Meanwhile in the Perpetuum world:
DEV Zoom2011-06-27 03:28:09
I'll start with the straight answer: no, we do not plan or intend to introduce any MT items that affect gameplay or disturb our strict level playing field policy in any way.
We have a manifesto on our site that we have offered to the press at the time we launched, but I guess there is no harm making it public here as well: http://www.perpetuum-online.com/Media:Manifesto
It's no coincidence that the level playing field is mentioned in the very beginning. We take that very seriously, because we think that it is one of the main driving forces behind a healthy sandbox world with a dynamic healthy economy.
Obviously many of you have been burnt by false promises which results in general distrust towards game companies. I'm not here to ask your trust, how could I, this is just a devblog, not a contract. I'm merely asking you to judge us by our past, present and future actions. We are very much aware what happens when you play with the trust of your customers.

Pretty trustworthy for a bunch of guys who perpetrated blatant plagiarism at the very least.

Where are all the emo-ragers *****ing about how Perpetuum is not saying straight up, "We promise we will never do non-vanity MT's in our game"? Because that's what Zoom is saying there - that's not a promise, that's just saying they don't have any plans to right now.

Making video games doesn't have a whole lot to do with nature.

Oh, don't get your monocles in a bunch, now!
You're just jealous they don't ask you to kiss their ass, like other *cough*CCP*cough* companies are. |

Well I'm sorry but it can't be plagiarism because they're introducing features that actually work.

I wouldn't debase myself in that way, peasant. I just don't find bedbugs pretending to be spaceships very stimulating.

If it works, use it.
I wish more games WOULD take good things about other games. Like Mass Effect's conversation system, why haven't more games used it? IT'S FREAKING AWESOME.

I also don't find being suddenly ninja-ass-****d by a company I thought cared about it's playerbase very stimulating, but I guess we all have our different tastes. Good day, sir. |

I don't disagree with the whole "standing on the shoulders of giants" approach, but come on, have you looked at perpetuum? From the "real" devblog the other guy linked, they had to hire a fricking outside consultant just to be able to figure out how to let more than 500 people log in. This will only end in tears, for them mostly.

I've seen it, I play Perpetuum. From the blog, they used one of their contacts to help them find a bug, I'm not a programmer, but I'd imagine that looking through a lot of code looking for one bug will eventually send you brain dead.
One of my friends worked for Intel, and I remember one day he couldn't figure out why his ram wouldn't fit. It took him 10 minutes to figure out he was trying to put it in the wrong way, it happens.

A good dev gets help when the situation calls for it. But that's not the point. The point is that the devs openly communicate what's going on and even admit that they got outside help to fix a bug. What does that tell you?

The difference is this:
I want to play a game made by people that want to make a great game because in their heart they are like me: geeky grown-up kids that like cool, hardcore MMOs. It's like this one Indian dude that has a tiny little restaurant/shop in the town I live in. He doesn't have a fixed menu and sometimes he runs out of certain ingredients or products but boy can that guy come up with tasty meals! So tasty in fact that he sometimes sits down with you at your table and has a plate full himself.
You on the other hand want McDonald's where CCP Zulu stands behind the counter, speaking in a gross shrill voice asking you: "do you want to go Super Monocle on that one for only 99 cent extra?"
And there are certainly some advantages that McDonald's has over the Indian restaurant. It's just that McDonald's gives me the runs if I eat there to often.
