New bill in congress that prevents showing copywrited material on the internet. It's meant to prevent people from uploading movies/tv shows/free music on the internet. The way it's worded will outlaw uploading videos of Internet Games (Eve Online possibly, though they're in Iceland so I'm not sure) as well, and will make it a FELONY to upload videos of the games! Preventing videos of video games of being posted on the internet will hurt the gaming industry as a whole. The bill needs to be reworded. This bill is in the very earliest stages of becoming law, but our opinions need to be heard.

oh look a law that wont be enforced. i highly doubt any person will follow it, at most it gives websites like youtube and facebook the authority to close accounts and remove videos and stuff at any time they want. however if i upload a video of my awesome suicide gank, i doubt it will go away

except it would make uploading an EVE Online video a felony in the US unless you have express permission to do so from CCP, would you want to risk uploading a video without that permission if a 5 year jail sentence hangs over your head if they decide they, or someone in the justice department doesn't like you? |

i downloaded starcraft 1 and 2, homeworld 1 and 2, 100 gigs of music 10 new movies and used to download all my xbox 360 games..... yes i'l risk it, because its ******ed and is considered an annouance crime and they will only do anything if you try to profit yourself or your a moron and download 500GB of new movies and music in a day.
believe it or not the law is pretty nice on internet crime, as long as children are safe and people arnt losing much. also, it hasnt be passed yet has it? laws in the US take time to even get considered, osamabama might also veto it.

really cause you cant rent, or try out PC games unless there is a demo or trial, at the time the only way to get a demo/trial was to buy the game. starcraft 1 is hard to find in stores, pirate it play single player delete starcraft 2 was impossible to get when i got it... played single player, delete homeworld 1 nad 2 are pretty much impossible to get , pirate it play me vs AI delete, well i had homeworld 2 at one time, so its not really pirating it...
xbox games i did were all garbage games that didnt deserve to be released in the first place, basically i just midigated block buster or gamefly MS banned my console as i expected but you know, i expected it, and it was worth it.
the "piracy/hacker" community in the end usually helps out developers, do u have any idea how many of my friends got batman arkam asylum after i pirated it? i told them it was THE BEST batman game ever, so my free copy gave them 5 more sales + 2 rentals from gamefly..
i liked starcraft 2 singleplayer, when my friends got the real game i decided i'd join them for multiplayer, so in the end i bought that too,
piracy is a good thing when it isn't rampant

its never good. people feed their families and raise their children with that income and they need it
they are creative and they are making the world a better place for entertainment. buy it and support their work or fvck yourself.
nobody pirates something for a free demo and later buys it. thats just bull they say to rationalize theft to themselves

Shows how much you know. I've bought music and videos that I have previously pirated, provided it's worth the money. So your point is moot.

Edited by: Jade Imp on 02/07/2011 20:50:06 The second time i pirated anything video game related was the Frozen Throne. I got a letter 2 weeks later from Comcast and from Blizzard. Blizzard's said stop basicly. Comcast's said "do it again and we cut your account off." needless to say i havent uh, torrented a game since.
Edit: I have also pirated games and later bought them when i found how good they were. _______________________________________________ I'd have something witty here but my wits have left me for my alt. |

piracy is more like a rental for games. and in fact its a pain to pirate anything at least IMO, ( then again all pc games are pain in the asses to play in general)
but music? "i like this song guys its new from so and so, listen to it" im sure some buy it on itunes or something
movies? "wow this movie is awsome its called such and such," i'm sure someone will at least netflix it, if not buy or rent... movies are normally something to avoid buying anyways
games? well 90% of pirated games don't work online, so its the SP expierience usually for a game designed for epic multiplayer, like starcraft, good single player, but mp is what people want... tried it, liked it, bought it later.
IN FACT, when u torrent a 360 game and look at the .info, it usually says "if you like the game, support the developer and buy it new" did that for Forza 3, Dragon age origins, but halo ODST sucked, didnt buy that one..

You are wrong.
I've pirated things as a trial to see whether or not it's worth buying. Music, movies, and games fall under this list. If the game is bad, I delete it. If it's good, I buy it, so I can keep up with dlc and the like.
The way I see it, this is a counter to the mass production of terribly short and poorly made games that we do see a good bit now days. Don't forget that you never own the game, and the company can revoke your "right" to use their game at any point they feel like. I believe that video game companies are already too powerful in this respect. We need to either own games we as consumers purchase with the right to transfer the game to others, or companies need to do a better job of making people understand that only the company owns the game. Consider this, companies are mass producing "DLC" that they could easy implement in the game in order to make a few more bucks off people. EA has said thet they plan to charge people $10 USD if they buy their madden games used in order to play online.
EDIT fixed a typo.

This is not the first time they've tried to pass a bill like this, and it won't be the last. I doubt it'll get past this Congress, though there's always the next one. But I think that this Congress, like the last one, will see what this bill really is (the big content companies trying to unload the cost of their legal departments onto the DOJ) and said big content companies have not (yet) bought enough Senators and Representatives to actually get this bill through...
