Me and my friend are mining, im hauling in my industrial while shes mining all the time. Because of her limited cargo space she jettison the ore into a can (yes Im aware of the risk of ore thieving). I just want to know how long they can survive before imploding? Ive heard something about an hour, something about that its a bit random... how long, maximum, should we dare to wait before jettison a new can?

They are likely to survive at least an hour, and longer is possible, but if you keep one hour as max you should be pretty safe.

minimum of 1 hour, but some can last for several (copmletely random)
i always rejettison my can every 45 mins, just to be safe

last i checked it was 2 hours on the nose. I think this "1 hour" rumor has to do with that idiotic tutorial insurance drone. ______________________ Best darned links ingame and out (backup) |

awhile back i had a friend test it, and he found that containers built with an item lasted longer - he claimed - than those only holding ore.
But also, consider the numbers of changes to eve over the last year - they may have used to occasionally pop in an hour, but they may not now.
I was actually thinking of testing the whole theory here in the next few days.

well, even if it does last longer w/ an item vs ore, i always just use a missle or low cost item (1 of them) to jettison and then we dont accidentally grab everything from the container and have to make a new one

personally, between you and me, i say "screw it" - i never try to extend a 'jetcan's lifetime. just make a new one. saves you doubting whether or not an hour or two's work isn't going to literally *poof* ______________________ Best darned links ingame and out (backup) |

Seen 'ore jetcans' last over 2hrs in a belt. Accidently forgot one there :) Personally when mining to a jetcan, I refresh them once an hour and set the time to the nearest 5 minutes (ie: I jet the can 14:01 and set the time to 14:05) just to be on the safe side.
I've actually seen a can last over 12 hours but it had an item inside it. Perhaps when your not in it's vicinity, a timer is paused/reseted? Not 100% sure but worth checking out. -- Currents ships lost in Exodus: 3x Moa, 1x Kestrel, 1x Merlin

Edited by: MinorFreak on 22/02/2005 15:35:47 just might have to to end the bloody rumours
edit: tested. two hours, just like we've always known. only variable i suppose would be the server "refreshing" every 5 minutes just like the assets window. apart from that caveat, it's as regular as clockwork. Any deviation is purely happenchance, coincidence and outright just plain human misconception. |

It's varied considerably for me.
In my younger days when my first corp used to mine in 0.6 systems together, we'd find that jet-cans lasted precisely 90 minutes.
Then this one time while NPCing deep in 0.0, I lost my Apoc and had no-one else around to pick up my stuff. So I few all the way back to Empire in a pod (no clonejumping with my implants), bought and insured a 'Geddon with the Apoc insurance money, then flew that ship all the way back out to my 0.0 spot and my can was still there, about 70 jumps and several hours later.

In patch "Patch 1754 to 2942: Exodus Expansion"
Quote: All cargo containers of the simple type "Cargo Container" will explode after 2 hours (maximum of 2 hours and 23 minutes
Hope this helps.

i'm assuming the "randomness" is just them being cagey about how often the server updates things like that. probably more like, "20 hours plus maybe up to five minutes, but perhaps a chance at 23minutes if IT isn't up to snuff" ______________________ Best darned links ingame and out (backup) |
