What would be great is if CCP built an FTL Transmitter and started using it with Satelites for Worldwide communications. CCP already has a theory planned out for how they work in EVE, so could it be applied to real-life? It would revolutionize the way we communicate, and it might even help reduce lag for people further away from CCP's headquarters. All they have to do is modify a Laser-Based Data Transmitter to emit photons at Faster-than-light speeds using the same technology for FTL Transmitters in EVE. We have the technology and knowledge to do it, but the human race is just too lazy to get off its lazy ass and do something. ________________________________________________

.. and humans still can't decode quantum dream waves hahahaha Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. ~Saint |

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 19/05/2011 19:44:26 Technically we already developed the basis for FTL communications, it's called quantum entanglement. Entangled particles "communicate" their states (and changes in state) instantaneously across vast distances, and we can make those entangled particles, although that's both tricky and costly. Manipulating them is a bit tricky though, so no working communications technology exists for them, but still.
BTW last time I checked EVE's FTL communications grid was also based on quantum entanglement, not faster than light lasers. EVE Online Faster than Light Communication

The problem is that the physics EVE uses for FTL transmission is incompatible with the standard model of Star Trek physics. Quantum interference means neither set of physical laws will function until some way is found to reconcile them.

So the scientists in EVE have understood and harnessed nonlocality, and all they did with it was make a communication system?
That's kind of a waste.

This is one of my inexplicable nerd pet-peeves. faster than light laser is a contradiction, LASER actually stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. That means you'll have light going faster than light.
Hence why I RAAAAAAGE at Tachyon Beam Lasers.
Tachyon being faster than light particles.
Ok I'm done now. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Nerd RAAAAAAAGE HHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
But, yes...it would be a Tachyon "cannon" - not a Tachyon Laser.

We already have FTL transmitters, you can get them from Verizon Wireless. Now we need FTW transmitters. uʍop ǝpısdn ǝɹnʇɐuƃıs ʎɯ ƃuıpɐǝɹ ǝɹɐ noʎ |

The test-message of the first FTL Transmitter was the cause of the Caldari-Gallente War and also the cause of the Jovian Downfall

Clones and jump clones also rely on the FTL transmission system. Instantaneous travel galaxy-wide isn't so bad.

Well, c is the speed of light in vacuum, but in EVE physics, space is full of some sort of viscous oil with an unknown refractive index. So you can certainly have particle beams traveling 'faster' than light.
"Tachyon lasers" are still silly, though. Maybe it's a brand name?

Definition of Laser:
Light Amplified by the Simulated Emission of Radiation
And Tachyons are technically a form of radioactive sub-atmoic particles. And they travel so fast (faster than Photons, aka Light), that they can even warp through time and space. If you slowed them down, you might get a temporally stable yet still Faster-than-Light transmission.
You do not gain Mass by aproaching the speed of Light, and the same goes for volume. There is no such thing as Infinite Volume, and you can only get Infinite Mass via a Singularity. Volume and Mass are not the same thing, so gaining infinite mass does not mean you will take up every point in the universe at the same time. Also, there is no such thing as Infinite Velocity. The Speed of Light is just an extremely high velocity, which means we can still travel at the speed of light if not faster if we can carry our atoms on beams of Photons or Tachyons. |
