I know this might seem like a silly question...but what is the most fun that you can have in this game? is it mission? Crafting? PVP?
What is 'fun' in Eve online?

Edited by: Loraine Gess on 21/05/2011 21:38:06 A lot of people find different things fun. Simply accumulating isk is what plenty of people find the most fun (although it varies in how they do it). PVP also has a very large fanbase, with corporations such as Red vs. Blue set up just for it. Griefing is a personal past time of mine, although I prefer terms such as "Corporate Infiltration", "Ninja Salvaging", "War deccing", and "Can Flipping". Griefing is just such an... ugly term for it.
At the end of the day it comes down to what YOU want to do. Keep in mind that you might need a steady supply of isk to do that activity. Which means you might have to grind some unfun things to do the things that you want, and are fun.

Thanks for the reply! I've heard about the 'griefing' in the game but I thought i might give it a try. Is there anything I ought to now before I start? Will I be blown up after I leave the space station? o_O Are there any maps or places where getting blown up on sight doesn't happen all the time?

I'm here because I expect to have fun in fleet battles. The game has so much depth with all the different sizes and functions of ships, that you can build whatever ship you like or focus on any area you like. Then when you understand your place, you try to apply your advantages to your side's fleet while minimizing your disadvantages.
If you want 'fun' I guess I'd suggest small group piracy. Get a buddy to tackle your prey in something small and fast so your dedicated dps ship can blast them. Bring a third person with lots of EWAR, group buffs, or some other trump card to win vs other small groups.

...an can I learn how to plow other people up and take their stuff?
Join the "Nina Dojo" chat in game, they are the *ahem* 'foremost' experts on ninja salvaging and shooting the fools who shoot at you. Should earn you a bit of isk, and you can ask silly questions about being a **** there.

EVE is what you, and the community make of it. The politics, PvP, Science / Research / Industry are all what I find most enjoyable about EVE.
I have played every single mainstream MMO to hit the market. From WoW to Warhammer to Global Agenda to Everquest to Runescape and most recently to RIFT.
I can say for a fact, that NONE of these games comes close to the community and playerbase of EVE. I have only been playing EVE for 25 days or so and I am IN LOVE with it. It is what I have always been looking for in a game <3

Getting in fleet with a bunch of my friends and going out and finding a fight with a roughly comparable fleet. That's probably the most fun. But I find enjoyment in lots of other things too. Sneaking a blockade runner past a large and angry camp is great fun too, even though I don't get to fire a shot.
Malcanis' Law: Whenever a mechanics change is proposed on behalf of "new players", that change is always to the overwhelming advantage of richer, older players. |

I love exploration and couriering ^_^ And cloaking in low/null safespots and chatting in local :P And generally chatting, the people in eve do give some very good conversations.
I want to eventually get into wormholes, but my isk is very low compared to the amount i'd need for that.
No rush though :) --- +Welcome to my world+ |

One thing I have found in EVE that is fun is to take my T1 Frigate and go into Lo Sec and salvage. I guess some people don't think the items are worth much.
Also it is fun taking my life in my own hands as I know I will be destroyed if caught by pirates. But that just adds to the fun.

For me, high-'risk' activities in lowsec and 0.0. It's not a game for carousing, that's for sure. There's long-term and short-term satisfaction from doing things right.

Honest Answer: You're going to be hamstrung by your presumably-low skills for a while. That's a simple and unfortunate reality about getting started in EvE.
Sure, like so many 40M SP veterans preach, you can go out and PvP in your first T1 frigate. Yes, that's true...you CAN go PvP on day 1. Will you be able to succeed? Probably not, unless, of course, you're going up against another person in your position. Is that likely to happen? No, not really.
That said, try everything you think would even remotely appeal to you. There's a lot of things you can do "fairly" quickly - though you will be fairly inefficient at all of them. Nonetheless, in time, you will be able to try anything you want. The things you "enjoy" will become apparent to you very quickly.
Best Advice: BE PATIENT!!! Getting over the SP hump - i.e. 5M SP - will take some time. Likely 3-4 months, depending on how efficient you are. Provided you keep paying your $15/month, you'll get there.

Eve is not "fun" like more traditional MMO's.
The fun in eve comes from the challenge. It's the most difficult MMO out there. If this is something you want, great.

You really have to find what you consider fun. I like nearly every aspect of the game, even mining. One piece of advice. You are not your ship. Don't be afraid to get exploded into a billion particles. Take precaution. Keep your clone up to date. Insure your ship. Don't fly what you can't afford to lose. But get out there. Some of the most fun and exciting things I've done in the game ended with me in a pod (or worse).

This man speaks truth, dont be afraid of dying. And like other people have said dont be afraid to try things, i went through a couple of weeks of mining and over a year of missioning before i finally found my perfect niche in low sec pvp.

Fine advice. The only thing I will say is this:
You can buy the proper clone and insure ships to negate/minimize the cost of getting popped. What you can't do is mitigate the loss of what could ostensibly be 100's of millions of ISK worth of chips/implants/plug-ins.
Having a PvP clone [Jump clone] is pretty key to minimizing the cost of death.
