So I realize that once you get to mining barges and exhumers this becomes less important but I want to argue that the Vexor is a better miner than the osprey.
The fitting difference for the two are 3 turrets on the Osprey vs 4 on the Vexor
Drone bandwidth for an osprey is 20 vs 75 for the Vexor
At cruiser 5 Osprey has a 100% bonus to mining laser yield compared to a 50% bonus to mining drone yield for the Vexor.
Using tech 2 equipment you have cycle times of 60 sec for lasers and drones. Laser yield is 60m3, drone yield is 25m3. Drones need time to return to the ship even if your sitting on the rock, this adds a minimum of about 5 seconds for T2 and 10 for Harvester. (this is an approximation but is also based on personal experience)
Osprey 3 Turrets x 60m3 = 180m3 x 150% (Cruiser5, Mining5, Astrogeology5) = 450m3 x 60 for 27000m3/hour + 4 T2drones x 25m3 = 100m3 x 125% (Drone interfacing5, Mining Drone5) = 225m3 x 55(travel time) for 12375m3/hour
Total 39375 m3 / hour Vexor 4 turrets x 60m3 = 240m3 x 50% (Mining5, Astrogeology5) = 360m3 x 60 for 21600m3/hour + 5 Harvester drones x 30m3 = 150m3 x 175% (Cruiser5, Drone interfacing5, Mining Drone5) = 412.5m3 x 50(travel time) for 20625m3 per hour
Total 42225m3 / hour
In addition to the raw numbers there's the fact that a Vexor can withdraw his mining drones and send out a flight of combat drones if it needs to.
I'm bringing this up because I assume I forgot to take something into account and would like to be corrected
Or I got it right and need validation
anyway thanks
Jenny

I used an arby on this char til I got my lil retriever, while I was training to that, I was less concerned about maximising ore/hour, especially as, a new char doesnt have the associated skills to max out efficiency whilst in a cruiser, Cruiser V? Unlikely if you are specialising as a miner, Drone skills to V? also unlikely at that point.
Its a good theoretical exercise, but in practise, having all skills required to V means you are most likely already in a barge, or mining from a Rokh etc

Unless the ship supports multiple flights of drones (like a Hulk does), the primary purpose of drones is defense, and the secondary purpose is for mining drones.
The Rokh also mines more than an Osprey btw.

I only used Harvester drones because the Vexor is able to use them. The price of a Harvester Drone is extremely prohibitive to almost any miner. They also fly significantly slower than a T2 mining drone. That being said if you replace them in the formula with T2 Drones the Vexor still comes out ahead by 1718.75m3.

I agree wholeheartedly so the Osprey in my original calculations actually mines even less because its entire 20m3 drone bay has combat scout drones in it. Whereas the Vexor can use its 75m3 drone bay to hold 5 mining drones and 2 flights of combat scouts.

I dont doubt that at all but I would say that a Gallente Dominix could do just as well and be more versatile while at it.
How does a figure of 40,000m3/hour compare to mining barges and exhumers?

A mining cruiser is a low-skills, low-budget, low-yield mining platform. As such, harvester drones are out because of price and maxed drone skills are out because nobody with those high level of skills would still be mining in a mining cruiser (when you could have easily used those same SP to get at least into a Retreiver). In fact, you should probably construct a SP budget that's slightly below the bare minimum to mine in a Retreiver. I would even go so far as to claim that you probably shouldn't even be looking at any other T2 gear except T2 miners, and most relevant skills to L4 only if low rank, otherwise L3, and no L5s whatsoever unless absolutely necessary as prerequisites for something.
P.S. Solo all L5 skills, single MLU-II but no implants/gangboost Covetor without mining drones 74k/h, with drones 92k/hour, with implants 100k/hour, with max orca leadership boost 145k/hour, Hulk with 2xMLU-II and all implants and bonuses and Orca maxed commander 177k/hour. Give or take. _

Edited by: Jagga Spikes on 18/05/2011 20:43:20 vexor may be better than osprey, but if i were into mining, i would skip cruisers altogether and and go for barge. one can get enough ISK for retriever in frigate.
cruiser 5 + mining = sad face :(
edit: btw, harvesters are slow, so their mining yield is going to be affected unless you hug the rock. ________________________________ : Forum Bore 'Em : Foamy The Squirrel - [jedi handwave] "There is no spoon." |

An Osprey can fit two Mining Laser Upgrade II upgrades whereas a Vexor can only fit one (due to the high CPU needs of having 4 mining lasers).
This raises the osprey mining laser ii yield to 222.7 / minute (obviously you'd have to do ******ed amounts of cargo juggling with staggered lasers). 222.7 * 3 * 60 = 40,086 + drone yield
A single mining laser upgrade ii helps a vexor much less because it doesn't multiply with the vexor's mining bonus. 102.18 * 4 * 60 = 24,523.2 + drone yield
You can then add in a mining implant which, again, boosts the osprey more. Osprey 42,102 + drones with 5% implant Vexor 25,752 + drones with 5% implant
On the other hand the Vexor can then add: Drone Mining Augmentor II Drone Mining Augmentor II Drone Mining Augmentor I +3% CPU implant Drone yield = 35,420 (via EFT)
Whereas the Osprey only gets to fit one for 15,125.
(Not really sure about the 55/60 effectiveness for mining drones, seems high on a small rock belt to me.
So the Vexor sort of wins, although the osprey can still add on two cargohold optimizations ii which should make it substantially less painful to actually use.
In real life imho you'd be ******ed to train up mining drone ii whilst still in a cruiser. And I say this from a position of experience... as I did so. :)

Thanks for all the constructive replies everyone.
I'll admit that it is a bit of a moot point because mining barges and Exhumers are available.
I was only thinking that it would be useful from the position of someone who does not mine a lot and is primarily focused on fighting. Also if I were a pirate and d-scanned a belt seeing a Vexor or two I would be less inclined to charge in than if I saw an Osprey.
Anyway cheers everyone and thanks

Holy **** ! Two *entry level* mining ships with *prefect* skills and fittings don't mine *exactly* the same amount because they aren't carbon copies of each other! Stop the f_ck_ng presses.
tl,dr; Thread is bad and you should feel bad.

Edited by: Maelle LuzArdiden on 26/05/2011 09:55:33 Nice one OP
I trained some basic mining skills as a noob, and combined with good drone skills Vexor makes a nice miner. Now of course it's not an exhumer or whateverqual nberextractor roidpwnstrippercarrier, but really wth wants to spend precious training time on such things anyway. I still like to participate and contribute to corp mining ops, maybe even build some stuffs one day, so I use this:
[Vexor, Vexor - casual miner]
Cu Vapor Particle Bore Stream I Cu Vapor Particle Bore Stream I Cu Vapor Particle Bore Stream I Cu Vapor Particle Bore Stream I Core Probe Launcher I, Sisters Core Scanner Probe /OFFLINE
'Dactyl' Type-E Asteroid Analyzer /OFFLINE Drone Navigation Computer I Y-S8 Hydrocarbon I Afterburners /OFFLINE
Mining Laser Upgrade I Mining Laser Upgrade I Co-Processor II Co-Processor II
Medium Drone Mining Augmentor I Medium Cargohold Optimization I Medium Cargohold Optimization I
Mining Drone I x5 Vespa EC-600 x5 Warrior II x5
Cheap as chips, works with mining skills at III, benefits from the useful skills like Drone Interfacing V, Drone Navigation IV and Cruiser V, mines, is a Vex, so- win. You can hang with the brosefs and be like a cool pro mining dude in your own mini hulk aight
