I am planning to upgrade my PvP ship from frigs to a gallante destroyer, the Catalyst. I was anticipating using it in an anti frig role.
Does anyone have a loadout they would recommend for this and in particular would people recommend arming it with railguns and sitting back out of the frigs blaster's range or fitting blasters and getting stuck in at close range?

The destroyers don't have as much speed as the frigates, so going for a close range setup won't work as well since you won't be controlling the distances. I'd say go for rails, and throw in a few smartbombs and/or energy drain things for when they get too close. Add some tracking mods, too. ---------- Vaux CEO, Red Frog Investments |

Ah yes, good thought on the speed difference. Bother, I just sold a named tracking mod.
Anyone any other thoughts?

you dont need tracking modules as you get a ridiculous tracking bonus from the destroyer skill
i stick a sensor booster in midslot (for pod locking), some damage mods in lows, and rails in highs.
good disposable frig/pod popper. no point tanking it. ~~~~)\~~~~~\o/~~~~

Since its an 8, 2, 3 set up and its a gallente power gimper you can't fit "loads" of damage mods as you need power boosting to fit the second best guns hehe. Try this for size. You can substitute the t2 for t1 gear. If you want mwd (not necessary) you have to drop 1 gun. Get Destroyer skill to 3 or 4. It can eat npc cruisers:
Highs: 8 x 125mm rail II
Mids: 1 x 1MN Afterburner II, 1 X Cap recharger I (still not got a t2 version of this - rip off)
Lows: 1 x Small armour rep II, 1 X RCU I, 1 X PDS II
If you lock a frig its night night.

Edited by: fras on 23/02/2005 18:50:31 7x 125 rails, 1x 75 gatling rail scramble, web micro aux, 400mm plate, damage mod
You can fit and use blasters effectively, destroyers are slow but quite a few frigs will come to you.
8x electron mwd, web micro aux, 400mm plate, either a damage mod or small rep depending on place of op.
the small rep is almost useless in the fight given the relatively small hp & bad resistances, but good for repairs between.
Almost 1000 armour hp on both, use all tech 1 as you'll get vapourised by anything cruiser or larger, the extra longevity is good in frig fights tho. Whatever u do don't undock with rails and no web or you wont be able to track up close. Finally don't worry about cap mods, they've got loads even with an mwd.

If you have t2 gun specialisations there is NO WAY you should be in a destroyer.

I wouldn't say that.
Now, i haven't used a destroyer in combat yet but one day i think i will. People are not afraid of them, when an inty spots a destroyer they think 'easy gank'.
Yeah i'd like to see an inty gank a coercer with 8 med pulse II + some dmg mods ________________________________________________________

Edited by: dnfgnfgnfgn on 24/02/2005 04:07:35 Get level one destroyer skill.
Get a minmatar destroyer.
Stick 6 small nosferatues, and 2 small neutralizers in the highs. MWD and whatever tackling setup you want in mids, and two overdrives in lows.
Sucks 33 cap/s without named nosferatus, which is more than 3 best named heavy nosferatus.
Too bad it has an enormous sig radius...

To be honmest the t2 discussion is irrelevent. No way I can afford to fly a destroyer loaded with t2 stuff into PvP combat. Simply couldn't afford to loose that much money.

Now that is worrying. Why is that? And are they right? Are destroyer not good in PvP? Should I just focus on getting upto using intys?

Didn't we already cover that? The gallente destroyer receive a 7.5% tracking speed bonus per destroyer skill level. Is that enough?

Aye thats 7.5% per destroyer level and what 5% for every level of motion prediction so the webby might be overkill. It would slow it down to stop it escaping / keep it on optimal but destoyer has a range bonus too so you are laughing really

So does anyone out there actually fly the Catalyst in PvP and how do you get on? Do you have any tips?

An inty flying around you at 3 km/s + is going to be hard to hit.Heh.

Not outright pvp, but a friendly test. Corp mate left the scene on fire in a Crow after deciding to test the damage the `new` destroyers could do.
8 x 125 rails, sensor booster and bits.

once so far.
2 podkills and a frig in an hour... plus assists on 1 pod and 1 frig - they are useful in fleets to take out tackelrs when the big ships are taking all the fire.
had to run away from an assault frig when i went wandering off on my own though

Ok, lets talk newbie skills nere, meaing less then 1 million skill points with skills everywhere.
Rapid - lvl 2 Controlled - lvl 2 Sharpshooter - lvl 2 Weapon upgrade - lvl 2 Gunnery - 3 Small Hybrid - lvl 3 Dessie - lvl 2
Engie - lvl 3 Grid upgrade - lvl 1 Management - Lvl 1 Sys operations - lvl 1
Electronics - lvl 3 Electronic W. - lvl 1 Electronics upgeade - lvl 3
Am I doomed to be a mediocre dessie pilot? I currently have 5 125s and 2 150s on the dessie, medium shield booster and a tracking mod, damage mod and injector on it. Using Irdium shells.
Thoughts?

If you want to PvP, go for a Cormorant. The extra med slots help loads. Trust me, it works.
