Edited by: Tippia on 24/05/2011 23:37:25 It lets you tank 50% more (iirc), or conversely lets you fit 33% less tanking modules, leaving room for a lot of other toys. It lets you do this without making you more of a gank target, the way modules with the same effect would do.
Whether that counts as "worth it" or not is really up to you. Do you need the extra tank? Can you make use of the left-over fitting space? ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Cool, now do the implants have any stacking penalty's with Shield Boost Amp's or anything else?

No stacking penalty on them. Only modules and rigs are subject to stacking penalties. Ship bonuses, skills and implants are to my knowledge, never stacking penalized. They are really only worth it for pvp imho. Anyone who plugs in a crystal set to run lvl4's needs to have their head examined. Thus far you shall read, but no further; for this is my sig. |

TBH they're great for mission running, they let you shield tank jut about any ship(which is better for PVE) and they let you do it without needing to spend a bil on shield mods, which make you a big fat juicy target for gankers. |

Triple TP Golems need them sometimes.
And I don't think they are worth it for PvP when for the cost of 4-5 complete sets of crystals, you can buy a booster character and maybe even a T3, which has much more effect on your shield boosts.

I dont understand why. I go lvl4's with them and probably only able to succed because of them. What I'd never do is PvP with them as I can end pod killed and lose so expensive gear. NPC dont pod, so implants are only to running missions.
Omega? I don't think there is a Crystal Omega, Epsilon is the slot 5. Am I wrong?

There is an omega, yes.
Quote: Crystal Omega: This implant does nothing in and of itself, but when used in conjunction with other Crystal implants it will boost their effect.
Primary Effect: 50% bonus to the strength of all Crystal implant secondary effects
Note: Does not affect capital class modules.

maybe you should choose other ship? Try something other than Stealth Bomber
Seriously. Lvl4's are pretty easy for 2xLAR2 Dominix. Passive fitted Gila or Rattlesnake does it pretty well too. On gila you even don't need to change resistance amplifiers for specific rats.

The trick is that crystals lets you tank using fewer modules, which means you can dedicate those slots to killing stuff faster.
The point of having a head full of tanking implants isn't really to make L4s easier to tank ù it's to make your ship run the missions faster (granted, this also makes them easier to tank, but in a more indirect way). ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

agree. however that guy speaks he ONLY can run lvl4's BECAUSE of crystal set. Unless "success in mission" means "shortest possible time of completion".....

As someone who is familiar with these on an intimate level, I would like to say that crystals make any ship immmensely better. Crystals on a pvp ship in losec are absolutely great fun, and I knew a friend who ran a golem that could easily tank any lvl 4 with 1x xl booster, 1x invuln (faction I think it was), 1x 100m ab, and then the rest was all target painters. He could do nearly full dps to every ship and absolutely destroyed missions in no time at all.
I myself am more pvp oriented, but I actually run some guristas missions, and would be more than happy to hook you up with a set ingame for cheaper than jita prices(if you could do me a favor or get me some stuff in return from ur LP store we could work out a better deal maybe :)

I'm just learning about these Crystal implants and have been playing around with the numbers. Is it true that a full set including Omega would give me well over double my booster's effect?

A full set of crystals gets you ~50% more tank, so if you can tank e.g. 800 DPS now, you'll tank 1200 DPS after plugging all 6 implants in. Low grade crystals get you about 32% more, so you would only be able to tank about 1050 DPS with those.

Check it out in EFT: assemble your favourite active shield-tanking vessel and check the stats it has with the Crystal set.
For example, using my skills, a simple gistii b-type small shield booster boosts for an amount equal to 88 shield HP. After the sets, the boost goes up to 135, wich is 50% more. Quite a considerable upgrade, imagine how this works using a Tengu with the shield boosting subsystem, while sig and speed tanking.
The main advantage here is pretty clear. It allows the use of less modules for tanking and more module for ganking. Imagine how this works on a Golem, a ship that already has, by itself, a shield boosting bonus and makes heavy use of bonused target painters and torpedoes.
And this is just the first thing i could think of, imagine what this does for murderers like a Machariel or Nightmare. Actually, what DOES it do for those ships? they already have plenty tanking slots :P

