Travel is mega boring. PvE is mega boring.
PvP is pretty good but there's a severe shortage of targets.

If there were some form of AP, it wouldn't be nearly as bad. However, last time I was on there was the travel issue and the whole laggy as **** issue. Then again, I didn't even finish my 45 days out on my 2 accounts. I lost interest in it completely by about 20-25 days. Oh noez! /o\ |

Travel is boring? Maybe you have jump bridges wherever you're at, idk... but travel is ****-off boring in EVE as well, especially in empire.
PvE in EVE is and always was mega-boring, if not a little profitable.
there's a shortage of targets in EVE too, lowsec is dead and fleetfights get blueballed or blobbed.
So really, I don't see a difference beyond having gone to their forums, read threads, and seen devs actually responding, taking player feedback, and, well... i'm doing that client download now and I already have a trial.

Flawed or not - I'm downloading it now too. I've been 100% behind CCP for years, and about as big an Eve fanboi as it is possible to get without getting Caldari insignia tattood on my privates... but in light of recent events I've decided to keep my options open in-case CCP do start selling faction standings or skillpoints for real money.
Not cancelling my accounts yet - just incase they do pull themselves back from the brink - but definitely checking out the other games on the market.

Gotta remember that Perpetuum is new, not 7(?) years old like Eve. However I will reserve judgement untill I have given it a trial. I may give your WOT a looksee too.
I just want to try something else while this crap is happening here. It seems like the only thing that CCP will listen to is if we unsub for a while. Not saying I will leave Eve forever, but I sure as hell don't want to play it at the moment.

Edited by: Triple Entendre on 25/06/2011 09:16:44 It's not so much 'flawed' as still heavily in development. However, so far, it's more than playable, and the devs chat and hang about on the forums of their own volition. One of them apparently woke up early and was bored, so decided to come hop into our chat channel for some idle banter and to see how we were finding the game.
- 12 man dev team
- Those devs and the GMs seem to be trying their hardest to embed themselves in the community
- Those devs seem to be highly motivated
- They're also actively looking for, and apparently taking onboard both advice and criticism
- Also showing interest in what the players want to see in the future
- World still being fleshed out
- Buggy but more than playable
- Still has the feeling of something 'new' and fresh...
- Has one hell of a lot of potential
You know, people were right. This IS just like Eve.
The Eve of 2003 - 2004, back when CCP were loved, not near-universally berated.
For any devs reading this, don't take this as an attack. We're not abandoning Eve or CCP. You seem to be the ones abandoning us. After the last 24 hours or so, though, don't be surprised that we're not here if you ever come back.

Perpetuum is basically EVE circa 2004 with several modern MMO staples included. It really is a good game if you join not expecting it to be the same game EVE is right now, and look at just how much the developers care about their game and it's future.

Right. One last bump and then I'm off to sleep for real.
Seriously. If you missed the experience of early Eve, come and try Perpetuum. Is it perfect? No. But it's got a soul behind it, at least. And that's more than can be said about today's Eve.
There's nothing quite like seeing something like this grow over time. Unfortunately, there's also nothing quite like seeing them in their death throes, as we're all finding out now. We can hope this small indie developer learns from CCP's current little issue.

The best way to describe this game to people looking to play it is:-
Take all the basic mechanics of why EVE is good and then improve upon them here and there, and then put them into a game which isn't quiet as polished as EVE and add mechs.
Put simply, all the basic mechanics of eve (skill point system, the overview, control system etc etc) are all basically the same as EVE Online, with vastly improved systems.
For example, the Skillpoint system is like EVE. Except you don't have to train a specific skill. It goes into a pool. So there is none of this getting up and changing skills or stupid skill que. As long as you sub the same, you get SP.
You can use cover to avoid getting shot. So line of sight helps. Lots of little things.
THERE IS NO LOCAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE IS NO CLOAK. THERE ARE NO CAPITALS.
Just remember the game is VERY young and doesn't have a huge base of players yet, but it will come. So it will be rough around the ages and you will not completely like it. But it is good. Give it a bit of time.
ALSO the Trial Account they have is not super great, because it doesn't let you see PLAYER made market orders. So this is a bit limiting, but it's cheaper than EVE online so just sub for a month and see how it goes.
ANd also, in terms of weapon Balancing. Unlike EVE they figured out how to do it. You have 3 races instead of 4. Everyone's base race is minmatar, so all can use projectiles, then each race has lasers, hybrids or missiles. Shove that up your balance pipe CCP.

