Why, because you cant see what you know you fitted to the ship, or the verbiage when you hover over it is too hard to read?

the old turret icons did look better imo, but i guess it doesnt really matter, the preview is cool tho

Yes actually it is a fail...one way to solve this without having to redesign new ones, is just bring back the old ones, until you have someone capable of creating 2D icons representative of the new turrets. something that remains in line with ALL the other icon items of the game...
For those who cant understand this, just take a quick look at this that someone posted...

you dont even have to read through it, just look at the pictures, they illustrate pretty well where did CCP failed so hard on this one.

I always found the old ones too cartoon-y. The new ones don't really bother me because you can't see them when you've go them bombed up anyway.

OP, I don't see YOU out there actually making an mmo with a player base of over half a million. Not to criticize or discredit, but come on. Cut the guys some slack.
In any case. I happen to like the new symbols. As it's been said - the previous icons were too cartoon-y to me. I remember when I first started playing the game, it sorta put me off. (this is an armor repper? WTH?? and they all look the same? And how am I supposed to distinguish between different guns of the same size??) that simplicity actually confused me.
That being said, IMHO, I do think they could tone it down a little bit. Or better yet give more contrast in color. And, put like a while border or something around the icons so you can see then in space.
