Hello fellow Eve-Players.
I got a question for you all. How many of you ignore that whole Facebook/Twitter bull****? Ill make the start.
No facebook account. No twitter.
No whatever - i just use my goddamn telephone if i want "stay in touch with my friends" I dont need to tell the world that i am ****ting right now. I dont feel the urge to upload my private photos to the interwebs.
Really, what is the sense behind fb and such data-mining crapsites?

Same here, at least for those first two.
Then again, I prefer to use IMs/email instead of a telephone. I also prefer forums and chat channels to podcasts or voicecoms.
"Verba volant, scripta manent". Or in our day and age, "Voice data is big and hard to search, text isn't". Chatlogs FTW.

No offense, but people like you said that about the telephone, about radio, then about television, then about the internet.
FB and Twitter are just another form of media. How you use each one is up to you.
Okey, so Twitter may just be good for finding out Ryan Gigg's name before anyone else, but FB is great for regaining contact with old friends.

Hey Bek,
You are not alone in finding that facebook/twitter whatever doesn't fulfill a need in your life. A lot of people do though, Horses for courses I suppose. Main thing I want to say is dont think there's something wrong with you cause you dont like it. |

Facebook/Twitter might not be as stupid as you (or I) would like to think it is.
Back in the Old Days, people lived much closer together (think villages) and were in much closer/frequent contact.
Nowadays, modern transportation and work schedules have increased the physical and temporal distances between people, so facebook and twitter might be a practical way to itch that small village community gene/instinct.
Or not.

Nah, i dont care about it. It just makes me wonder - are people today simply incapable of "real" friendships? Like, calling all friends together on weekend and drink a beer or two?
Instead, and i quote what i heard in the train today (yes, i am a cheap bastard and have to take a train to my workplace): "I will put my status on "available" later, we can chat about it ok?" - From a girl. Seriously, i needed a minute or two until i realised what she talked about **** **** Please send me mail if you want to sell big piles of corpses. Must be in mint condition. (space-frozen)

What about friends who live on the other side of the world or people you lost touch with when you left your old job/school/university/?

I don't use FB because the billions its made is from selling the information people put on it.
Anyone from the government to those annoying telemarketers can just slide some cash to FB and get every conversation you've ever had there plus all your friends and activities. It's not that i have anything to hide, i just find that really creepy, and the way Zuckerberg dodges the issue makes me think he's a weasel.

No, it does not (Imo). I am living on the north site of Germany, had to move here for work. My friends are living in middle and south Germany, Munich especially. Sooo...we dont use Facebook, we just arrange a meet-up like one weekend in a month. Much to speak, no woman - beats Facebook by an unknown massive amount. **** **** Please send me mail if you want to sell big piles of corpses. Must be in mint condition. (space-frozen)

The only source of communication that people can contact me is either phone, steam, AIM, MSN,Facebook and quite recently, Skype.
I was adamant against using facebook up until a year and half or so ago. Kept being bugged into using it, so its annoying. Then I decided "Ah, **** it fine, I'll get that ****."
FB is very nice to use. I keep status updates from my relatives. In other states like, Oregon, far down Santa Barbara (I live in San Jose) in California, and 10000000000 relatives in another country like Mexico. Free of charge unlike long distance calls.
I made sure "friends" and friends are seperate in groups. RL Friends/Relatives, Eve-Online, and gaming friends. Useful thing I must say, but I can assure you that I won't use twitter. FB is all you need. I see no real point of getting twitter. Nowadays, you can connect to MOST websites and log in using FB. Did on few sites, but still uncomfortable with that.
So yeah, only thing I add any strangers into my FB (and steam) is either from friend's "friends" on a rare occasions and ones I regularly play games with. Don't just add random stranger on a whim to your list, not only that, be careful what you post.
Only YOU can control information. FB provides all the information control you need, unless you're lacking some control, you can always tell FB people themselves to add it. FB is one information people can get easily, for example, adding some unknown person, like a "friend" debt collector and can harass you. Another example, being like an idiot and not setting your status post propertly and tell people on FB like "Ok, going out to vacation for few days/weeks/months" and you come back home, to find out your home is robbed rather cleanly. ----------------------------------- Peace through power! |

I like the notion that if you use FB you dont have "real" friends... Or some how forgot the use of a phone...
WTF bit of a false dichotomy there. You cant do or use both? Or I dunno use both to communicate?