Yeah, DEVs and GMs hang out in helpchat, but are not terribly talkative. They do offer up tidbits of pretty much common knowledge, though, now and then.
Biggest beef, tho, has got to be getting from place to place. No autopilot (to speak of, because mechs get stuck on /everything/), and they're SLOW. :/
Other than that, it seems pretty cool. Needs a lot of growing, but has potential. It's look and function is so close to Eve it's as if CCP leased out the kernel...

Don't fault CCP for this. This is a fact of the computer gaming world. New technology comes about, requirements increase. You can't avoid it. Especially with regards to shader 3, which was being supported by video cards being made as early as 04/05.

Look at this way. For years I have recommended EVE online to every gamer I have ever met. Even if I continue to play EVE, I will never ever say that people should play it ever again after the way the DEV's have acted.

Have you test the game? playing/paying a eve-clone with a fu*** slow mech, oudated graphic, PVP = joke and dont talk about PVE.
And yeah they should make an IQ test before let you sub to Eve, with the number of ******s we got online i doubt 10% of you will be allowed to sub

Oh, it is CCP's fault. They have become the henchmen of ATI and Nvidia. You do not have to do it, you know? EVE would have continued to run without Incarna.
I have just again lost a friend, who has been playing EVE on a laptop and now cannot login. And for what?
So we can have 3D avatars with 1b ISK monocles for which we need SM 3.0?
If you want to create and run an MMO then you have to support your community more than any other computer game maker, or you are not running an MMO but are trying to run a cash farm, farming computer game players.
I did not subscribe to be a cash cow. I do want to play with friends and to keep them as such for real. If CCP keeps pushing the hardware requirements for things like vanity items and micro transactions then this is what they do. It is what it is. To me does it appear like they are all drunk in Iceland. --

Of course it's not ideal - if EVE Online isn't the EVE you'd want to play then what are the chances some random other game is it? Replacing EVE with Perpetuum will likely not work very well for most people here-
On the other hand, if you like sandbox games, well, it's a sandbox, and there are free trials now. It's definitely interesting if you're into this kind of gameplay, regardless of how much you like ccp right now.

Perpetuum is also implementing Micro-transactions in the not too distant future. Quoted from their developer blog;
"As mentioned in the first part of this blog, this will be a microtransaction feature: for a small fee youÆll be able to purchase packages of multiple paintjob tokens that you can use to finalize colors on your robot."
Apparently they're only going to implement MT just for cosmetic / vanity items, just like CCP said all those months ago, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions and taken one step at a time".

Right, a few hours later...
It's not bad. I don't think it has the depth of Eve, and the GUI is certainly much clunkier - but it's surprisingly similar enough for your average Eve player to pick up pretty quickly.
Graphically it's quite nice - perhaps a bit too cartoony. I think it's probably a lot lighter on your graphics card than many games. I was a little lost to start with because the tutorials are only passingly helpful. The learning curve is not as steep as Eve, but there is an initial hurdle or two to get over before you know how to get around.
I just like robots. It wasn't long before I was scooting about travelling between teleporters and hot-zones shooting at the little mites and looting their exploded carcasses. The bots you start out with are a bit dismal. Basically four legged gun-mounts that skitter around like irritated spiders. There isn't any real feeling of scale. I have no idea how big this thing is supposed to be.
Combat is standard MMO fare. Click to target, wait for a lock, hit your weapons, and wait for it to die. Moving about doesn't seem to make much difference in combat, but you do need to consider target range.
There is no compass. On the big battlefield, I had killed my quota of drones and needed to head for home to sell my loot, and I realised I had completely lost my bearings. It turns out you can turn on a little floating radar map, but it's not on by default, and it took me ages to find it.
Once you know how to turn things on, I found myself unconsciously setting up the GUI to work like Eve. Everything just seemed to fit in the right places, and did the same stuff. The game seems to be essentially Eve Online with robots.
The chat channels were FULL of disgruntled former Eve players. There was a special channel set up for them, with lots of Devs in attendance to welcome the new players and give them personal attention. There were over 100 people in the Eve channel, and they were all talking about how they were giving up Eve and taking up Perpetuum.
There's even talk of setting up a corp called New Eden specifically to cater to disgruntled former Eve players.
I haven't made up my mind yet. I've played it for a couple of hours, and I enjoyed it... and I fully intend at this point to play the entire 15 free days. I'll see then whether this game (which is cheaper than Eve) will end up being the one I subscribe to moving forwards.