Look up the videos Burning Eve 5 and 6, altho I believe there are many others that showcase these. These show what a nightmare can do with HG Crystals.
Next look up garmonation 8, and look at the machariel fight about halfway through. That shows what a machariel can do. Also in garmonation 8, and in Drake3.0, there are examples of 100mn AB tengus owning face with HG crystals in :)
Again, talk to me, I can get you entire crystal sets(HG or LG) for cheaper than jita pricing. ;)

They are awesome for the reasons other people have stated - EXCEPT you then have +3 learning implants instead of +5. Decide if that's worth it.
You should have absolutely no trouble tanking level 4 missions, do not buy crystals because you hare having trouble tanking. That is a sign that something else needs to be fixed with your fit/strategy.
Buy crystals when you have no trouble running level 4s and want to be able to drop tank mod(s) for more gank to run them faster, and you don't mind losing a tiny bit of training time.

I'm thinking of putting in a set into my jump clone for when I'm flying around, and then for those days/weeks where I'm station-bound shift back to my training (+5) clone. At least I think that makes sense. Other than the 24 hour wait, is there anything I'd be stupid doing? Oh, and yes, I can easily tank L4s. I like LOTS of tank (I often lose track of things), so this would allow me to be satisfied there and still add in more gank.

No, no. Succed means complete mission and if posible with time bonus reward. I have about ten million skill points and go solo with a drake. Some are quite easy and quick, others not so. I have the A,B,G and D and without them probably couldnt hold in there.

Erm... there are better platforms for a crystal set than a Drake, because active shield tanking a Drake for PvE is basically costing yourself more to only accomplish as much as a Maelstrom or Raven.
That is of course assuming you active shield tank your crystal Drake to begin with...

Really, we newbies remain newbies forever partially because impossiblility of understand the giberish you, vets, use to speak. Or in English, what yure taling about? I dont have a crystal drake. Crystal goes in the brains and will improve any ship in same proportion. Then it happens I trained to drive a drake as best as time allowed me so far. Part of my shiels are active and part are not and there are still some room to harden them a little more. I assume pluging the crystals that I still miss will make me tank more or,as the lady said, use some medium slots for other type of upgrade. One achievement at a time. So I am trying to improve my drake performance with crystals and no my crystal performance with drake. Please, keep telling me what I am doing wrong, I apreciate the imput.

Excuse me. It is (or was, perhaps) somewhat common to refer to ships flown by implanted pilots by prefacing them with the name of the implant set; e.g. Slave(d) Legion, Talisman Bhaalghorn, Snake Vaga, etc. You mentioned having a (partial) Crystal set plugged in, while flying a Drake.
Quote: Crystal goes in the brains and will improve any ship in same proportion.
When I said a Maelstrom or Raven would be better, I meant because you could take advantage of the tremendous burst tank of an XL shield booster and superior DPS to complete missions faster.

Crystal sets are essentially a way of maximising your tank without fitting mods that will make you a suicide-gank target. In other words they are very worth it. Just don't tell anyone you have them or someone will gank and pod you for the luls.

If you want to see the effect rather than just hear the stats then numbers, buy a set on sisi, they are only 100isk a pop there. I would say that if you are trying to active tank a gang-link tengu would be a better choice for the price, but There is no reason why you can't have both, if you have the isk.

no, you dont need them, most effective mission ships can be max gank fitted, and still tank missions just fine without the need for crystals, plug in some +5s instead!

Perhaps it's time to point out the obvious: Crystal implants only increase shield boost amount. So they're not gonna do you any good on your passive Drake, for instance (and no, they do nothing for Invuls, either; nor regen); nor for any ship setup that doesn't use active shield boosting, for that matter. Caveat emptor!
Also, be aware that Crystal implants come with only a +3 attribute bonus. So, ideally you can only use 3 of them for the first five implants slots (using the other 2 for +5 implants), plus maybe the Omega one for slot 6. Unless you're a superveteran, who can afford to keep learning at +3 from now on.
Just sayin', is all. --

Just go with the LG-Crystals to be honest. You can pick up an entire set for around $800,000,000.00 compared to $2,500,000,000.00 for a HG-Crystal set. The difference between the two really isn't that significant unless you're running Complex gear and if you're doing that, you're going to die sometime very soon anyway.
To answer your question though, yes - they are absolutely worth it when it comes to shield tanking.
