I have a few questions about cruise missiles. First of all I've heard that using probes you can destroy ships from pretty far away. Is this true? And if so how does it work? Do you lock on (say you're 2000km's away) to the ship? Will it even allow you the lock on from that far away despite your skills. Using probes do you deploy one close to the target and use that? Using the probe to lock onto the target and the probe sends info back to your ship and when you launch a cruise missile it heads directly toward the enemy ship?
Another question I had is how to use the probes. I've played around with them, spent about 500k on them and still haven't really gotten anywhere. I deployed 3 probes (Fanthom 12au's) In a triangle of sorts. Did analyized some cruisers, found some, and I right click on them, and it says board ship. Does this mean I can board the ship and take it as my own? I found one, and warped to it, but it wasn't there and it said I was 15km's away. So I started running around in circles trying to get closer to it and eventually I ran into something and my ship bounced off of something that wasn't there. How do you find all these riches and tresures people are talking about? I also used the scanner to find a crap load of drones in oursulaert. It didn't tell me the distance however. How do I find those drones?

wow, first of, whoever is telling you this needs to get smacked. alright let's see if i can even begin to answer some of your questions.
first of probes don't destroy anything, they allow you to scan the surrounding area and find things, but not destroy them. there's a thread here somewhere explaining how to use probes in detail, i'll just give you a little summary:
open your scanner fly to 3 seperate places and launch probes in a triangular pattern, close enough to eachother that their scanning radii overlap an area you suspect of containing a ship you want to find. start with the longest range probe you have the skills to use. after deploying 3 probes, select all 3 (use ctrl+click to select all at once) and click analyze, choose desired shiptype to search for.
the probes will analize for 5mins and hopefully give you a BM. fly to that BM and deploy another probe, shorter range this time. select this probe and 2 of the others to analyze again.
repeat until you find the ship you're looking for. your best bet is to try this in a system where you're the only one, because chances are the BS you see on the scanner is being piloted by someone and not parked, even though you're given the 'Board Ship?' option when right-clicking it in the scanner.
and i wouldn't waste my time looking for drones, with the prices for probes these days, you'd need to find an aweful lot of drones to make it worth your while. plus i'm not entirely sure you can scoop drones that don't belong to you anymore.
hope that helped a bit.... ------------------------------------------------

Once a drone has been abandoned it cannot be scooped by anyone, its former owner included.
You have to pick them up in an indy.

errr that was so last patch! you can scoop abandoned drones now no problem just fly up besides them right click on the drone it's self not in the overview and scoop to drone bay.

That helped a bit. I know probes can destroy anything but can you use them to target a ship from far away and launch a cruise missile toward the enemy ship?

Drones! Drones! Drones! Drones! Say after me....Drones!
Probes are a completely different thing and no, you cannot use your drones to lock anything. You can only target that which is within your targetting range (ship and skill dependent). Combat drones can simply be launched and instructed to engage a target (or they will seek their own).

no
Unless there is some bug people are exploiting, you cannot lock something outside your locking range, probes or no probes. _______________________________________________
