If the amount of subscribers sank drastically and they no longer had an incentive for continuing development/maintenance, of course. But despite my pessimism, I think it's a bit early to be worrying about this just yet.

They aren't interested in pulling the plug. They are interesting in combining a subscription based model and ramming in FTP macrotransactions to milk the player for everything they possibly can in order to finance their two failed console projects.
I mean what publisher wouldn't pay millions to an untested FPS developer to make Dust or entrust millions to CCP for some ****ty Twilight MMO. Those are bound to be popular right?
