I am a pretty new player, with about 11m SP, and I'm starting to work my way into level 4 missions but I need advice on ship usage.
From what I've heard the Caldari line is basically supreme in mission running, but I have very few missile skills and really have no desire to fly a raven or tengu, let alone spending the time to upgrade to a golem or CNR. I fly minnie and ammar ships, and I'm currently using an armor tanked cane to run level 3 missions which are a breeze, and even a few of the easier L4s, although they take a lot of time and it's really not very efficient.
Right now my cane is fitted in all t2, with t2 guns, and I'm currently training up shield skills as I've seen a lot of minmatar fits on battleclinic using shield tanks. My main questions are as follows: Which are the prime minmatar ships I should be flying in L4s? I've seen mostly maelstrom fits (also is shield tank the way to go here?), so should I not try and use a tempest or typhoon for missions? Also, should I continue running L3s quickly in my cane while I train tier2 large projectiles? Or could I fit named T1 arti guns on a maelstrom/tempest while training for T2 and still run L4s somewhat effectively? Also any feedback on specific fits / skill training reccomendations would be appreciated! Thanks for reading

Mealstrom is a good choice. Large Alpha means using Faction Ammo is cheaper as well.

Thanks, that looks like a great setup while I train for T2 large guns. So I'm guessing using named T1 would still let me run the missions with relative speed / ease? Also a maelstrom really my only option? Should I not worry bother with a tempest or typhoon?

Meta 4 is pretty much the way to go on an arti fit as T2 is a ***** to fit. T2 opens up the autocannon option with Barrage though so it's still well worth training.

Forget the Typhoon outright. There are hack cruise/arti/sentry fits out there but not only is the training time ludicrous when trying to get in L4s, the efficiency is also meh.
They Tempest is sort of an option if you have no shield skills. But the Maelstrom is definitely the go-to Minmatar mission ship.

Thanks, I didn't realize T2 arty is not really used. My shield skills are meh right now, but it's only about a week or so to get them up to par for a decent t2 shield tank, so I'll just hold off for a bit and keep flying the Cane while I get matar BS IV and large turret skills as well as my shield tank.

^^^ T2 Artillery IS used, the Large arty spec skill to 4 adds an extra 8% damage to each shot, so it does add up.
Also, T2 arty is usually cheaper (not always though).
Lastly, only equip T2 1400's when you have AWU to 4, you won't need as many PG modules by then (but will still need some)

I am pretty new myself (16m SP) and was quiet disapointed by the Mael in lvl 4s. While the tank is a beast with average shield skills, the damage applies very slow, and it's a bit boring waiting between 2 volleys (even if the sound makes up for it)
Looking around I beleive a Mael shines with T2 large AC, and I'll be training for that.
In the same time I spent a week cross training for a dominix - only at BS3 and sentry 3 - and it performs better overall (also it doesn allow you to spend your time on something else). Once i get those 2 skills at lvl 4 I will start going for T2 large AC and sit again in my Mael
as for the typhoon, I couldn't get enough dps from it, and the tempest enough tank

If you can fly the Domi and the Mael, the next logical step is the Machariel. Not only is it one of the best mission boats, it chews through l4s

The maelstrom is beastly with T2 auto-cannons. I once tried the artillery version and I must say it is horrible compared to the AC version. When you get enough isk, buy yourself a Machariel to run missions; you'll be laughing by then.
Here's THE best fit you could have for level 4 missions once you get T2 AC. Note that travelling from one gate to an other takes ages.

Maelstrom ftw.
Use 800mm for missions where the rats get close, and use 1400mm for sniping on missions where you can dictate range.

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply T2 1400s were never used. But if you have to drop a gyro to fit them then scouts can push out more damage.
