I'm relatively new to EVE (just over a month) and I've been spending most of my time running security missions and trying to get a handle on all the different things that I need to learn in this game. Today I got p0wnd, but good, and it cost me my ship and all the goodies that I had on it. I thought I'd share what happened in case some other n00b can learn from my mistake.
I was running an epic arc mission (I just discovered them). The details aren't important, but there was a doctor that was being ransomed and I needed to get her back. I was given some money and told to pay the perpetrators and return with her. Of course, I knew it wasn't going to be that easy, but my Punisher was reasonably well-outfitted and I was confident I could handle whatever rats came my way.
I warp to the location, where I immediately find the drop box. I deposit the money within and, on cue, the pirates appear and decide to eliminate me and keep the doc. A short battle ensues, after which a second wave appears. So far, everything is just I expected. But then, just as I'm finishing off the last of the second wave a player ship appears. At first I pay it no mind. I'll admit that I should have been a bit more suspicious, but I figured maybe dude was just cruising around. I wasn't too worried, as I was in 0.6 space, so any attack would provoke CONCORD.
I finished off the last of the pirates and started looking for *something* that would be holding the doctor. Well, the lad was quick, I'll give him that. By the time I had switched my overview from my "combat" tab to my "everything" tab, his entry had turned red. It took me a few moments to work out why, as there was not a shot fired, but then I realized that he had snatched up the doctor. Now I couldn't complete the mission! Since we were in 0.6 my instincts were to not shoot, so I just circled him a bit. He kited off, and I sat there trying to figure out what to do (I hadn't yet worked out that I could just go back to the agent and quit the mission). Suddenly he came back. Again I started orbiting him. By this time I had worked out that since he had stolen from me that I could attack without fearing CONCORD, so I opened fire.
This turned out to be a mistake, as he seriously outclassed me. I don't remember specifically what he was flying, but the DPS was chewing up my little frigate. Oddly, he then jettisoned the doctor, and I made a beeline to retrieve her, hoping to warp out before I was destroyed. When I later considered the timing, I have to think that he jettisoned her just before I started to fire, in order to bait me (it would have worked). I quickly opened the can, transferred the doctor, and tried to warp out. At least, I though I had, because as I continually mashed on the nearest station to warp to, it took me several seconds to realize that there was a confirmation box in the middle of the screen asking me if I really wanted to steal. Losing that ten seconds did me and my ship in.
At least I didn't get podded, and I had insurance on the ship (lost some decent gear, though). I also don't hold it against the guy. He was a jerk, yes, but I knew jerks were part of the game when I signed up. And who knows, maybe someday I'll *be* that jerk. But for now, I'm watching my meager bank account dwindle even more as I outfit another Punisher. I also have a long memory, so I'll keep an eye out for him.
Karma's a female dog, doncha know.

I think you should name and shame this individual. Picking on noobs is the practice of cowards and I and others would be interested in administering some justice to this scumbag.
Also, don't call your mods 'gear' or internet meanies will laugh at you.

That player who did this to you is most likely a member of a corp which does nothing but grief new players attempting to complete the level one epic arc.
First off, I would like to congratulate you on taking the loss in stride. Later in your EVE career you will look back on it and realize how insignificant this small set back really was. The epic arc is actually designed to kill you at one point, to get you used to the idea of losing a ship, and teach you to look for help from those you can trust.
Second, griefing is a large part of EVE. You are going to run into players like this quite often. From market scams, to merc corps, to ninja looters (not talking about the salvagers, I mean the guys who steal mission objectives), to can flippers, to suicide gankers, the best course of action is to always be thinking "what could someone do to screw me over right now, and how can I best frustrate them right back?"
That being said, there is one type of griefing which is looked down upon, and not allowed by CCP. That is intentionally greifing new players within areas created for new players. Now, whether the level one mission arcs can be considered "areas for new players" or not is a gray area, and one I do not expect CCP to definitively rule on. When the level one epic arcs were introduced, they were billed as an expansion of the tutorials and a means for new players to learn valuable lessons about EVE. At the same time, they obviously take players out side of the typical newbie systems.
IMO, those players who choose to deliberately target new players trying to complete the level one epic arcs are griefing new players. Even if the act is technically allowed by CCP, I can think of no more dishonorable thing for an EVE player to do.

Also, seconding the idea of war decing the corp responsible for this. Currently in high sec anyway pew pewing with a corp that refused to move the last of their scanner alts out of the worm hole system we took from them. Would be glad to have a few more war targets to hunt down while said corp hides in stations.

Alas, my memory is long but faulty, and I can't recall the name of the pilot or corp. I'd know it if I saw it again, though, so I'll keep an eye out.

