We live in interesting times; in fact CCP is the kind of company that if things get repetitive we instinctively crank it up a notch. That, we certainly have done this week. First of we have Incarna, an amazing technological and artistic achievement. A vision from years ago realized to a point that no one could have imaged but a few months ago. It rolls out without a hitch, is in some cases faster than what we had before, this is the pinnacle of professional achievement. For all the noise in the channel we should all stand proud, years from now this is what people will remember.
But we have done more, not only have we redefined the production quality one can apply to virtual worlds with the beautiful Incarna but we have also defined what it really means to make virtual reality more meaningful than real life when it comes to launching our new virtual goods currency, Aurum.
Naturally, we have caught the attention of the world. Only a few weeks ago we revealed more information about DUST 514 and now we have done it again by committing to our core purpose as a company by redefining assumptions. After 40 hours we have already sold 52 monocles, generating more revenue than any of the other items in the store.
This we have done after months of research by a group of highly competent professionals, soliciting input and perspective from thought leaders and experts in and around our industry. We have communicated our intention here internally in very wide circles through the Virtual Economy Summit presentation at the GSM, our Fearless newsletter, sprint reviews, email lists and multiple other channels. This should not come as a surprise to anyone.
Currently we are seeing _very predictable feedback_ on what we are doing. Having the perspective of having done this for a decade, I can tell you that this is one of the moments where we look at what our players do and less of what they say. Innovation takes time to set in and the predictable reaction is always to resist change.
We went out with a decisive strategy on pricing and we will stay the course and not flip flop around or knee jerk react to the predictable. That is not saying nothing will change, on the contrary, in fact we know that success in this space is through learning and adapting to _what is actually happening_ and new knowledge gained in addition to what we knew before and expected.
All that said, I couldnGÇÖt be prouder of what we have accomplished as a company, changing the world is hard and we are doing it as so many times before! Stay the course, we have done this many times before.

so...
how many folks bought those monocles?
How many were installed and how many are being held on to by speculators who think you might take them off the market completely, making them rare items, and making them priceless?
And 52/250,000 = what percent of happy customers?
how many folks have posted in defiance of your changes?
90% of folks that are pizsed at a biz don't complain, they just don't come back.

The really sad irony is that if they'd sold that monocle for 5 dollars they'd probably have made ten times as much. _____ This is one of the moments where we look at what CCP does and less of what they say. Innovation takes time to set in and the predictable reaction is always to resist change. |

I'd guess half are CCP people or their friends.
52 x $70 = $3640
That's about 242 people for one month at $15/mo. Far more (almost 850 accounts) have canceled, and those are just the ones that have been recorded.
Hope it was worth it.

soooo they sold 52 monocles which equals approx $3120 in one time revenue (52 X $60 each)... book the cruise CCP your making it rich now.
EXCEPT there is another thread on the eve forums here which is tallying a running list of people who are fed up and are unsubscribing to eve. here is a quote from that thread - "tally so far : 359 people cancelling or not renewing a total of 834 accounts."
so that's a loss of approximately $12,510 a MONTH in reoccurring losses. (834 X $15 monthly fee)
so far Incarna has resulted in a first month profit of -$9390 (-$12,510 + $3120)
sounds like someone at CCP needs to go back to school for some accounting lessons.

I've done the math - they don't. Not by a long shot.
Based on the cancellation thread, about 850 accounts have been shut down. Assuming that they go dark by August, CCP will have sacrificed $63750 from August to December in exchange for $3640 in monocles in July.

Winning strategy if I do say so myself. Maybe Iceland can squeeze a few ISKs together for a bail out.

Keep in mind that the cancellation thread has only been half tallied and not everyone will post there. I'm sure the actual cancellation numbers are 3x that, at least.

You are likely correct.
Its not the point to sell lots of them to everybody, but a select few to a select few. Their line of thinking is that is a luxury good, and you will derive pleasure from owning it sheerly due to its cost.
They are convinced in their research that paying more will connect you to the goods you have. ...Then when you stopped to think about it. All you really said was Lalala. |

Why are people getting upset that CCP is trying to make more money from OPTIONAL stuff? Is it a crime now that they are trying to make more money? No one is forcing you to buy the vanity items. Other MMOs also sell overpriced vanity items. Of course I would never buy something like that, because it is a waste of money.

Quote: This we have done after months of research by a group of highly competent professionals, soliciting input and perspective from thought leaders and experts in and around our industry
Because paying people for months to ask around experts in the industry is a more reliable method of identifying customer wishes than just reading your own damn forums.
Once CCP was a company that cared about the player needs and wants. Now detached 'experts' are called upon to tell CCP what to do and PR spin trying to delude us into thinking the piece of **** is worth buying that silver spoon to eat it up with.
You can only attract idiots with this kind of marketing and the really big corps like blizzard already have quite the monopoly on them and are not going to share. You once made a game for the smart gamer but now you are doing your best to alienate all of them.
And without those loyal players, there will be no one there to support you should some big rival decide to crush you. You're not the top dog you think you are. You are making yourself just weaker by pretending to be one.
Bye EVE, bye CCP. There is just nothing left any more worth caring about. --------
