Anyone else that gave up going into official GW outlets feel that fearlessgate has the familiar reek of a particular rotten corporate model to it?
My question is this: Are such shameless cashgrabs intentional 'golden parachute'-style guttings of the clientelle, or do companies truly so easily lose sight of the value of lengevity vs. short-term gain?
For once, I hate saying 'I told you so', but I called this with the removal of learning skills. It set a precident for trading difficulty and longevity (you're less likely to give up an account you ground out the learning skills on), for shortsighted gains (lower the introduction barrier to bring in new [feckless] money}. Smart move from the devs convincing the playerbase to drink the 'easy before good' flavored kool-aid; the majority of players had not trained learning to max, and so were happy to rob those that had of their edge. When you don't consider long-term consequences, you reap what you sow, and that goes for the playerbase as well as the devs.

I'm confused. Are you saying CCP wouldn't be heading for a financial meltdown and feel the need to go MT crazy to get more revenue if they had left the learning skills in? Or that removing learning skills was just part of their plan to get more subscribers and therefore more money?

My commentary on learning skills was little more than an afterthought. I'm not claiming, nor have I ever, that the removal of learning skills is/was/will be responsible for a decline in the quality of EVE or the the precarious position CCP finds itself in. Rather I asserted, and maintain, that the removal of learning skills was a telling symptom - or precursor - of this 'golden goose' perspective that CCP has of it's its clientelle.
So, your latter question is closer to the mark; they seem to want to "cut us open" and get all the golden eggs NOW, to hell with the impact it has on Eve in the long run.
Ironic that CCP would compare us to a golden goose while metaphorically gutting us. I wonder if any of them are actually familiar with the entire fable?

Yeah I agree. Trying to squeeze more money out of an already very profitable game that they're not spending *that* much money on could turn up end backfiring on them. Guess we'll find out once they release their 2011 annual report.

Sadly, the fact we live in a World of almost free information does not mean we live in a world of MORE informed people.
People out there still make a living, a healthy one at that, "counseling" companies to avoid the same mistakes companies have been doing like forever.
It's appalling to see this happen over and over again, but then, I guess it's sheer human nature to think you are doing it right in a Dunning-Kruger effect of epic proportions.
What can I say? meh , I hate greed, with a passion.
