Anyone else seen these? Totally outrageous and absolutely stellar. I want. Yes, I know I can build one 10x more powerful for a smidgen of the price, but then it wouldn't be a Murderbox now would it? If I had that kind of cash to throw around, I'd snatch one up in a heartbeat....works of art if you ask me. ~Gnosis~ |

Basically custom high-end PCs, their starting price is around $6000, topping out at $20,000 or so. In other words, nowhere near worth the money. Hardcore Computer's submersion computing solutions are actually cheaper than those "murderbox" PCs.

Ahh. I could never spend that kind of money on a computer the way the tech industry advances. In just a year or two you'll be able to throw together a better system for under 2k.

I suppose an ultimate workstation PC would be based on a Supermicro X8OBN-F motherboard that can take 8 x Xeon 8 core 2.4ghz X7560 CPU's. With all the latest peripherals you can shovel into it the PC would cost around $30,000.
But this would only be useful for stuff like 3D Studio MAX doing CGI. And Nvidia's Tesla system of using many GPU's for brute force processing power is very popular for CGI. This technology was used to make the special effects for the film 'Avatar'.
Anyway being a PC geek at the moment is a lot easier on the wallet for running the latest games than it was years ago. I still use a 4 year old Nvidia 8800 GTS 512MB that lets me run Battlefield Bad Company 2 at 1920x1200 in good detail. Ordered one the other day, was 16,000. They let you pay it off like a car though, so I'm good.

Basically they build the type of pc's featured on million dollar pc. The braiding can be bought from Niles at MDPC in Germany and they also have some superb quality screws. Wouldn't be too hard to put together yourself with a bit of practice at braiding for alot less. I'm doing something similar atm and my build cost is currently at ú4000. Also bought braiding and aforementioned screws from MDPC.
I think their is also a guy in the US that braids for you if you really wanted and it is absolutely top quality at Psychosleeve if I remember correctly. Again uses MDPC braid. But hell it's pretty much all the same people anyway.

For half of that kind of money I'd just buy a damn aquarium, fill it with mineral oil and have a few fluid pumps run liquid from it to a freezer outside the room and back... _

Isn't the fun in the build? As opposed to the bragging rights of owning something?
I'd be hard pressed to feel proud pointing out a tweaked out computer to my friends, knowing I had to pay a design firm to design the look of the tweaking... and tweak it for me.

LOL who in their right mind would buy a liquid cooled blade server? For that money you could buy 2-3 more regular ones. On top of anyone with a serious data center is figuring out the best "eco-placement" for the building it's self and using natural cooling methodology to save money.
On top of that liquid cooling is prone to breakage eventually and in a rack configuration you could screw over a lot of hardware.

On the other hand, give me a damned good reason I shouldn't look at sinking my sighning bonus onto a Mac Pro with all the shiny bits on while I still have the 25% student discount?... It's half and half.
Unless your friends were witness to your toils, then no, they would not have the same perspective you would. They might ask whether it runs Crysis on Max @ 1080p, but that's about all.
But, unveiling a $50k Cray workstation as your 'toy' at a LAN party would be akin to landing a Mig-27 at a radio controlled aircraft free-day.
One just has more impact than the other...

Absolutely correct!
As the chances of low esteem in men being attributed to TMI issues leading to hobbies like computers - it's fairly natural for people to want to rub antiseptic on the acne-ridden faces by having a 'pimped out' ·ber-computer costing $50k and turning up at a LAN party.
It's the nerd version of having bling around your neck, like a dog collar.
Didn't you just surpass the highest number of posts ever on the eve-online forums Akita?
