if we took a snapshot a few weeks before fanfest)? Specifically, what percent of all bounty isk was produced by bots, what percent of ice was mined by bots, and what percent of minerals (mining and loot reprocessing) came from bots?
Also, in general, how goes the anti-bot war?
There have been many questions raised about assistive devices and software being used with eve, the issue being to not be tagged as a bot. If a user gets such a device or piece of software, reads the EULA, and cannot figure out if the device or software would be a EULA violation, what do they do next?

Other MMOs have implemented physical authenticator USB drives to be sure the intended user is logging into the proper account.
Does CCP have any plans to do this? If so, how would CCP handle the issue of people with multiple accounts? For example, I would not like to have to purchase a USB hub just to plug in 5 authenticators for my accounts.

Hi, I would like to know how many people are actually employed in customer service and what is the system employed to deal with petitions? I have made petitions which have been answered within minutes, and others which have never been answered at all, which I find insulting. As paying customers we naturally expect good service and to simply not receive a reply to a petition is frankly apalling. So how do you prioritise petitions and why is it some have gone unanswered? If this happened with a large company it would not be acceptable and trying to tie anyone down for specific issues can be a hideous experience which needs rectifying immediately. Thank you in advance for information on this. Never rub another man's rhubarb.

Will you be posting stats on bans?
Bots are going up in smoke left and right-but the majority of botters I know getting banned are hisec. The percentages admittedly are not from a peer researched and documented study admittedly, but the overwhelming majority of 0.0 macro's are still chugging away. Will we be looking forward to seeing macro ratters getting popped soon?
Sreegs: any grandstanding forthcoming from your camp? You going to at least take a bow
Customer support guys-could you just highlight petition percentages, by group/type?
This is sort of security related: Is it true that CCP headquarters-like 95% of Iceland-is beneath a solid sheet of ice 3M thick for 320 days/Year? And also is it true that CCP gets 1st Tier GM's by chipping out Neanderthals out of the glacial mass, reviving them and teaching them to paste "I'm sorry but our logs don't show any lag or malfunction on the server..." If any of the above is true-do they pose a security hazard in the CCP plant? Arent zombie Neanderthals known for violent outbreaks?
Thanks in advance. By the way... thanks whoever is responsible for getting the bots nixed

When banning for botting, do you always ban all known accounts and alt accounts?

1) Botting. Botting is getting alot of attention, from both the players and CCP. Have you considered making it legal to use botting for mining, as long as you control the process - writing the checks into the client, providing the Bot and being proactive. It is a valid possibility (though as popular as legalising pot was throughout the last 30 years)
2) If legalizing botting is right out of the question - why don't you get the players to help. Instigate the bounty hunter profession properly rather than the mess it currently is
3) CS. I have worked in a CS role before and ppl can be a pure pain in the buttocks. On the occasion that I have had to petition, the service (response etc) was not swift and really did look like it had a cut/paste feel about it. Saying that, it was professional and courteous - the way a CSR should be. How are you going to improve your service as the player base increases?
4) Security in general. It is good to see the security being implemented and I welcome our new .... overlord HOWEVER - security ALWAYS adds a layer of complexity that ALWAYS slows a process down. I don't believe the key solution you introduced at Fanfest is either cost effective or simple (to own or to implement). If you are going ahead with the key, could you talk us through the security process of the login procedure?
Thx K

Please describe how the customer service team utilzes the listening process (below), and explain how good listerners (you) can overcome barrriers at each stage of the process.
The listening process involves five activities: 1) receiving (physically reading the message), 2) decoding (assingning meaning to what you read), 3) remembering (storing the message for future reference), 4) evaluating (thinking about the message), and 5) responding (reacting to the message, taking action, or giving feedback).
What are the steps your team takes to improve on these barriers as you come across them daily?

While I personally believe the Key Fob idea is just jumping on the band wagon, I am sure that the security team has gone through many solutions before coming up with this idea. My question however is won't the key fob be easy to remove by contacting ccp like many scammers have done with wow or even worse phishing for the serial key on the back of the fob rendering it useless for the purpose it was created.

About botting: * What are the numbers? How many bots were (perma)banned. * Impact of the bot on the economy
Hacked accounts: this seemed to be much worse a couple of months ago. Is the hacking still going strong?
Customer support: I see a lot of people whining on the forums about slow petitions. I have never had this problem, all my petitions were handled in a fair way. As we can rate the petitions; give us some average numbers per petition categorie. For example : mission petitions: avg 8.0, billing petitins: 7.4, ...
Keep up the good work, I like these liveblogs. |

What is being done to combat market bots sitting in Jita?
Anyone who has played Eve knows there is a constant .01 isk war, but there is a difference between a person doing it and a robot. This difference is particularly pronounced if someone is maintaining 80 some buy/sell orders, and who seem to notice immediately that certain products have changed, or know exactly how long till they can readjust this number. This should be easily detectable by comparing number of market transactions and IP addresses they come from to find the biggest traders, and then using that as the focus for bot inspections. -- Kismeteer, carebear extraordinaire

1) Which is negatively affecting the game more? Hisec (mining) or Nullsec (ratting) bots? 2) What are some things to look for when spotting a bot? If we find one, how do we report it? 3) Do you think that changing ice mining mechanics to decrease ice block size and increase output/cycle and the ozone and heavy water drop/block would help remove some hisec bots? [If so, please tell the game devs!] 4) With the world economy still not fully recovered from the recession, does CCP plan to charge money for the hardware auths?
