I've only been playing for a couple weeks or so and I'm really liking exploration. I've been running missions too so I guess I plan on doing a mixture of both to make money while I train. I've got an Imicus right now cuz it lets me do the radar sites that I find but most of the anomalies and complexes are too much for me to handle, and I don't really like the idea of switching ships since I like to roam from system to system and I don't want to find a good site and realize I left my Merlin 7 jumps back. I'm almost ready to hop into a cruiser and I've read that Vexor and Arbitrator are really good for noob solo exploration but I don't really want to crosstrain until I get my caldari skills to a decent level. Can I do most high-sec sites in a Caracal? I'm thinking something like this:
[Caracal, caracal explore] Ballistic Control System II Ballistic Control System II
Codebreaker I Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Thermic Dissipation Field II Kinetic Deflection Field II
Upgraded 'Malkuth' Rapid Light Missile Launcher, Scourge Light Missile Upgraded 'Malkuth' Rapid Light Missile Launcher, Scourge Light Missile Upgraded 'Malkuth' Rapid Light Missile Launcher, Scourge Light Missile Upgraded 'Malkuth' Rapid Light Missile Launcher, Scourge Light Missile Core Probe Launcher I, Core Scanner Probe I
Medium Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I Medium Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I
Hobgoblin I x1 Hobgoblin I x1
My scanning skills are still a bit low (lvl 2-3) so I dunno if I'll be able to scan the sites down without a ship bonus but the rigs should make up for that I hope. I'm training for a Drake but I don't think it's allowed in 3/10s and I've found quite a bit of those. I'd also like to do 4/10s and maybe even some lowsec stuff once I get the hang of things a bit more. I've been pretty lucky with loot I think and could actually afford a Navy Caracal but if a regular one is sufficient I'd rather use that, especially if I'm gonna do some things in low sec. You guys think this will be ok or should I take a few days and crosstrain to a Vexor or something?

If you can afford the fancy navy ship then maybe consider putting that isk into a set of sisters' launcher and probes. That should make up for the ship bonus nicely. Also consider the probing support skills. |

No. Sisters probes and launcher give a 10% scan strength bonus each, and you're looking at 40+ mil for the launcher alone. A t1 bonused hull will give a 25% bonus (racial frig skill at V), and a t2 bonused hull will give up to 50%
I wouldn't try to seriously explore without an unbonused scanship unless you have a good handle on the process of scanning and have your skills at 4...even then I think for most purposes a bonused ship is better.
op: Your fit looks okay, but I really think you should have a propulsion mod. You'll need to burn from gate to gate in most DED sites, from can to can in radar sites, and if you go into lowsec, you'll really really want a MWD to be able to burn back to the stargate if there's a camp on it.
As far as ability, I'd say it could take 3/10s, is massive overkill for hisec radars/mags, and could run most lowsec radars/mags but not lowsec DED complexes. |

I recommend using just the Sister probes + a normal launcher + cloak on the best bonussed ship you can fly. There are usefull rigs that increase scan strength. You don't need a T2 covops ship at all, these help with warping cloaked, and are very handy when you start exploring outside of hisec. Using a bonussed / rigged ship, you should be able to scan down every site. It's very frustrating to get sites up to 90% and realize you don't have the scan strength to get it up to 100%. Hence we switch ships! |

I posted this in another thread just now so I'll drop it in here too.
Aforementioned thread

Cormorant [MPV fit]

Shield Booster Shield Extender Analyzer Codebreaker
Magnetic Field Stabilizer
I haven't yet found something in 0.7 to 1.0 that it cannot handle even with terrible skills as mine are.
You can use a similar setup on a Ferox that should be able to handle anything in high sec 0.5 and up.
Very little skills required, does the job, extremely cheap and you can afford to lose as many as you like, It's also perfect for any lvl 1 mission and most lvl 2 missions. It's unfortunately paper thin so it wont stand up to suicide ganks for example but then at that price who cares :p
Also the entire setup fits well into a lowly skilled Badger I, should you feel the need to do that for any reason :p
Hiro Ceffoe wrote:Anyway OP you can give this a shot if it doesn't work for you then you will only lose, say 4-5 mil tops.
It might also be worth mentioning I load it with 2500 Antimatter, Lead and Iron charges, that way you can better dictate the engagement range, it reaches about 30km (like I said, crap skills :p) travels at about 300m/s (which is enough to outrun most cruiser rats found in high sec and keep them at 20-30km) and has a generous enough cargo hold of about 450m3, so you shouldnt need to worry about all that salvage and other fun gear you run accross in the empty void of space. Just urm don't use autopilot, one smartbomb will really ruin your day :p |

I spent my first 3-4 months in eve solo exploring in high sec and some in low.
These were my two methods. Scanned using a t1 scan frig, saved BMs and travel back with my combat ship. Or used an all in one. I used a Gila, which I loved. My scan skills were all to 4, and I literally had no trouble scanning high sec sigs with an unbonused ship. Just a sisters probe launcher. While my Gila fit was a little spendy, it paid for itself in no time.
The problem with high sec exploration is running them and scooping the loot before a tengu jumps in and in 30 seconds steals your site that you just spend 20 minutes scanning and running. If you have an alt, scan and bookmark (or provide warp in) for your main. If you don't have an alt I suggest an all-in-one.. Or good luck finding decent sites to run that arent 5-10 jumps away, and running back only to find them cleared out.
Just my experience. Good luck and have fun. Exploration was my only income and I did pretty well when I was starting out. |

It would be nice of there was an exploration ship that could actually work as an exploration ship so you wouldn't have to find some unorthodox. What if you had to use two ships to run each mission or to go mining? You will find mission running and mining to be the only real option for beginners at this point in the game. |
