Had BT Infinity installed yesterday.
Claimed download speeed of 40Mbps, claimed upload speed 10Mbps.
My connection:
Does pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. I'm impressed

Aycliffe has BT Infinity, Bishop is getting it in September, my town which is between them two has no sign of getting it in the near future whatsoever.

I was given a nice surprise when I just ran a speed test, seems my average speed / ping is better now than it was a month ago although the upload speed is still completley ****.

Not bad for a cable TV supplier. I got an offer to double speed U and D last week for 2 dollars more each month. I was sad I had to delcline, since I could not commit to a new 12 month subscription since I have to move soon 
I know it is not BT, just wanted to run the test and comapre the norwegian supplier to BT

Those speed tests are really only an estimate and can be affected by a number of different things, if the test actually took longer you'd get a more accurate number.
On average you probably won't exceed 31mb/s

test was also carried out by engineer :P 39.48 at Master socket
so i dont doubt the 37mb speed
also couple of other testing sites come up with 37mb

Considering the fact I regularly get noticeably more than those listed speeds while torrenting -- highest I've got was around 5.5 MB/sec down with 2 MB/sec up (and I quite regularly get 2+ MB/s down with 0.5 MB/s up), highest numbers which would translate into around 44 Mbit/s down and around 12 Mbit/s up (my connection is allegedly "UP TO 50 Mbit/sec" with a very small guaranteed bandwidth) -- I am fairly certain my ISP does not prioritize any "net speed site" traffic at all.

8.10 megabit per second, not 8.10 megabyte per second.
So, just over 1 megabyte/second. Not much more than the 750 kilobyte/second you get.
Since I somehow doubt you only get around 94 kilobyte/second uploads.
P.S. Just out of curiosity, can you guys say how much you pay per month for your connections ?

Yo Akita, why does your net take such a significant hit once you start putting on distance in comparison to say... mine?
Also I never really understood the correlation between Megabits and Megabytes? Is it like Miles and kilometers or something?

Most of Europe is full of high-speed fiber-optics, making bandwidth dirt-cheap in the area.
Romania in particular is rarely even close to full traffic capacity, and the ISP I'm with (RDS) has its own national fiber backbone, and pretty good fiber-to-the-building coverage in most cities, and it's not the only similar country-wide network (the former national telephone company and the national power transport company also have decent ones, and there are a few other smaller ones AFAIK, plus several other types of networks).
RDS has some nice out-of-country peering agreements, it links directly into the DE-CIX in Frankfurt alongside many other European providers, so most of Europe gets speeds that are comparable to those in the country.
However, outside of Europe, that's where bandwidth gets a bit more expensive, so you can feel the constriction.

bit = 0 or 1
byte = 0 to 255

I downgraded my 100/100mb to a 10/10 a while ago. My account had run out and I thought I'd test what kind of difference it did to my internet useage.
Basicly I only play EVE, the occational LoL game and a few other MMO's when I'm bored. I never download ****, no movies, no games, no tv-series, etc, I only game and browse news. Oh and, I live in Sweden, so northern Europe with a quite decent infrastructure.
So far I havn't even noticed a difference in EVE, at all. In a few of the MMO's I've had a difference in loading time, but in the gameplay I noticed nothing at all.
One thing I did notice that was quite vital tho: My 100/100 ISP really struggled with asian MMO's. Somehow that ISP hit a bottleneck when trying to reach Singapore. It worked flawlessly with the EVE server and most US servers I'd try access, tho. The 10/10 ISP was a completely different case. It actually went faster (then the 100/100) on asian servers, thanks to the route there, but it has (at a few occations) had small loading spikes on EVE servers instead.
TL;DR-version -
I'd look more at what kind of infrastructure your ISP use, than the actual speed they prosise you. What Akita posted previously goes pretty much in-line with my experience.
