So, I currently have an extensive PI operation I have my boot on, at this moment, 27 planets between various characters. The average cost (in terms of infrastructure) of each of these operations is about 6 million ISK.
My point is, when DUST 514 comes out and someone 'attacks' me, why should I care? I only have a 6 million ISK investment, I will simply leave and go to the next planet. I don't get it, why would I buy all kinds of vehicles and hire lil Playstation 'gamers' to fight when it would be much cheaper to just leave and set up shop elsewhere?
Has anyone else thought of this? Has CCP?

That's a valid point, but I think it may be more of an "inconvenience" thing. I currently have 15 planets and definitely would not like to have to reconstruct the infrastructure somewhere else...it just takes too much time sometimes. It's probably less about the cost.

For people doing P1/P2 I agree. People doing P3/P4 probably have more goods/ISK tied up in the production chain.

P4 i can see, especially in 0.0 where it is directly useful, but P3 is still cheap to replace. I mean I produce enough Robotics daily to replace a couple planets easily. But, I know of only a few people personally that deal with P4, I find P2 or P3 far more profitable.

Effort.
Also, if you get people to contest it, you've got a market for MORE goods, and can probably recoup most if not all your costs by selling them the **** they need TO contest it, on-site, at a markup. And make them buy it by selling to the guys attacking you, under an alt.

Edited by: Maplestone on 24/06/2011 15:25:23 I would not be surprised to see another layer of sovereignty-related PI structures as DUST approaches and that those will be the target rather than the harvesters and refineries we have today (but that's mostly just my speculation).
If it's just a pure cost-benefit, then as a PI manager, I will be trying to make my colony as boring a place to attack as possible for DUST players. The more exciting I make it, the more resources I will end up spending to defend it. One aspect of that may simply to offer no defence (or a very erratic swing back and forth between massive defence and no defence) so there's are no good fights to be had.

If people start attacking my PI, I would not set it up again, the profits are not worth setting the stuff up over and over, and paying others to protect it.
Right now POS fuel is very high, and letting people attack our PI planets will raise it even more so. Peopel are already taking down towers and letting them going offline, Jita market is flooded with towers/modules.

Aren't product costs being too high vs profits being too low simply the two stresses at either end of a normal, healthy supply-and-demand curve?

Seriously??? Maybe compared to pre-PI prices but compared to 7 months ago the fuel is dirt cheap.
Personally I do hope DUST causes PI values to climb.

I think a lot of people will enjoy burning your farms, blowing up your factories and killing your peasants regardless of whether it's an economic problem for you.

The obvious solution would be for CCP to raise the economic incentive for people to continue establishing their PI stuff (maybe as a semi-replacement for moon goo gold in 0.0) and as someone else mention add another layer of sovereignty that is tied to PI.

DUST 514 players will probably be paid to nuke capitals attacking an IHUB.

Scale -
While you maybe have a small operation, others out there have invested heavily in PI.
I have 15, characters, doing PI. All max skills, that's 90 planes worth of infrastructure. While the "chances" are I'm not going to get hit on all of them, all at once, you can bet that with any significant attack on a portion of my stuff, I am going to be looking for my own merc defense force to counter it.

Oh man, I hadn't heard about this. PI used to be a nice income, then it went way down. Now I have to defend it? Well, I hope we have a way to fight back. If we nuke their planet do they all die? Or are they immortal too?
