Hey everyone,
I spent yesterday enjoying my first day of a free 15 on the Perpetuum server and I must admit that the game is pretty good.
It is very similar to EvE online and is currently at about the stage EvE was in 2003. I got to speak to some of the Devs and GM's of Perpetuum and they are a nice bunch, mostly from Hungary and they seem to have thier player base set firmly at the centre of everything they do.
Since the 'MT Gate' here in EvE they have seen a large influx of new players either subbing or atleast doing the free trial. The 'EvE' channel consisted of 228 players while i was online with 450 odd in the general chat main channel.
The game itself is set on one world and you take control of a robot instead of a space ship but apart from that anyone with a bit of EvE under thier belt will find it a... well not EASY transition, but definetly a bit less painfull than starting the game with no outside knowledge.
There is no 'Low Sec' type area, just guarded and ungaurded (High and Null) and I have yet to try the PVP but so far everything else seems to point to this being a good game.
I would suggest, if planning or already have unsubbed from EvE to try this game. With extra money from new subs from Ex-EvE players I'm sure that the development of this new game will be swift and I personally am looking forward to seeing where it goes.
I have unsubbed from EvE online with the 3 accounts that I own. This is a huge step for me personally as this is my only MMO and I have made alot of good friends here with TBRA, Python, Fla5hy and the other bloggers I have met and spoke to.
If you decide to stay, Fly dangerous.
If you decide to try Perpetuum make sure you give me a shout in passing and in the EvE channel =)

Agreed on lameness. It's a ****ty wannabe EVE clone. The old UI they had was even more EVEish and blatantly "based" (more like ripped off) of EVE.

I'm a loyal EVE player. But I wanted to go see what all the fuss is about with Perpetuum. I tried to fill out the 15 day trial form, but the submit button didn't work :P

I've tried this for a few hours so far. It's not bad. I don't think it has the depth of Eve, and the GUI is certainly much clunkier - but it's surprisingly similar enough for your average Eve player to pick up pretty quickly.
Graphically it's quite nice - perhaps a bit too cartoony. I think it's probably a lot lighter on your graphics card than many games. I was a little lost to start with because the tutorials are only passingly helpful. The learning curve is not as steep as Eve, but there is an initial hurdle or two to get over before you know how to get around.
I just like robots. It wasn't long before I was scooting about travelling between teleporters and hot-zones shooting at the little mites and looting their exploded carcasses. The bots you start out with are a bit dismal. Basically four legged gun-mounts that skitter around like irritated spiders. There isn't any real feeling of scale. I have no idea how big this thing is supposed to be.
Combat is standard MMO fare. Click to target, wait for a lock, hit your weapons, and wait for it to die. Moving about doesn't seem to make much difference in combat, but you do need to consider target range.
There is no compass. On the big battlefield, I had killed my quota of drones and needed to head for home to sell my loot, and I realised I had completely lost my bearings. It turns out you can turn on a little floating radar map, but it's not on by default, and it took me ages to find it.
Once you know how to turn things on, I found myself unconsciously setting up the GUI to work like Eve. Everything just seemed to fit in the right places, and did the same stuff. The game is essentially Eve Online with robots.
The chat channels were FULL of disgruntled former Eve players. There was a special channel set up for them, with lots of Devs in attendance to welcome the new players and give them personal attention. There were over 100 people in the Eve channel, and they were all talking about how they were giving up Eve and taking up Perpetuum.
I haven't made up my mind yet. I've played it for a couple of hours, and I enjoyed it... and I fully intend at this point to play the entire 15 days. I'll see then whether this game (which is cheaper than Eve) will end up being the one I subscribe to moving forwards.

Honestly I dont know what all this fuzz is about. Who cares about blody monocles anyway! its not mandatory to fly ship! Also, the CQ is fine! Using maybe a little much resources atm. but that will be sorted out. Also, I cant see the CQ as a problem for flying! No, its not a problem. MT is not a problem either! Now, if CCP makes it possible to buy game breaking items through MT, now that is a different thing. But untill you can, I dont really care about all this fuzz.

