Edited by: Commander IceQ on 10/06/2011 10:33:31 Edited by: Commander IceQ on 10/06/2011 10:23:26 Hi All.
I remember when I started, I heard that Gallente had drone boats. I rushed to the ships section in EVEMon and went through their ships. Yes their ships have drone bonuses, but still only 5 drones.
When I hear "drone boats" I get this picture in my head of a ship surrounded by hundreds of the little buggers.
Of course it won't be practical in EVE to have hundreds, but how about "mini carriers"? Maybe like 15 total.
Before the flaming starts I am not saying the ship should launch 15 heavy drones and then do full damage (that would just be too op).
I was thinking of a ship bonus like a Carrier; "Carrier Skill Bonus: Can deploy 1 additional Fighter or Drone per level..."
Changed to; Drone Ship: "**** Skill Bonus: Can deploy 2 additional Light Drones or 1 additional Medium Drone per level..."
(**** can be Frigate, Cruiser, Battleship, etc. depending on the hull. See examples below)
So on "ship skill" 5 You can have 15 Light or 10 Medium or 5 Heavy drones launched. Don't even have to change the drone bandwidth if it is set at 125.
Light : 15 x 5 = 75 Medium : 10 x 10 = 100 Heavy : 5 x 25 = 125
Next will be the "even 15 drones are op" flamers. Here are the base damage calculations; Light: Dmg: 15 hp 5 x 15 = 75 hp 15 x 15 = 225 hp
Medium: Dmg: 24 hp 5 x 24 = 120 hp 10 x 24 = 240 hp
Heavy: Dmg: 48 hp 5 x 48 = 240 hp
So as you can see the 10 med and 5 heavies to the same damage and 15 lights are less. For those that think "they do the same or less damage than 5 heavies then... why bother?", my answer to that is; increase the light and med so they are slightly stronger at 10-15 levels. (obviously CCP will balance them out)
And now for the "we don't need more ships" crowd. Your right we don't. Take one or some of the existing "drone boats" and add the above mentioned bonus to them. (The below ships are just examples) Battle Ships: Dominix "Gallente Battleship Skill Bonus: Can deploy 2 additional Light Drones or 1 additional Medium Drone per level..." Sin (T2) "Gallente Battleship Skill Bonus: Can deploy 2 additional Light Drones or 1 additional Medium Drone per level..."
Cruisers: Vexor "Gallente Cruiser Skill Bonus: Can deploy 2 additional Light Drones or 1 additional Medium Drone per level..." Ishtar (T2) "Gallente Cruiser Skill Bonus: Can deploy 2 additional Light Drones or 1 additional Medium Drone per level..."
Frigates: Ishkur (T2) "Gallente Frigate Skill Bonus: Can deploy 1 additional Light Drone per level..."
The amount and type of drones can be changed per ship class, but the above should give you a general idea.
Yes, I suppose the amount of drones will probably add some more to the lag in large fleet battles, but I don't think it will be THAT much more.
All I can think of right now.
Flame on!
Edit: Missed a typo >_< Edit: Oh Yeah, forgot to mention that the above bonuses apply to Combat drones only. My Signature is too large... O_o |

This is actually how drones used to work. Drone Interfacing was +1 drone and the drone based ships got to launch more based on the hull skill. The problem was people would launch drones just to cause extra lag so it was changed to the current system where skills give more damage.

Aahh Ok. I started in the expansion they released the "premium" graphics, so I wasn't aware of that detail.
Surely with the advances in the net and hardware, this should not be such a big issue any more. Considering what the new turrets will add in Incarna. Carriers can have 10 max, and Super Carriers can have 20 max. Add 200 ships launching 5 drones each (adding 1000), and you already have quite a lot of data flowing around.
Oh well, was just an idea. My Signature is too large... O_o |

Yeep pretty much nailed the problem with the OP. The issue isn't that you have to work hard to convince other players that it can work, since many of us played the game when we had drone swarms. The issue is that you have to convince CCP that having that drone swarm is somehow much better than just having a damage bonuses to the drones and that benefit is worth the increase in lag.

I would be happy if CCP added a high slow item that lets you add one additional drone to ships like the Dominix. Also, T2 drone upgrades would be nice

I am glad they removed the drone swarm. I like the changes they made to increase damage and reduce numbers. I want skills to improve sentry tracking and the strength of EW drones.

Almost agree with you Op but would rather see those drone boats take real sense of drone boats.
Sub cap drone boats: -deploy 12 light or 9 meds or 7 heavy (or 6 sentry) -unable to fit weapons -bonus remote reps/energy transfer to range and cap consuming (not amount, would be silly) -bonus to neutralisers: range and cap consuming -negate the possibility to fit other tank than racial one by giving tank bonus (minmatar obvilously should be shield on pair with caldari) -increase base speed but add mass (doesn't need to be agile) -bonus to hit points dmg rep AND WF abilities of drones
Just an opinion.

That'd make them underpowered, very underpowered. If a ship carrying only drones loses all its drones, it becomes incapable of fighting. You wouldn't support adding the ability to destroy the turrets on other ships, would you?
Anyway. I support the original idea, on the condition that a) it is tested for lag before implementation b) if it is abused or unbalanced, it gets removed.

drone swarms still exist. haven't you been in a fight with 10 carrierrs/super carriers and 500 ships?