Edited by: Sandeman Reserve on 25/06/2011 14:56:23 The Eve channel in Perp is like a wake for Eve Online at the moment. People are chatting about how much they used to enjoy Eve, and how much they're currently enjoying Perp.
Their General Chat channel is so clogged with Eve players jumping ship that they've got a Dev in there who's sole job is to direct people to the Eve channel.
Twice while in the newbie area, I had a dev open chat with me to ask if I was OK and whether I needed a hand with getting to grips with the game. They really are pulling out all the stops. I think they recognise an opportunity here, and aren't afraid to take advantage of it.
This Eve mess could really put Perp on the map.
Eve channel count is up to 110 new users, which is apparently freaking out the regulars.

Well been playing this for a few hours It's a lot of fun, community is pretty good (surprise surprise it's full of likeminded EVE players) Graphics are pretty nice Gameplay isn't bad, a little rough around the edges but hey what do you expect from a 6 month old game.
What I see at the moment is a tremendous amount of potential, and I'm glad I got in this early, finally a game where I'll be one of the old-school vets
Travel is no more irritating than moving around empire/lowsec in EVE, PvE content is a bit flat but they can work on that. The customer support is
I look forward to replacing EVE with this beyond comparison, the dev's are down to earth and friendly ...oh wait

took me about 5mins or so. Might have been a glitch.
So far, we been boosting the playerbase and doubled it go eve players! there is currently a corp up and running, you need to have an active sub ($9,99) which is cheaper then your eve sub and then search for New Eden and apply (ask for one of the ceo's / HR ppl in channel to accept)
Also keep in mind, current market is ****ed up there due to us not crashing it to kingdom come and making it cheaper. So, let's work on that, economy 101 boys!
there is also a TS up for the NEX members and I am sure that if people stick around after the 2 weeks forums will be there, also killboards can be implemented for those who want to show of how many big mechs they killed ---

Was pretty much instant for me: I paid a month with PayPal (demo has some important restrictions), got an email with a code right away which I used to activate my account.
Just 8.99Ç a month and so far it looks interesting - and you know they are using that money to further develop Mech-gameplay, not devoting it to make Space-Barbies, virtual accessories for them, or World of Twilight.

I'm still in the tutorial area, spent the first hour or two just chatting. Eve channel was 200+ the whole time, and the devs announced a new record for accounts (or logins?).
It takes a little getting used to, and of course being new most of us prob have little idea of the good classes, schools, skills, etc that we should be training...so it will be a bit like your first-ever Eve character. All strung out over a zillion skills hehe.
Graphics are fairly decent, UI is interesting for sure. Lots of helpful people, both Eve refugees, devs, GM's, and other players (who seem shocked at the sudden explosion of players lol).
As for the mood of the Eve refugees, seems mostly sad and most everyone hopes for a change so we can resume our subs, but in the meantime, I've already seen some hilarious stuff without even wandering a hundred yards from my starting spot.
PL/NC already 'blobbed' someone and the sudden spam of 'gf!!!' in 'local' (it really is just General Chat but I'm somehow still unable to rid myself of a lot of Eve terms). Saw quite a few explosions of 'gf' in General so seems like it will be a decent bit of fun once I figure out wtf I'm doing. Fifteen days free and $10 to try it with all features (trials are not allowed to use markets I guess, nor join a corp). Not bad since I just saved $100 letting my subs here run out until 'something' happens.
Anyway, give it a shot, might not replace Eve, but it is something fun to do and I'm seeing a lot of familiar names like Shadoo, Paul Clavet, Helicity, etc. Stuff goes here |

