online game addiction Note the image selected from one of these mind warping games and then note the complete lack of a single confession from an eve online junky (mostly everquest fans). Mind you in the case of the younger addicts its up to the parents to take note of the excessive game playing and consumption of sunny D and suchlike kiddie ***** equivalents in the first place.

That's because we're all to busy playing the game or posting here to be bothered with online surveys

In a wierd way the article reminds me about an old case about how evil pen and paper RPG's are a while back.
A kid did comit suicide and it was blamed on him playing RPG's... the fact that his homelife was a nightmare with abusive alcoholic parents aparently had nothing to do with it.
Sure some people get into problems with faced with things like an MMO, they are very addictive and thus I would love to have a No-Life rating when I log in (ie an indication of how much of the last week you have spent online) but apart from that its a thing for the person playing and his parents and friends.

Ah... looks like they've moved on from traditional roleplaying games and started targetting MMORGS, have they?
I still remember when a friend's family suffered from a suspected "ghost" - the investigation lasted just long enough for the investigator to learn about my friend's roleplaying hobby... :o/
It's just people trying to blame something other than themselves and society for their angst and problems. Pitiful, IMO.

There are adult EVE addicts. I came across a disturbing comment on a set of forums. Would post it if I thought it would help but I have a feeling it'll have the opposite affect. Hope the guy recognises it as an issue and takes a step back.
LOL I've been logged in evey week day for 3 weeks, but yet again I'm semi-afk studying.

While i agree that people can easily fall into an addiction with an online game they like, i woudnt blame the online game itself for it. Instead you could blame real life for forcing you into a game addiction cause it is so awful boring most of the time. Imho the most addictive aspect of mmorpgs is that (aside from killing awful osters/nasty space pirates) you have just a lot mor freedom in your actions. You are only bound to the game rules, and not to laws. And whatever action you take in a game, its unlikely that it has any influx on the outside world (in any serious matter)
In the end your life is yours to live anyway, so should anyone decide he wants to be totally obsessed with a game, well i can think of a lot more dumber ways to get through the day...

The sad thing, as already mentioned, is that although online games might be the proverbial knife in the suicidal kid's hand, it's a lot more complex than that.
Before computer games, Role Playing Games made kids suicide. Before RPG, it was the TV. Before that, it was something else. Radio, probably, and before that, kids didn't commit suicide, because they usually died from the strain of working 18 hour a day in a coal mine.
It does get better, though. Some people are simply unstable, put too much into something, and it turns sour. Let's take a typical potential suicidal kid. He can either obsess with soccer, and become a hooligan (and/or commit suicide when his team loses an important match), he can play monopoly and jump out a window after losing, he can play role playing games and worship satan (and commit ritual suicide), or play online games and subsequently commit suicide.
The thing it all has in common is the simple thing that the person in question is, imo, 'looking' for something to get an unhealthy obsession with. And whenever that one thing that keeps him vaguely in line with reality lets him down...Pop.
My apologies if this offends anyone, or it touches into someone having experienced a near one commit suicide, but hand on the heart here: Games don't make kids kill themselves. An unbearable life makes them kill themselves.
But then again, what would I know, given that I both play computer games and role playing games, eh?

Suicidal people tend to see the world in black and white. Any bad luck can set them off, be it sports, friends or a game.

the important thing is balance, too much of anything is bad. Like how I am spending time trolling these forums rather than writing the essay I have due in for monday :(. I think if you get to the point where you are an alt of your character, you need to stop and look outside occasionally, maybe even spend a week away climbing/hiking like I do. Eve is a hobby, not an obsession with me (I think)

Would have read the article but if i opened that link i'd have anotherwindow open and i wouldn't be able to see what is happening in EVE, phew crisis averted.
Games are cheaper than RL, i pay ~ú10 a month for eve. RL i gotta pay the rent, food, bills. and if i want to socialise it costs me a fortune coz those bloody women drink expensive drinks with fancy names.
/me gives [Insert name] a [insert drink/...]
that is so much cheaper and easier.

goes and sits in front of the TV instead of playing eve in my spare time
That has been my argument when my g/f tells me to get off the computer for me to watch eastenders? and for gods sake them lets act camp and paint the house up, r the countless realty TV shows with the plastic celeb's, PLEASE watching TV is more likely to drive me to suicide, but its ok to sit in front of a TV for 4 hours, a computer is just being a geek (r worse I saw a m8's computer and he was watching T.V. on it), I mean what a waste...
And yeah I have a busy r/l studying, working voluntary work etc so my eve time is important and if I never had all this stuff in my life, I would play a lot more...

to
"It is a wonderfully thought out world where you can immerse yourself in different characters and learn new skills and abilities.
It's a chance to explore other areas of your psyche as you can play male characters or female characters regardless of your sex.
My husband and I have been online RPG gaming for at least three years when we discovered Diablo and Diablo 2.
We have two computers so we can team up as a party to tackle higher-level quests and go where the wild things are."

Wtf! Guys how can you laugh at this? It's serious! If we, the 35,000 subscribers of Eve - and the millions of other people that play MMOGs and RPGs the world over - don't do something quick to become un-addicted...
