so people blob. then people complain that they blob because they want to win.
well duh, if you're in a fair fight, somebody ****ed up terribly that's for sure. And because of this blobs happen.
we bring MOAR they bring MOAR and we bring EVEN MOAR! and they bring EVEN MOAR! and the hamsters have a heart attack. and everybody loses the game.
and then people complain about fixing it and boohoo and **** and giggles and that the other side was unfair and wanted to crash the server.

Edited by: Jacque Cruix on 12/06/2011 20:07:33 Blobs are simply a concentration of force. Those who bring the most combat power wins.
Edit: One issue I do see is that IRL it is normally safer for an Army to be dispersed but less effective. But in Eve it is safer to be blob'd up and more effective.
So IRL you have to choose between safety or effectiveness. In Eve you just choose to stay blob'd up and have both.

Yep, there is no real penalty for bringing more ships, except for server crash, but this one is applied to both sides of conflict so can be used as advantage.
Yep, friendly fire is one of possible options.

If you want 1v1 go swap cans outside a trade hub. If you are wondering round low/null, please bring enough to deal with the locals there or lose.
If you lose please cry 'blob', this i interpret as a whine about not having any friends.

Perhaps introducing line of sight. If you are in a blob you will have to manoeuvre into a position where there are no friendly ships/objectsbetween you and the target or you will strike that instead.
I know this would have a lot of issues, specially in empire but it would make blobs harder to wield.

CCP has said that line of sight calculations would kill the hamsters. We would be right back to 100 ship fleets lagging the game to unplayability. Not sure how much it would help in any case, there is alot of space in space, relatively easy to spread out a bit.
Limiting system ship count to 100 would mean an alliance could become impregnable by keeping 100 ships in system. If you said, "well 100 ships per alliance" then alliance leaders would make alts to run secondary alliances so they could blob up using multiple alliances, all under the control of one player.
AoE weapons: Unless its like the old Doomsday, getting everything on the grid, the current blobs will just spread out and become sniper blobs, with one AoE on the gate to clear out the new arrivals.
So far every idea Ive seen for breaking up the blob would be worked around or kill the hamsters, and there would still be blobs.

There is actually one way to harm blobs, but everything comes to a price...
Blobs could be limited by setting a "blob penalty" in which the more blues in a system, the larger the penalty to tank, gank or both to each blue; the penalty would be alike the "Incursion penalty", a global effect triggered by how many blues are in system. The price, of course, would be realism: Why should a blob be penalyzed by being many, to start with?
Finely tuned, this penalty system would limit how much tank/gank could a commander field proficently, and would allow a smaller, better commanded and less penalyzed fleet to effectively fight a larger but more penalyzed and/or worse commanded fleet.
Not realistic, but very effective.

Also easy to get around. Friendly alliances send in multiple fleets after doing a temporary reset. Then the blob equation would change from n+1>n to Y+1x100n>Yx100n

I forgot to mention that the penalty would be dynamically calculated and would be smaller as the blob numbers shrinked... precisely to avoid a "start small, then call reinforcements" getaround. No. The more you are at any time, the more penalty and vice versa if you're taking losses and shrinking numbers. Ideally that should work so each fleet had a relatively constant gank/tank until one used them better and overcame whatever numbers/penalty had the other.
