CCP, I just want you to know straight-up. Your decision to make Dust514 a PS3 exclusive... Well let's just say I'm a little flustered. No, I'm downright ****ed. I've followed this game since you announced it, and now I find out that I won't even be able to play it.
First I pay 15 dollars a month, then I save money to buy a new computer in order to actually be able to get the full experience out of Eve Online, then you expect me to pay for not only Dust itself, which I was fine with, but also an entirely new game system. So now I don't even know what I'm going to do. This was going to be my new favorite game, one that was groundbreaking in what you were going to attempt to do ; Merge an MMO with a console game. Well, I can't see myself being able to play your game now, so I might as well forget about it. I realize, "Oh, the Xbox can't support what we want to do! It can't work!" Well, maybe you should downgrade your efforts. This may hit you hard, even seem insulting. But not only will you pull in more money, as every company should desire to do, but you'll reach a much more vast community. Many hopeful Eve players who own Xboxes feel the same way I do, and by not rushing into the future so fast, you might find that you'll save not only your reputation, but a loyal playerbase. But if you don't attempt to make Dust work on the Xbox, or even work to downgrade it to compensate for the differences in processing power between the Xbox360 and the PS3, you might find your subscriber accounts dropping severely. Neither of us want that. If you at least provide, in detail, the reasons you can't release Dust514 for the Xbox 360 platform, then the other Xbox owners and myself might understand. Quite a few of us will still feel cheated, and never be able to play your newest game. But at least we can take comfort in knowing why. CCP, I beg of you to help us help you. The amount of money brought by a two-platform release would ultimately provide for better possibilities of an expansion for Dust in the way of funding, but we leave the rest to you. One shot may make the difference in a universe, but one decision may change that universe for the better, or worse. It will open it up to everyone, or shut it off to a select group. It will change everyone's feelings about your company, and inspire future loyalties. Or it will damage you forever, leaving what could have been a great thing, to no more than a regretful memory. This we leave up to you, CCP. Decide who you keep, and who you forsake.

You have like nearly a year to get a PS3 before this comes out. Get over yourself. If you don't want to do it then don't.
CCP might not explain the Xbox thing as to not burn a bridge so to speak.
Yeah, I don't own a PS3 either. A Xbox 360 actually, but this might convince me to buy a PS3.

They're going for cheap now due to the outages, and all the hacking... I mean what is this the 3rd time in 2 months?
Literally the COD people got ****ed turned in their Ps3's for xbox so they could play COD online again.
I'd have just played another game...
So my only concern is to play online how much info do I need to hand Sony? No offense when you claim to have bolstered your security, and then leave something as simple as a SQL injector in... You're just down right negligent on the level that Sony is operating at.
And yeah making it exclusive is a dumb move that just helps the console's out, and limits your revenue stream. But I'm guessing they couldn't find a way to make the cross platforms communicate, and so were stuck with having to choose one.

It's rubbish that no Eve player can play the game they are funding without buying a console. Really why would I want such a useless contraption just to play a single game. Xbox or PS it doesn't matter.

The team at Microsoft who run Xbox Live aren't always developer friendly. They have a rather extreme "My way or the highway" mindset. Case in point: Valve, a much better known company than CCP in both the console and PC market, wanted to provide free updates to Team Fortress 2 (and all their other xbox 360 games). Microsoft refused to allow them to do this. Every step of the way. Valve was effectively forced to either charge money for DLC, or not give xbox 360 users any updates at all. Very few people are happy with the state of Team Fortress 2 on the consoles. DLC of any sort for all Valve games on the PC is completely free. Not so for the xbox 360.
If Valve can't provide minor DLC and updates free of charge to their customers on the 360, and can't argue with the suits at microsoft, what deludes you into thinking CCP can have their way? CCP wants to continue to develop and provide free expansions for DUST, the way they do with eve. Microsoft would not allow that. Period. This isn't about the hardware, or needing to "downgrade" the game to make it work on the 360. It's about microsoft not being willing to engage with CCP's vision.
I am stuck with a 360 for now and won't be able to get DUST because of this either, so I am slight disappointed by this, but then again I never really expected that CCP would be able to convince microsoft to let them do it their way. I understand your frustration, owning the "wrong" console for a game you want to play is a tough thing, but if you want to throw words like "cheated" and "forsaken" around, direct it at Microsoft, not CCP. If I had to choose between playing a neutered dust with no future development or temporarily being unable to play dust because it was done right on a console I didn't own, I'd choose the latter.

