Hi I'm relatively new to the game and at this point in time I'm faced with a decision. Currently I'm mining using a Probe with two Miner I lasers. I've got about 1 million credits now and I can either spend it all to get a destroyer or I can spend a little over half that and get an industrial so that I can mine more.
The problem is however that it's a hoarder and only has 1 hi-slot, thus I'm estimating it will take over an hour to fill it's hold with my current equipment. I'm still a ways off getting mining for so a strip miner is out of the question right now.
So I need help with this, should I go for the destroyer or the industrial (as a side note I'd be making nearly half a mil per run in the industrial, though as I said that would actually take an hour to do with one mining laser). If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them. Thanks for the advice in advance.

Edited by: Mikel Crenshaw on 15/02/2005 01:49:30 Thanks for the advice, I didn't even notice there was a mining cruiser. As an additional question has anyone seen a Minmatar destroyer for less than 900,000 ISK. I'm not sure how off the price in the item database is but I can barely find one for less than 1,000,000 ISK and it's starting to get frustrating. I don't care how far away it is (I'm in Amalle right now) but if I could find one really cheap relatively close then that would just be awesome.

Edited by: Jonas Bane on 15/02/2005 06:40:55 If you want to keep mining as a source of income or for building you'll want to invest in an industrial at some point. But instead of mining in it, just use it to haul your ore. Keep mining in your probe and jettison it into a can. Once you have enough to fill your hauler, head back and use it to move the ore back to the station.
It does open you up to people flying by and taking your ore. But you'll be more efficient with your time. Best solution is to find a few friends and have a dedicated hauler in your group.

Honestly, I'd instead decide based on what you want to do for the next month. You can work on mining skills if you plan on joing a nice mining corp soon with regular ops. Either you or someone there can efficiently haul and refine the group's ore so the op continues uninterrupted. Alternatively, if you plan on going solo anyhow, i.e. with agents, then go for the destroyer or just keep working on your frig skills. You can do level 1 and 2 agents solo with not too much trouble. If you can pilot and fit a destroyer fairly well and are not worried about risking your money then it will be even easier.
If you are looking at a destroyer for mining purposes.. well it's better than a frig but not likely to be worth it considering the limitations of the cpu.
My advice is not to buy any ship that requires +90% of your liquid assets. Such things are quite fragile, so as a rule of thumb that will be more important later on than it is now, buy and use that which you can afford to replace. A mining fitting is fairly cheap (thus uninteresting to most sensible pirates few though they are) but a combat fitting is going to cost equal to or many times the value of your ship and that portion will not be offset by insurance.

Edited by: MinorFreak on 15/02/2005 10:23:29 Edited by: MinorFreak on 15/02/2005 10:15:15 thrasher. 170 cpu, 2 low slots. Assuming you can afford that ship you can afford to browse the market for XeCl minin lasers (buy at less than 250k isk each)- electronics 2, along with 2 BASIC co-processors, gives you 214 CPU. Xecl lasers consume 48 cpu. That gives enough for 4 of them, and leaving you with 18 cpu extra (you could skip 1 basic co-processor and still fit 4)
- unfortunately, even with electronics 5 you'd not be able to fit more than 4 of them...hell, you'd have to have electronics lvl4 plus electronics upgrades lvl4 plus 2 co-processor IIs to fit 5 xecl lasers, and believe me that just not worth it for a measly increase when you could just get a bigger ship.
If i was you, i'd train up Caldari frigate to lvl 3 so you could fly the Cormorant. now, she's a beautiful n00b mining vessel, imho. She can fit 4 xecl lasers right off the bat, and with that basic coprocessor set up, as above, you'll have 5 xecl lasers going; though you'd need the above advanced setup to fit 6
Anyways, do by an industrial as soon as possible. having said that please don't mine in 1.0 systems but try 0.9 systems so the chances of some "waste-removal-specialist" helping him/herself to your 'jet-can' is much much less.
You'll also need to know how to set 'insta-jumps' for this to work efficiently.
Personally, i'd suggest you join 'Ordo Ministorum', but since you're a stinking minmatar "freedom fighter" *cough*terrorist*cough* i'll not bother referring you to this page: 1st month walkthrough (backup)

Yup first things first get a destroyer their fun & can mine quite nicely.
Forget the Caldari thing though, whilst your training those skills you could have increased your own. The perversity of the Universe tends towards a maximum - O'Toole's Corollary of Finagle's Law |

If you can get a buddy with a badger or badger 2 to drop you a couple secure containers to mine to you can mine more faster and let the industrial do the hauling. ------------------------------------- You are all worthless, and weak.

The scythe is the minmater cruiser of choice for mining atm, its really good. The hoarder will do fine until u train indy l4 then u can go for a mammoth (which i still love for those long dangerous runs).
As for the thrasher, these look like a lot of fun and I love hunting npcs in 0.0 with these, they take out the frigs and webb the bs's while i pound em with my apoc.
P.S. work on your mining skills as it means less time mining and more time doing fun stuff in your destroyer. BTW when u can put named guns on your destroyer they really help.
Good luck