I'm hearing Perpetuum mentioned a lot in Eve, so I'll be absolutely trying it out once my remaining time in Eve runs out. In the meantime I'm protesting flat out in Eve, but come the end (46 days to go - amusingly someone just paid for an old buddy trial I gave out - but I doubt protesting will stay fun that long) I'll be trying out everything that looks sandboxish and doesn't involve CCP.
So please - keep suggesting alternatives! Thanks :-)

It's kinda funny people are linking it and recommending it here. Before CQ, anyone who posted that here would be told it was a crappy game, useless game, buggy game and so on.
Funny :)

Edited by: MotherMoon on 26/06/2011 11:46:22 I'm actually really liking it.
I love the player run economy * something CCP doesn't give a **** about* and how they are putting in MT store with items that cost 1-3$ a piece, and have stated multiple times *per hour in fact* no non-vanity items ever. Very smart move.
Plus the way different robots can walk up different levels of terrain, and cover blocks buttles dispite using the lock on system eve does.
Very cool stuff.
it does need a lot of work in the UI department, but hell, so does eve!
edit: it has NOTHING to do with CQ. CQ is amazing and the best thing ever added to eve. It's the dev attitude towards it's playerbase.

This game's becoming lame too. Eve is going downhill atm mainly thanks to poor management.
Edit: Note: Not played Perpetuum yet.

I already play EVE and WoT, adding another game (especially with mechs!) doesn't bother me much. Although there's gonna be a lot of badass console games coming out later in the year to play with too.
On a COMPLETELY UNRELATED note, I highly recommend being a house husband/having at the most a part time fun job and letting your woman (who's smarter than you anyway) make all the moneys while you cook and play games all day.

As a working man, I have one important question:
How about experience? Is training same time-based as EVE's? If I have to grind my experience points like wow, don't think I'm gonna be dropping in, on the other hand if I can set training while off I will probably go for it.

Well enjoy your monocles then. The good thing is the game doesn't have the **** playerbase EVE is going to have when it really wents to **** in another 2 months. I hope you all have subbed for a year, throwing your money out of the ****ing window. I also hope you purchase some barbie-doll-dresses, shoving your money into CCP's throat, being one of their cash cows.

Dude, an "another EvE" is exactly what they wanted.
When someone says: "Lol it's crap, it's like EvE in 2005", that someone is exactly saying to the players that they finally found their old EvE again, the EvE they wanted, the EvE they missed.

It¦s time based. You get your Perp-equivalent of SPs over time and can spend them for skills and stuff. This means you don¦t need to have a skill running, you just get points into your SP-pool and you invest them as you need it.

You get one skillpoint per minute (account-wide, also when offline) and you can spend that on one of your character's skills on your account. Skills start out with 50-200 points for level one and go up in the thousands. Skills are kinda like, stolen from EVE but they have 10 levels now

I haven't quite eve nor dumped my subscription. I'm waiting to see what happens. I don't like the direction EVE seems to be heading and this looks like an option.
That said, I downloaded the game today to try out their trial. One statement I've read on it: "It's like EVE 5 years ago..." I wasn't playing back then but it looks decent, a hell of a lot less polish to some things (like the tutorial system)) but EVE has improved a lot of the intro stuff just since I've been playing and it seems Perpetuum is more lacking players/funding versus being distracted with other developer endeavors so I might subscribe.
Lots of new ex-EVE players there, that's for sure. There's even a chat channel setup recently by EVE folks and plenty of help "translating" the in-game jargon from spaceships to robots.
I may not like everyone in the community but this game has a hell of a decent area that I do get along with. The "community spirit"... that goes and there won't be much left beyond "spreadsheets in space" here so I'm checking out my options.

And lets go to mech-online ;)
