Not quite sure if this have been asked before, but I'll give it a shot.
I've just installed my computer from scratsh, and can't find a antivirus progrm that works properly. At the moment I've installed F-Secure Antivirus, but my computer hangs from time to time when I start a scan. Sometimes it doesn't start at all, or when I start a scan, it want to scan all folders and subfolder. I need to comfig F-Secure to not go into folder like "System Infomation Folder", but by default I dont have access to that folder. And i find this a bit backwards to comfig my AntiVirus to not scan i that folder.
I've used Norton AntiVirus (NAV) before and was very satisffied with it, but I wanted to try something ells, since some of my friends told my NAV used to much resorses.
My simpel question: What antivirus would you reconmend and why (dont need a 10 page explomation )?
PS: I only need a antivirus program, not firewall, since I'm allready behind a hardware firewall.

I've tried AVG and avast. I was satisfied with both of them but I really don't have very extensive knowledge about them and I usually know what I'm doing so rarely have virus troubles. __________ Capacitor research |

AVG is indeed very good, and what's more, both the program and the updates are free!

Edited by: Jiin on 14/02/2005 15:44:40 Kaspersky uses one of the best engines around, and is by far one of the best antivirus programs I have ever used. Recommended by experts, used by iddeeots, loved by all. :) Give it a try.

Of course, the best defence against viruses is to stop and think before opening attachments.

Panda software's Titanium Antivirus is pretty good.

I've heard extremely good things about N0D32, I've tried it, and you'll probably find it's the fastest AV scanner out there. I currently use AntiVir (free version , which is updated daily).

AVAST works perfectly for me, it's free for personal use and it found viruses that Norton didn't find (both updated regularly)

Very good topic, especially since I've read recently on an article on Cnet news about how some virus writers are getting very tricky with the way they are going about writing these damn things. I saw a mention there about how some new virii are actually disabling norton now as part of their routines. Don't know if that's ever been done before, but it never hurts to ask for other people's experiences with other anti-virus progs.
I use mainly norton as my anti-virus and it this topic is very helpful for sugesstions/alternatives to use alongside it. One other one I've tried is that trendmicro free online scan, housecall, it scans online and gives results. Not too bad I guess for a free online anti-virus scan.

Bro, say what u will about the big corporations, but Symantec is awesome when it comes to Anti-virus programs. Norton Anti-Virus, System Works and other Symantec products are top of the line.

So far in my travels I have tried: AVG panda (IRC guys made fun of me for it) vet mcaffee Norton AV Symantec AV
and the hands down winner for system performance, ease of use, and best security IMHO is Symantec AV. All the others have some great things going for them, but the problems I encountered meant that Symantec won purely due to it working effectively with out me having to think about it. ----------- "Remember people: Omber is the biggest evil ever created, DO NOT let it get to you!" Avast is my preference.
Symantec and Norton are alright but they are far too invasive and are a bugger when it comes to resources.

If you are willing to spend money on antivirus software, the best one around is nullnullNOD32 Its extremly fast, and detects more virii than any other AV products around.

F-Secure (corporate edition) was great a couple of versions ago. I tried the home edition of F-Secure recently though, and it really sucked - I don't want an unstable antivirus tool, so I removed it.
Currently trying avast. Seems ok, but the virus definition updates don't seem to be updated very frequently (they were 4 days old after the first update, got a newer version today though).

Edited by: Magdala on 16/02/2005 01:00:53 If you're willing to pay, get eTrust EZAntivirus from Computer Associates.
If you want free, go with AVG as mentioned before.
Symantec and (especially) Norton are, in my opinion, too much of a resource hog.
eTrust gets updated frequently.

Without a doubt it has to be Trend, the fastest at updating with new pattern files.
Not a resource hog and actually finds and remove virus's unlike others i've had the displesure of using.

Kaspersky is the best, of course. About a 99.8% detection rate, compared to like 90% for Norton, 70% for Trend, 60% for AVG... etc. And trust me--it catches EVERYTHING. -- The best description of alliances, ever:

Seeing as everyone have an opinion on whats the best AV software around, i suggest taking a look on the Virus Bulletin. A great source for information and comparative tests.