Anyway, give it a shot, might not replace Eve, but it is something fun to do and I'm seeing a lot of familiar names like Shadoo, Paul Clavet, Helicity, etc.
you forgot to add the Mittani is there as well, the old FOOM guys (from the FW) are there and I am sure there are more people hidden in different corps as well. ---

ok, first pvp vid I've seen (watched a few more 'proper' engagements after this, looks good), and I wasn't there, but some of the NeX (New Eden eXodus I think is the full name) guys went out with a basic T1 mech 'blob' and got a hilarious surprise during a fight with 2 (3rd shows up at the end) mechs
NeX blob fail!
Looks fun as hell honestly, good to hear some Eve guys laughing and enjoying it. I'm still stuck in the noob area learning everything and figuring out where to put my EP (skillpoints).
NeX seems to be picking up most of the Eve players, though I'm sure eventually they'll all filter out to other/new corps. Very team-oriented game. Got neuted + webbed by some NPC's today that acted a bit like Sleepers in Eve as they do switch targets and employ EW/CW. Stuff goes here |

Ok, I understand exactly why people are looking for an alternative MMO, and why this one appeals. But there is no way I'm getting involved in Perpetuum, there is no future in a company that didn't even have the imagination, skill or vision to invent their own game.
People are mad because CCP have lost their vision of what Eve is, was, and should be. PO never even had a vision in the first place.

There is nothing wrong with copying a good idea and running with it. And the gameplay is not exactly the same, cover use for one which does nothing in EVE. Not to mention there are some penalties applied when you are "blobbing".

I tried Perpetuum again but I stopped playing after ten minutes. I like mech games to follow in the Mechwarrior mould - big hulking wedgey Gundam like robots in a futuristic Japanese anime type setting. But Perpetuum looks like bionic lawnmowers crossed with the Borg. The eve like target countdown just does not flow with me.

Originally by: "DEV BoyC" The patch didn't work guys - we're going to try some new methods to find out where the issue is, which means we'll deliberately let you flood the server in about 30 minutes to collect data. This is our best bet at the moment, and we're sorry for the downtimes - we'll of course compensate everyone for their patience once we have the problems settled (don't ask how, we'll need to decide that later). Also don't worry, EP is still collecting during all this.

Yeah, Blizzard is only successful as a company because of their completely unique ideas.
I mean, they didn't do their start up by porting (read: re-writing) things to different platforms, no sir. And world of warcraft and starcraft are beacons of uniqueness. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

To be honest, EVE took two years to start actually shaping up and 4 to have most of the framework in place (caps, pos etc). These guys seem to be getting there faster than that. From what I can see with my tutorial account this is a closest thing to EVE that is not EVE. Some nice mechanics for combat (cover, more interesting cloaking/spotting, AOE when dying to make blobbing harder and so forth.

They say adding too many ? to a post makes you look insane. Just putting that out there. Perpetuum has a lot of things going for it that Eve does not -its new enough that people get that Wow! feeling from playing a new game, but still similar enough to Eve that they're not completely lost -it fixes some problems that Eve had struggled with for years, namely blobbing and botting -its a 6 month old persistent world with a very small population, so its much easier for any individual or group to have a large impact on it. Look at the NeX corp made up of people from Eve, that is already the largest entity in the game. -subscription money is likely to be spent on adding new game features, not sunk into developing other games with limited appeal

Looks like they have fixed the servers and have also credited all accounts with 4 days time to make up for the interrupted service over the past days:
Quote: For this we have administered 4 days of game time extension to all subscribed and trial accounts alike. This is fully automatic, you do not have to do anything to claim it, your subscriptions have already been extended.
