I used to play loooong ago, in 2004-2005, and back then I created my character with just his name Tenophas, without a surname. Now, I just came back, and for better "immersion" in the game I would like to add a surname. I know very well that it's not possible to "change" one character's name, but I don't want to "change" it, just to "complete" it.
Does anyone know if it is possible in some way to do it?
Thanks a lot!
P.S. It's nice to be back!!!!!!! See you in space........

Create a Petition. Ask. Maybe the GM who reads it got laid this year and is in a good mood.

Edited by: Serpents smile on 19/05/2011 08:34:45 A name alteration, whether it's a removal of some part an addition of some part or a complete change remains for the DB still a change.
Your only route to travel is creating a new character with the desired name, if it isn't taken already.
The only thing they have granted at times is a change in upper/ lowercast, like I could petition to change the first letter of my last name into a 'S', instead of the 's', which I won't .

They will not let you do that.
But, consider this. All players in EvE now must have 2 word names (and can have 3). Having a 1 word name is a thing of pride. :) _______________________ The best thing in EvE is Barrage M. |

I'd like this as well.
What I actually suggested was that you should be able to have a title as well as a last (or middle) name displayed in your info. The title could be your rank (Captain), middle name could be a nickname (maybe chosen by friends or corpies that could be fun), last name would be a House or Tribe, possibly with a pre-selected in EVE storyline list (House of Tash-Murkon, Tribe of Blaa'ugh, etc.).
The easiest way to add a last/ full name might be to put one in your info page, along with a bit of a backstory for your character.

DB change huh? Well, what I don't quite understand...is it a software / API limitation? I mean...it's pretty common in other games to have a name change feature, even if you have to petition to get it. I don't particularly see why it is such an issue here. I've also tried about a year ago to get my name changed, way before the character creator was added to the game. And now with the surname requirement for new characters, I would think that this should be relatively easy for them to accomplish. I am going to try again, myself, and see where it takes me.

You can't get a name change because that is the ONLY thing that identifies your character in eve. Imagine if nothing you did in your past could EVER be tied to you.
There'd have to be a system of having records of name changes on file publicly available for all eve pilots to see. Anything else would break all accountability in eve.

Your logic is flawed. Your achievements in game do not necessarily have to be tied to your character name. I hate to use other games as examples, but it is possible to update your name in a database without losing the data tied to that specific character. Also, it is just as easy to have your name changed automatically on other peoples' contact lists. Shouldn't be too much work on CCP's part based on past experiences with there "other games".
Also, CCP has made it even easier, as the surname is now a completely SEPARATE entity from your first name. All the original poster and myself would really like would be to add a surname. We are not asking for a complete and total name change. Since it should be possible now to do so with ease, I do not see why CCP can't just bite the bullet and get it done.
The only thing stopping them would be bad programming or database structure. Though I would like to believe CCP to be better than this, I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually the case. I would just like a straight up answer like, "Sorry, our database can't handle a name change. It would screw up x and y because of reason z" This would be much better than the quick and resounding "No" that we seem to get from the peanut gallery.

My petiton was denied. It's not possible to "just add" a surname as it would be considered a "change". And it is not allowed.
Thanks to all for your kind replies anyway.

Exactly. I have played a lot of other mmos since 11 years, and it was always possible to change your name, usually as a service, against about 15-20 Ç, even in games older than EVE. The simple fact that a GM CAN do it proves that it's possible. And as someone else has already written, the whole concept of consequences is a joke, as people regulary buy and sell accounts...

Characters in EVE have a unique character ID number which identifies them in the database, that is to say, it's not a limitation of the system which prevents name changes, but rather that's just how the rules are, as being able to change your name would, for example, allow you to disappear after pulling off a large corp theft, etc. - your name is persistent because of how much deeper the consequences of your actions in EVE can be. --- ISD IonCharge Lt. You can still add a last name on your bio, what it means, what tribe you are from, etc.
