You guy's did a good job by Detecting the attack, and then shutting off the network access etc :)
So yeah good job all in all!
No risk of the "attacker" getting any info if they can't access the network :P

Shutting down the legit traffic will have allowed CCP to quickly identify hosts sending DDOS traffic, with minimal noise from real players. Many sites try to cope, but that action shows somebody at CCP really knows their stuff security wise.
Once you've identified the DDOS sources you can null-route them up-stream.

Isn't it funny that you have to say (not sarcastic) when congratulating CCP on their forums.

Although I was ****ed off not to be able to play I would infinitely prefer 6 hours with the servers offline, than CCP try to leave the servers up while fighting the DDoS attack only to find that someone has used it as a cover to hack the servers completely and steal our logins/credit card details.
CCP did exactly the right thing to disconnect from the rest of the internet as soon as they detected they were under attack.

Have to agree here, the response was exactly what it should have been for a DDOS attack. Security is better than a risk simply because we want to play.

One day will people will realise that they as individuals aren't everything, and that no, the rest of the world doesn't really care about their individual issues/oppinions, and that their 10.4 English Pennies or their 0.17 USD really don't actually have that much of a financial impact on their wallet to warrant moaning, resulting in CCP propbably going "Lulz***" back at you, and promptly telling them to get a life. <3

It seems there are dip****s that have no idea how much of a goddamn task it is getting a huge cluster like Eve back online after a total outage.
I'd be surprised if there weren't more reboots necessary. ------------------ Find Roid, Examine, and Excavate Explorer |

I've been working in it/itc sec for about 12 yrs now.
a ddos attack is fully successful if you're forced to bring servers down. Per se, it doesnt aim to credit card theft/fraud or malicious intrusion but, as acronym suggests, to denial of service, from distributed (more or less conscious) clients.
That being said, it could serve as distraction to other, more intrusive, parallel activity. It is weird though, because a ddos is very noisy and easily identifiable. I wouldnt do it, aiming for CCs I'd try sneak silently, trying not to raise any concern til I'm done.
Ccp looks to me as a highly professional and motivated company, no doubt in my mind they acting efficiently and they probably had their reasons to shut down.
Keep up the good work. |

Thanks CCP. Handling this the way all companies should. Telling us as soon as you know is admirable. Other companies should model your efforts in protecting our personal information.
Looking forward to getting back into the game, knowing how safe my info is :)

I wasn't online during this situation but I love the response letter you guys put out. Explaining the situation and your response to the situation was more than most companies would do. This was not your fault and I think you handled the situation brilliantly.
[Tinfoil hat] With all the hacktivism talk running rampant on the internet, I can't help but try to connect this situation with similar situations. I love CCP as a company and anyone, or any group, making these attacks are not hurting CCP, they're hurting the people they say they support. [/Tinfoil hat] |

Edited by: Rasz Lin on 15/06/2011 00:20:04 all those +1 derp posts remind me of posts on PSN portal after the Sony hack, there were hundreds of "congratulation, good job" posts made WHILE the service was offline and NO HUMAN could log into PSN to post :)
while you are at it please congratulate CCP on choosing the best server technology they could - M$. Remember how CCP was proud M$ finally fixed a bug in M$ SQL ... after a year from submiting a report? Something about that bug making the database server not start up and go into loop, not surprisingly this is whats happening right now, server counted down from 200 seconds and went into 5 second startup loop
edit: it finally gave up starting up. Guess this will be a world of tanks night :( |

Just started trying this game out again last night.
1. Had some trouble reactivating account. Immediate and flawless response from the support team. Nice Job.
2. DDOS on Eve today. CCP decides to pull the plug and let everyone know whats happening. Perfect response to an imperfect situation. Props.
Now look at Lulzsec, all back-o-da-bus n ****.
I'm sure a couple of them probably will look across this thread. You guys are smart enough to pull some major cyber attacks off. But you are too naive to realize that the MIBs will find you, and there will be no lulz when you are in a dark cell with no press coverage. Attacking government sites? That's either someone working for government or someone that should be looking over their shoulder... a lot. That's lulz. |