I'll give you an answer, one that's probably a lot closer to the truth than you might like, but is nonetheless very true.
It's simply about access to the platform. Microsoft does not like it when games need access to servers other than those for Xbox Live. CCP would have demanded unlimited access to Tranquility, and Microsoft would have refused. That alone would have sunk Dust 514 for Xbox.
There's a good reason most console MMOs go to the playstation, and that is that server access.
Microsoft also doesn't like free patching, and it will charge developers quite a bit of money to deploy patches after the first one. And since CCP games tend to be all about the free expansions, that is a bad thing.

I'll give you an answer, one that's probably going to sting a bit, but is nonetheless probably true.
It's simply about access to the platform. Microsoft does not like it when games need access to servers other than those for Xbox Live or hosted my Microsoft themselves. It makes sense to think that way, as it is more secure, and you have more control over the bandwidth demands of your network.
CCP would have demanded unlimited access to Tranquility, and Microsoft would have refused. That alone would have sunk Dust 514 for Xbox.
There's a good reason most console MMOs go to the PS3, and that is that server access. Sony is obviously much more open with regards to external networks accessing clients of PSN, just look at the example of Steam. A PC centric platform who's social and game-mediation functions are now fully accessible from a PSN client. Only for Portal 2 at present, but there's quite a bit of growth there.
Suggesting a similar connection on the Xbox360 to microsoft probably would have given their platform managers a heart-attack.
Microsoft also doesn't like free additional downloads much, and it will charge developers quite a bit of money to deploy patches after the first one, same goes for DLC.
And since CCP games tend to be all about the free expansions, that is a bad thing.
The Xbox360 certainly could have run Dust 514, I have no doubts there, but it's Microsoft's own policies about cross-networking and external access that would have torpedoed the release of Dust on their console.
That's all speculation, I speculate that Sony paid them big bucks for this.

It does seem odd they'd release it on the least successful console but it's probably something to do with the fact that microsoft disallow free content updates on the xbl marketplace.

Sadly the game will fail horribly if it is confined to the PS3. Not a big enough market to make an already fringe FPS a success.
If it were coming out for the Xbox or PC I would buy it but PS3 is fail. Smaller marketshare than Xbox, Horrible online service and apparently wide open to hackers.
Big mistake on this one CCP

Edited by: Anny Jackson on 08/06/2011 16:17:34 Edited by: Anny Jackson on 08/06/2011 16:15:05 This DUST 514 thing's gonna be an epic fail. First CCP makes it console only. Ok, there are a lot of console users around. And some of them will perhaps be interested in MMO-shooter. But then they make it PS3-only, and it's a pure loss. There are less PS3 users in Europe and America (where most EVE users live) than PC ones. I mean PC exclusive The Witcher 2 has been selling better than most PS3 titles. There are more PC Battlefield users than PS3 ones. And CCP thinks DUST will succeed? Nah, they are wrong. There is one thing I'm sure in there will be no Russian players in DUST. To good or bad...

I appreciate them wanting to branch out to the console market, but I think making it EXCLUSIVELY to the PS3 was a mistake. Latest NPD figures show the PS3 flat-lining and the 360 continuing in growth. http://www.armchairarcade.com/neo/node/4099
(I have both consoles, and was looking forward to this game tremendously, but I very much dislike playing FPS on them, so will not be purchasing DUST. I enjoy my FPS with a mouse/keyboard on my heavy duty gaming PC much much more.)
More than either console however, I want to understand why CCP chose to exclude it's biggest player base, the PC/Mac user?

I thought the video engine in a PS3 was in fact superior to the XBox360. I would think that if you want to be able to play games without lag, or performance issues (Such as with COD Black Ops on XBox360 - Overheats easily), you would, as a Developer of a resource intensive game, want the best machine for the job. I may be mistaken, I own a 360 and it is constantly riddled with problems only when playing COD. So, with that, FLAME ON?!
