Hello,
DT for Japan falls smack bang in their prime time. 8PM.
CCP have a very poor recent history of patches, patches of patches, failed restarts and poor communication when things go bad around DT.
How on Earth do they plan to expose a potentially MASSIVE market of technology consumers and gamers to EVE when it fairly obvious to people who play at this time of day that CCP struggles to find their own bum with both hands.
If EVE starts to take hold in Japan will we see CCP move DT a few hours earlier?
And even if they don't how can they expect to carve out a following when playing EVE can be positively exasperating in this time zone.

I'm pretty sure the Japanese will cope with it the same way we Australians do: schedule dinner for DT.
Actually, they're Japanese. They'll probably spend the 15 minutes of DT making machanima of their EVE avatars getting molested by sex-crazed octopuses. Tentacle ****, best ****.

There are limits to near-infinite patience, especially when that "major patch day" is actually one week with three extended downtimes and happens to be sandwiched inbetween two weeks filled with the other half's bowling club, drinking buddies, birthday parties, baby showers, weddings, and all I wanted was two nights to catch up on training queues, say hello to my corpmates and blow up some little red crosses.
But in the immortal words of Con the Fruiterer's wife Marika, "I no complain." [ Australian players join channel ANZAC ] |

Well, I guess mostly.
Interesting sell in a very competetive market though.
"Come play this awesome new game - well actually, you can't - we patched it and stuffed it up, again. And it will be stuffed for 5 random nights out of the next two weeks."
I just seems like more cash pumped into something when a fundamental isn't sorted. Could it work? Maybe.
Could it just be more milk taken from the cash cow and not improve the current game experience?
Not simple questions.

They're set on a course of development to remove downtime entirely. It would be nice if they could get that done before a big launch in Japan, but what would I know, I'm not a marketing guru.

Oh and I agree that would be a fantastic development.
I have read from CCP before that it has been several years since they wrote any code that had a dependancy on DT and a move to a near elimination of this was the target.
However, I wonder how much it will cost for a conversion of the client, support and all the other added QA etc. when the offering just may not be that attractive. People may think that WoD and Dust is a risk, but isn't this just risk stacked on risk?
I wonder what would be the impact if CCP just decided to bring DT three hours earlier to reduce this one.

Japanese have been playing eve for a long time with only Japanese support not available. The Japanese client has been on the test servers for a few years, so nothing really new here, except, they are releasing it into the live servers now. Guess the new company is the one that will really handle the translation to keep it up with the English changes in the game. |

The solution is simple; eve needs to switch to solid state storage; and fast track memory; contact IBM. |

would they ever consider moving DT to a less used timeslot?
Or is the current timeslot allocated the least used? |

What makes you think they haven't done that already ? Hint : they've done that already. And in case it's not clear enough yet, that's exactly what they did years ago. Did I mention they thought of that already ? |

Does anyone here honestly believe Japanese people are going to suddenly start playing a 20 year old game not based around anime; or ****? |

From what I'm looking at the most quiet time is not where they have DT.
I think this is highlighted that the time around DT is still relatively healthy player number wise and it is likely people are simply turned off by the game by the current DT. So you kind of wonder what it could be.
I don't think people could complain about a 30 minute DT, and it has probably factored into CCP's plans - however, it's the extended outages without explaination that stuff it up. |

Maybe they will simply make a NEX Church server and instead of DT, we'll have "Daily Prayer" where we have to spend 30 minutes in front of the NEX Altar making our offerings.
Or Incarna will be present during Eve downtime, what with them not even being the same product in anyway. Thus making it look like there is no downtime. |

Downtime is 8PM in Japan. I normally take a shower, or run to the store, or rub one out. My main complaint is the lack of people to play with.
If there's an "extended DT" scheduled...well, I've been playing Eve long enough to know that means to put on a long skill and go to the bar.
On the other hand, DT falling during my prime playing time makes moving expensive toys around 0.0 safer.
CCP has previous stated they're aiming to do away with downtime completely in the long term, anyway. |

Frankly I think moving DT makes sense now.
Move it to 13:00 or 14:00 GMT. That way when DT comes around you're looking at 22:00-02:00 local depending where you are in Asia/Pacfic region. I think the people out that way have been pretty patient TBH. Its not just normal DT now - every week or so there's a patch, which while welcome if its fixing bugs does make people wander off to play other games.
The downside is a hit to the people in the GMT+3 (or GMT+4) zones. Wouldn't really be that big a deal for them as local time would be around 17:00-18:00 when it seems quiet enough anyway. Or maybe it would be a big deal - I dunno.
Worth thinking about really as if you consistently have DT/patch in the middle of people's evening (19:00 onwards local time) then they're not going to play. Existing Eve players cope (mostly) but new players won't bother sticking around.
For me it'd make most sense to have DT at a time when server activity is minimal - the current DT isn't that time. Three or four hours later and its a lot quieter in terms of player activity. Obviously people have got used to current DT and as such structure activities accordingly.
Makes no odds to me one way or another anyway. |
