I'm new to EVE, so please bear with me if this question is common knowledge around here. I haven't got around to reading every readily avalible source text and isktheguide is quite massive. It is my understanding that Jita is THE trade hub of EVE and surpasses the others by several orders of magnitude in volume and product diversity, but I am having a hard time figuring out how I will build substantial standings with the caldari and their navy without the aid of a combat vessal (something I have little interest in with a huge number of trade and industrial skills to train). Is is feasible to actively trade in other hub settings with decent volume? ie. enough to keep me busy a few hours per day. It would tickle my rp-side to work with the gallente faction, but as far as I can tell they are one of the less popular races at the moment.
Thank you for your time.

It is not needed at all to build standings, unless you plan on interacting with things other than the market window, which I cannot imagine many traders do.
I imagine Jita to be a swell place, but if you're just starting I also imagine that one of the more minor trade hubs will offer a better place to learn without being swamped with competing orders (I trade in Amarr), if you plan on spending several hours a day on it though, Jita might be the better choice.
This is all assuming you wish to station trade though. If you just want to haul stuff I really can't help you with anything. "A fool flatters himself, a wise man flatters the fool." |

My understanding was that factional and corporate standings with the station owners was vital to reduce the local tax and allow for a narrower profit margin. Although I agree that I have already found a good deal of modules where such a reduction is superfluous, i'm very much a min-max type of player so it would feel better to work in a place where I could readily raise my standing with distribution missions.

Edited by: Callean Drevus on 02/07/2011 08:07:43 Reduction based on standing is the case when manufacturing/reprocessing, but not when using the market AFAIK.
There are skills for that. "A fool flatters himself, a wise man flatters the fool."

Standings reduce the taxes cost by a small amount, they are certainly not vital unless you trade in high volume/low margin items.

Edited by: Tekota on 02/07/2011 08:58:07 Standings reduce brokers fees. The difference in my opinion does add up but will not rule you out of many markets if it's left at default. Faction standing has a bigger effect than corp standing.
Accounting skill reduces (and is the only thing that reduces) sales tax - this will go from 1% down to 0.5%. Broker relations skill further reduces broker fees.
Getting both accounting and broker relations to 5 is a solid move but won't stop you trading whilst they're being trained. Getting faction and corp standings is also a solid move but shouldn't stop you trading whilst you do so. Just check your margins on trades, make sure you cover your fees. If you can make a profit on a 3% margin where others would only break even as a result of your superior standings and skills then that market is yours.

Yes, and Yes. With 6.67 you can refine at 0% and the Broker's fee will be lower And at the same time get income while you trade in the same station, solar system or more.

Especially if you leave the minimum quantity setting at 1 to drag in more sellers :P

SHENANIGANS! SHENANIGANS! SHENANIGANS!
On a more serious note... This isn't that bad of an idea provided you can make enough contracts to haul the stuff out.
