When you warp to stars, there is a big difference in the quality compared to planets, ships, stations, and other objects. From afar the stars look fine, it's only up close do they look out of step with the rest.
I know they are massive, so texturing one might take alot of resources, but it would look very nice indeed.

For me stars are perhaps the most immersion breaking graphical element. ie at 0.4 AU one would expect a star to be almost blindingly bright and ones hull to be almost glowing with reflected light. And at 60AU for a star to be a dim ember in the distance with your ship illuminated mainly by its running lights and weapons fire.
Yes I agree I would love a well textured sun in each system but second to what I detailed above.
So tldr +1 from me

It can just be an animated sprite with a bright glow, a transparency map, and a few particle effects around it. Nothing too special. You could also add Lensflare effects. ________________________________________________

Edited by: Everinsearch on 21/05/2011 08:57:57 I would like to add that the Brightness of the star seems like it doesn't change, corresponding to the table below, while you warp around the system.
AppMag | celestial objects
û29.30Sun as seen from Mercury at perihelion û27.40Sun as seen from Venus at perihelion û26.74Sun[5] (398,359 times brighter than mean full moon) û25.60Sun as seen from Mars at aphelion û23.00Sun as seen from Jupiter at aphelion û21.70Sun as seen from Saturn at aphelion û20.20Sun as seen from Uranus at aphelion û19.30Sun as seen from Neptune û18.20Sun as seen from Pluto at aphelion û16.70Sun as seen from Eris at aphelion
Matching the distances we know these objects are from one another, (at aphelion), we can calculate how bright the star should appear at all points in the system.

technically you would never see the texture of a star, the light would be quite bright and all you would see is a blinding light as you got closer. So unless you had tinted glass to control exposure you would not see much texture.
Having said that though there is already sun textures available from a free program called "Celestia". Google it, it's very a detail solar simulator and it's supported by a community of users.
The textures from celestia could be reused.

Firmly agree about the immersion-breaking of stars in EVE. Whilst the new backgrounds may alleviate some of this, it would be good to experience a deeper sense of reality; if you look at the pictures from the Mars rover, Sol looks like little more than a slightly brighter glimmer, like a distant moon.
When ya think about it, darkening down the systems would give EVE a much more moody and serious feel, perhaps even making a visit to a station/POS/gate feel that much more interesting and warming/inviting.
I dunno, i think it'd be cool. --