Facebook is CIA¦s handmaiden, and the free version of a dating/cheating on spouses site. Military experts call it F#ckb**k for a reason.
Twitter is amusing, mostly useless and a reason to use the RSS feature of Firefox. |

Well, like the Americans say ... "Good for you!"
For me tho, It's very convenient. I live abroad, even tho I am Venezuelan I live in Panama and move between Venezuela, USA and Panama all the time. Several of my friends are so spread out , some living in the American Continent, others in Europe and others in Asia and Australia that honestly, there's no better way to keep in touch with them. If your friends/relatives all live an easy train ride away yep, good for you, mine are spread all over the WORLD and only way I can keep talking and joking and just plain socializing is through FB.
Yes, FB sux, with their data mining (Nothing Banks and the Govt in the US/Panama/Venezuela didnt know about anyway) and their ads are worthless to me as I never buy stuff through them, only data miner company that owns a chunk of my habits is STEAM, FB is just filled with me bluttering random nonsense and sending venezuelan themed youtube videos to my friends/family abroad plus occasional funny video to my family + pics.
If you want to avoid using those services great, but that bull**** service is what keeps me in touch with the world. --- Viva VENEZUELA!!! Archipelago Theory

There's really a place for people to step up with truly private instant messengers and services like facebook. Awhile back i heard about an IM program in development which was going to be encrypted with no central node things had to pass through, but i don't think it ever got anywhere.

Oh wait, I have a FB account. I resisted for many years and finally registered not that long ago. You don't need to put any real personal details in, but for keeping in touch with your mates (assuming enough have also signed up to FB) it is way easier and quicker than sending texts and emails. FB wins because it makes it so easy.

I used to have a facebook page, and I found it extremely useful for keeping in touch with international or interstate friends. I had been thinking about deleting it for about two years, but couldn't justify the loss of functionally.
But recently, my local police department got given the power and tools to search facebook images without permission, warning or even a notification that your images had been searched, and in a fit of anti-orwellianism, I deleted it.

I only use facebook to contact a select few people who never seem to check their email, calling them would be a waste of time as I have nothing of real value to say.

Some people don't live in one place their entire life and sometimes move around, even all over the world. FB is a great tool to keep everyone under one roof and quickly and efficiently stay in touch with whom you want to stay in touch.
Twitter is for narcissistic d!ckheads, though.

no fb here. this is because I have no real compulsion to keep in touch with everyone I ever met. usually because: I don't really like most of the people I have met (or only met them through a job or college course) or I owe them/their company money.
I also don't stay 'friends' with ex's and I don't really want them stalking me and jerking off over my profile photos for the rest of their life. that kind of thing really ..

Facebook: I keep in touch with a couple of people I went to school with and as a lot of them moved away it's handy. I also have family who live around the country and abroad so again it's handy for keeping in touch with them. As for friends, rather than phoning or texting each one I can just post on Facebook that I am going to the pub, cinema, cafe e.t.c, as an open invite and it just makes things easy to organise. I don't have many people on Facebook and I only add people I actually know in person apart from a few folks from Eve who are either good friends or a certain defender of Rancer.
Twitter: Tried it when it first started and didn't see anything that appealed to me, tried it more recently and realised it was an awesome tool not for social networking but for getting in insight to world affairs. I followed a number of people in Egypt when they had their anti-government protests starting back in January. Not only could I watch the news and read up on events on the net but I could follow peoples minute by minute accounts of what was happening in the centre of Tahrir Square, you get a completely different insight when you are constantly reading a persons comments as it's happening, quite emotional at times.
The different forms of social networking are just tools and can be used to suit individual needs, if it was just a method of getting thousands of people to see that you had beans on toast for breakfast then I wouldn't be using them.
