I saw someone saying that they thought Dust was unnecessary and they didn't want it because Battlefield 3 was coming out, because... other FPS games, whatever.
Here's the thing.
It's entirely possible that new editions of games like Battlefield will be better FPSes, in some ways - they've been doing FPS games for a long time, after all. Of course, they'll still be yet another iteration of Real World Guns, which... aren't we sick of those yet?
There's sci-fi FPSes, too, although I haven't really heard of a good one in a while.
But I'm going to be playing Dust, for one simple reason:
Dust is in New Eden.
You play other multiplayer FPS games, and they're good fun. Mayhem, carnage, explosions, and all that stuff. And then the battle ends, and, win or lose, you've got nothing to show for it but maybe some points.
In Dust you can fight for conquest, you can fight to build or destroy, and a battle can mean something. Win or lose, there's consequences.
That's why it's different. That's why it's better. And that's why I believe a whole lot of PS3 gamers are going to sign on, in time - because each battle you fight can be worth something.
I can't wait.

Edited by: voiddragon on 09/06/2011 08:00:36 I had never considered the full potential of dust when it was announced until now. I thought they'd just be gun for hire for eve players and match making would involve black rise planets / faction controlled planets.
But no, CCP went further and made it possible for dust players to fight eve players for territory so that they can build, expand and improve their corporation. In one word, epic. I never considered that.
Comparing it to COD and Battlefield 3 is pointless, people are going to buy both of them. So why not Dust too? And if CCP play their cards right, create a truly immersive and massive world for them to explore that they continue to expand upon, it will outlast both games.
Really, the only games that would contend with Dust 514 are Planetside 2(no information on this game) and Battlefield 2143. But even then, it's FTP. So, I can see a lot of people choose to play dust over other games every now and again and planetside 2 would be subscription based...
No idea where I was going with this, just giving my observations.

If DUST is dependant on CCP servers then *any* FPS with dedicated local servers beats it without even trying.

I would agree, but I somehow doubt we'll have 300-player battles. I'm pretty sure CCP's more than capable of hosting servers in matches with player numbers comparable to other FPS's.

1 guy can disband a 2000 man alliance and wipe out trillions, that's cool. Give back a noob 10 mill? No, that's game breaking.

Stop jumping to conclusions... That's not how it works and CCP even said that Dust is different to EVE because it requires server nodes across the globe for lagless fights.
What CCP said is that Dust 514 server that stores the information on the current states of the planets will connect with TQ's PLantary Interaction node and this will work better if they're just in the same geographical location. This does not mean that it's running on TQ alongside eve.

You think a CCP server; which regularly handles hundreds of people at once and can at times handle as many as 3000+ connections, will somehow have a problem with a 16vs16 fps game?
Really?

Right, so this is what you are looking for, in a First person shooter? Not good gameplay? Good engine? Balanced? Fun? You just want to have a virtual price?

it's what some people look for, especially after the shiny-new gloss wears off. Anyone old enough to remember the first Heavy Gear by activision? They never quite worked out the map on which borders changed based on players online combat results, but I can tell you lots of folks really liked the idea that their fps combat worked to affect a change as a part of something larger.
Sure some folks won't give a crap, but some will, and again CCP won't have any competion in that regard. Perhaps dust will do alright after all...

I'm pretty confident Dust will have those. FPS games aren't that complicated.

After seeing the trailer released during E3 it's highly impacted my choice to purchase a PS3 for my home.
I'm extremely excited to see the potential impact this game can have on the universe, what types of players it brings in, and what type of expansion will be possible for our corporations. I'm very excited.
1 question: Are the experiences had in Dust directly related to Planetary Interactions? Will I loose my ability to harvest and create if a battle is happening? Could I loose my Command centers, extractors, etc? ETC - just want to make sure I should keep putting money into that part of my business now ;-)

I think nobody knows those details yet... but if it does have that kind of effect, a stockpile isn't likely to be a bad thing to have.

Why Dust? Because it is what will settle down on unsold game packages in stores. No sane dude will play FPS on fcking consoles.

Currently FPS are much more successful on consoles than they are on PCs. --- I don't know! I don't know why I did it, I don't know why I enjoyed it, and I don't know why I'll do it again! Bart Simpson. |

Why Dust? Well I'm personaly sick to death with all the other FPSs running round the place I recall playing Call of Duty 1 on the PC going online thinking this is well cool now we are about to get modern warfare 3...... despite new eye candy and a XP rank system.. Nothings different and in essence after playing the campaing and have a few rounds online, I generaly put the game down. No longer any need to play it.
But with Dust, well now I have a reason to play it, if it does infact impact New Eden im very keen to play this game and actualy do somthing. well excited just hope that the Sony Network comes back online and stays that way when the game launches

I don't know about your country, but the Playstation Network is back up in Australia. The Store even came back online a couple of days ago - I got Little Big Planet and Dead Nation for my free games. :)
I doubt it will go down like that again. There's a reason it was down so long - I gather they basically rebuilt it from the ground up.
Dust is going to be so cool. I too get bored after a few rounds of the others - it's just so samey and repetitive.
In Dust we'll have actual, real objectives. I am seriously looking forward to it SO HARD now.

Maybe in future. When Dusters will be able to capture stations or POSes..... Then yes.
But now i know only about planets. And what do we have on planets? Yea. PI. Which cost few millions to build from zero, takes 1 minute to remove and few minutes to build in new place. I think CCP needs to make alot of changes to Eve for battles in Dust have some kind on influence to Eve university..... Before it Dust is not more than new FPS without any story and experience which leads to lags, problems, inbalance.....
