I see a lot of people who are acting as if they care that someone they did not know *at all* died. I'm sure many of you heard of him, less of you may have been on mumble with him or jabber. Very few of you may have met him once at a gathering.
How is his death any more tragic or more significant than anyone else who dies? And everyone dies. The only importance I can gleam of this is that his name was Vile Rat, and it was on the news. I'm sure many people who don't play EVE and aren't as sanctimonious as you thought "well I'm glad HE died, actually"
Is this just because it was on the news and you guys feel some how more important or relevant because of that?
I know for an absolute certainty that, that is indeed why. |

This is a sensitive issue and as a community, it is nice to unite and show support in a time of tragedy - any decent human being would do the same, whether you know the person or not.
By posting this it is clear you do not share these thoughts or have any care for EVE or its community. I would refrain on airing your thoughts as it will indeed upset others.

No need to be so harsh. We're talking about people posting their condolences and regardless of their motivation there is no need for being sanctimonious yourself. I found a dead cat on the side of the road so I -átook it home and put some honey on it and cooked it and then I ate it. Is that bad? do do do dooo... GÖ¬ GÖ½

If you actually mean these terrible things at least post on your main. It's a massive loss for his friends, family and his internet spaceship friends. Maybe if I keep talking it'll look like I know what I'm doing... |

Well done Sherlock.
You are the scum of the earth posting this crap. Hiding behind an alt too. I hope CCP looks at your IP address and ban your accounts. You have no place here. |

Taken from the fake tear thread.
NetheranE wrote:I actually broke out in full fledged tears at the story behind this man and his horrific fate. May God have mercy on your soul Sean, and may He bring peace to the family you left behind. I never met the man, nor his avatar. No matter, I wish to have met him like none other now. He broke out in tears. Really. Did he? That's quaint. Does anyone else see what's disgusting about posts like these?

I don't like to lock threads, because usually I can see some merit in them, in that they often spur a conversation - even if it's one the original poster didn't anticipate.
In this case though, I think the opening poster should have been able to anticipate the future for this thread, and that it really doesn't have one.

Trolling is the word used to describe a post that is deliberately designed for the purpose of angering and insulting the players. Posts of this nature are disruptive and do not contribute to the sense of community we want for our forums.

DISCLAIMER: I am posting this as an individual, not as an employee of CCP. None of what I say here can be taken as any stance of CCP. This is simply e, as a person, responding to something that I feel needs a response.
RANT Why does VR's death mean more to me than all the other anonymous deaths in the world? Simple, I knew the guy. Was his life worth more than any other? In my opinion everyone is equal in that sense, but that is not the point. His death means more to me because I spoke to him, I met him and I worked with him. He had an influence in my life. That means his passing away also has an influence in my life, and to discount that would be an injustice.
Now, my emotional connection to him is not as strong s those of my family and friends, but there is definitely an emotional connection between me and those people who cared deeply for him. That matters, that matters a whole damn lot. There is also a sense of loss within a community whenever a tragedy like this happens. That matters a whole damn lot too. When my friends suffer, I suffer. When my community suffers, I suffer. This is called empathy. That is what makes us humans; in fact, that is what makes us moral and makes us function in times of need and crisis. That is what makes us do the right thing and makes us feel bad or hurt or happy when we need to feel. In the end it is important that we express that sense of empathy as that is the one thing that makes us come together and allows us to support those in need and it is what allows us to become better people and grow as a community.
The people posting their condolences aren't acting because the media is paying attention; to suggest that is a gross affront to the good intentions of those offering their sympathies and to the tragedy that affected all of us, but especially those close to him. These people, all good members of a community, that express their sympathy do so because they empathize with the loved ones left behind and they feel it is their duty to support those loved ones in their time of grief. They grief with them because they have the decency to share some of their pain. I grief with them and I think it is a privilege to be included in that and it is my duty to take their loss both seriously and personal.
So show some bloody respect. /RANT Senior GM Homonoia | Info Group | Senior Game Master |

To add to GM Homonoia's post, who incidentally I agree with completely, I'll say one thing :
If any more of these threads crop up, those who're posting and being disrespectful in ANY context regarding ANY player who has lost their life will be dealt with using a zero tolerance approach.
This type of behavior is detrimental to the community as a whole and will not be tolerated.
