Edited by: Harune Sasen on 23/06/2011 19:57:46 CCP has been monopolizing space sim for a long time, but there has been alternatives in development for a some time now, one of such games is Inifity universe;

Thanks for the link, am looking for another space game as well. Now that CCP starts to treat their mostly adult customer base in the same way as Blizzard does their kiddie fanbase, namely cattle... it is time to count our blessings.

I hope that the old saying of -where there is chaos, there is opportunity- holds true.
Some savvy investor or MMO producer aware of the EVE plight is sure to cash in on it if done correctly. Lot's of unhappy players right now.

I had not heard about this, but it looks really good. Seems like they are going for EVE based on twitch. Not sure how good it will be, but I will keep my eyes and mind open to what they are going to offer.
If nothing else it will give EVE/CCP some competition to think about vs forcing pod pilots to exit their ship into a storefront.

The mechanics are a little different, but I think Vendetta Online also seems like worth a shot and it has a native Linux client as well, so thumbs up for that. I'm giving it a shot here, I may post a review later.
There is also Free Allegiance, also with slightly different dynamic, and I believe it is free to play.
I'll edit this post if if come upon any others.

Sorry, Sambal, I think we've been reading different forums the last few days.
You see. If you read the EVE forums, you'd quickly realize that any adults that may have played EVE left a long time ago.

Edited by: Salomei on 23/06/2011 20:15:25 Sounds a lot like the MMO version of Elite/Frontier/FE that I was looking for when I found EVE. I worry about the Newtonian physics, though. In FFE, it was super easy to let your acceleration get the best of you and then you lost who you were fighting and hurtled off into a rock or something.
Edit: Based on some reading and a look at the visitor polls, though, it's likely to be a WoW-ish carebear playground, despite the potential.

Which is a mix of FPS and RTS, and yes its free to play. Pretty much twitch-based combat system, and game balance is non-existant imo.
Fun space shooter nonetheless with quite a bit of strategy elements, if you can look beyond the absolutely terrible graphics (read: they werent even good for 2002 standards).

LOL
Infinity is vaporware of the worst kind. There has been zero development and news on that since he released the ICP what.. 4 years ago? Now he's shifted focus on developing the game to developing the engine so he can sell it.
Infinity will most likely never release, though a major studio may pick up the engine and do something cool with it.
All the other games mentioned suck.
Earth and Beyond is cool, and free
enb-emulator.com .. still in stress beta however so it's buggy.

I wouldn't write off Infinity just yet. They've set up the company to market the engine, and then are going to build the game around it. I've been keeping my eye on it for over a year now, and while it'll be a few more years until a game is made, I think that they are making clear progress. Just the fact they they now exist as a company shows how far they have come.

Nevermind....after a closer look. This looks like exactly the type of game I didn't want eve to turn into.

Its community run, from where Microsoft left it back in 02. It is regularly updated by people who devote their free time to it. But its a match based FPS game where you start out in teams with a FC who choses what tech to research and the object is destroy all the bases of the other team.

Blanket statement, and I disagree, I just downloaded Vendetta Online (not a huge download BTW) and went through a couple of their tutorials, and it does look very interesting, different from EvE in a lot of ways, but interesting nonetheless. Too early to really tell if it is something I would get into fully (certainly worth dropping an ALT account and getting a VO one), but I think I will delve a little deeper into it, and see if it is indeed a worthwhile change. Considering the state of things on EvE, it will be a welcomed change.

Very similar to Eve but with mechs/robots. It is a new game/Indie developer so it does have some improvements that are needed. It does however have a lot of potential.

Sorry but all these games look like total **** compared to EVE, I'm peaved off over this latest expansion as much as you guys but honestly EVE is still the best Fi-Sci MMO out there.
And just so you know, "Free to play" only means it has more crappy micro-transactions than EVE has, in fact you absolutely can not go far in a free to play game without spending $$$.
Some of these games uggested are RTS games not MMOs, and no one dare suggest Star Trek online.

Eve looks good, granted. But, looks > content for the last 3 "game updates". I'd rather have content, and a non-broken game.

I disagree, granted I just downloaded it myself but there look to be '0' micro transactions in Vendetta Online, and I would certainly not qualify it as an RTS, it just does not fit that model.
Will you need to get an ALT account or something similar in VO, that could be the case (have not played enough of it yet really), but it isn't like I don't do that already here.
Your statement that "the games look like total s*h*i*t compared to EvE" maybe an accurate one (from initial introspection), but at least in my case I am not exactly shooting for looks. I like to look at the overall package before I make such a decision.
So since you have made an all encompassing statement such as this, it is my assumption you have downloaded every game on this list and have already tried it? If this is the case why not give us an actual review of the game?