Nice story. But sad that you lost your ship. Heres a little thing I use to do with people that Bait others...
I fly so close to the can as possible, then I open it, but I dont do anything. Then I select a destination, a station or anything really and activate the Warp, I drag the item to my cargo, but it wont load it since the messege pops up if I really want to. And I constantly watch the warp meter, and as I see the warp kicks off (the meter goes to 0 then to 100) I select "I accept", or what ever it sais, the OK button anyways. The item gets loaded in my cargo, and I escape unharmed since even if you were locked, it gets unlocked since people cant shoot warping targets.
Then you have to move around and dont get caught for 15 mins. You can as I use to, dock and wait. Its something I use to do when Im bored and see people luring poor newbs. ^^ |

Cool story bro, you'll do fine in EVE with this attitude.
For the record, the griefer who baited you to attack him is Sanadoon1 of Guy Fawkes Trust Fund (based on killboard data from battleclinic). He was flying a Merlin. Once you learn how to fly and fit your ship a bit better, you'll be able to kill Merlins with your Punisher.

What a rare treat to read a story from somebody who had something bad happened who is not trying to get free skill points or QQ about how the game is stupid.
I think the risk factor in this game is one of it's finer qualities.

A few years ago (two i think) i was mining in 0.5 with a retriever, alone. I got suicide ganked by a thrasher. I felt bad, and my play session had been ruined for the entire day because that ship had costed me dearly.
Last week i was stuck in high-sec after a JC to inject skills, 73 jumps away from my home in 0.0. I decided to buy a thrasher and, you guessed, suicide a retriever. After the first one, i decided to try another one.
By the end of the day i had killed 7 retrievers and 1 covetor. All in high-sec.

Welcome to Eve.
As mentioned before, Kudo's to taking the loss in stride instead of dramaqueening over it. This is the kind of stuff that happens in Eve. Griefers will grief, Scammers will scam, pirates will suck.
Learning how to deal with these kinds of situations is a good way to start learning how to play Eve. You'll learn how to fit your ships, how to avoid situations like that, and what to do if someone messes with you.
Oh, and for the person that mentions the exploding ship mission.. it is one of the tutorial missions, not the Epic arc which he is on. He's finished the baby missions, and doing the epic arc, which basicly is the first 'real' big mission thing for newbies.
Oh, and I recommend not quitting epic arc missions, you will not be able to restart them and need to complete them, to get the next one in the line. ( which is worth it for a newbie, the whole line is worth about 25M in rewards, and a good standing boost ) Just go do something else for a while, and wait for DT to reset your mission, you won't get the extra time bonus money, but you'll be able to complete your mission. If that doesn't work, either check in contracts to get the item you need, or file a petition and ask CCP to reset the mission for you.
Eve is a Harsh mistress when it comes to learning, but the experience is enough for a lifetime.

Welcome to EvE
Speak to people in the corp you are in, even if you are in one of the beginner corps, and ask them for help and advice. If you aren't getting help and advice there are plenty of people out there who can help, just if they want any money from you or want you to open trade windows with them tell them where to go.
First off: You are using shield modules on a ship designed to be something that reinforces armor. Ask them about what you need for armor tanking. Ask them also about training for using tech 2 modules as they are much better than the ones you are using, save for the afterburner. You will start needing them as you move into cruisers and battlecruisers.
For PvE I recommend an armor repairer and as many armor hardeners as you can fit, plus cap rechargers in the mid slots to keep that repper going. You can also add rigs but I wouldn't worry about them until you know more. When I was you, rigs were unaffordable so I didn't use them until the patch came along making them cheaper for small ships to use them.
I would also recommend not using Amarr for PvE. They are excellent for PvP but you can only do one damage type with your main guns. Different PvE enemies (aka rats) are weaker to some damate types depending on what they are so you need to be able to shoot all types of damage depending on what you are facing. Caldari missiles, Minmatar autocannons/arties and Gallente drones all do selectable damage types and for PvE. If you want to fly them, you don't need to make a new character, you just buy the skill books for the ships and start training them. You will end up flying everything anyway in time so don't worry about flying more than one race's ships now. Training multiple race ships will enable you to fly pirate ships later. They are fun :)
Don't bother with destroyers for ratting and missioning: it can be done but cruisers are much much better. Only use dessies if you are still on a trial account and can't use cruisers yet. Dessies however are excellent for PvP when in large groups ;)
Speak to people like Eve University, and consider trying some PvP even if that is not what you want out of the game. PvP can teach you a lot about flying your ship that you wouldn't otherwise realise.
Don't let people like this get on your nerves. Lets put it this way: My clone, without implants, costs more than your ship did. In time you will also see how little you lost.
Fly Safe.
