Edited by: Xenuria on 08/07/2011 21:32:27 As you know there are still some people on this planet stupid enough to use Team Speek and even Mumble. While both of these VOIP clients are very easy to lag or crash they also are very easy to get privileges for.
Which begs the question. why do people use them if they are so easy to hack or jack? Is jacking VOIP clients part of the meta-game? I think so. Much the same way jacking a corp would be.
I wonder why everybody dose not just use ventrilo considering it is the most stable and hard to hack, unless your using typefrag lol.
So I ask you CnP community what VOIP client do YOU use and what is the address? For the small price of 50 million isk I will offer penetration testing and afterward tell you how you can make your server more secure.

Legit or not people are going to do it to you. Your better off having a CISSP certified forum troll like me inspect your set up for a small fee then have to suffer the consequences of somebody willing to do harm. |

Most people pay for hosted VoiP servers. These hosting services tend to have their own form of network security.

Ok... try me peasant.
The problem is that the hosts do not allow the end user to impliment their own server side security measures which is why hosting it yourself is sometimes better if you have the ISP for it.
Typefrag servers are a perfect example. They brag and say they are the most secure and yet to this date they are the ONLY HOST left that is still susceptible to codec crashers. |

Wether 'part of the meta game or not', hacking a server is generally illegal in most countries, so if someone pulls this, and you find out who, you can have them arrested for it. I know if someone did it to us, I'd try and make sure the long arm of the law would come knocking on their door.

Edited by: Aiwha on 09/07/2011 05:22:12 Its illegal to DDoS. So I suppose its "against the rules", but not CCP's rules.
Hacking clients is also illegal. (there is a loophole if there's nothing in the MoTD about staying out, but still) |

Yeah I am banned from there already... This was back when I mistakenly thought there were any other real goons left playing eve. I was in the middle of an OP and vile rat came in at the request of spooky donut and banned me. That spooky donut guy is really socially akward. He won't talk with people that arent in his "safe zone".
Now if they were to unban me I would be more then happy to show them whats wrong with using mumble. |

I'm not sure about the legality - but if someone hacked my voice server in order to get an edge on my activities - I'd be well impressed - as long as they kept it to that. Comms hacking - now that's something they should have in the 'Eve is real' video.
If you took that a step further and hacked your enemies bank accounts and emptied the money so they couldn't pay their subs - that would probably be a step too far. You wouldn't get much applause for that.

Circumventing a ban is easy. The goons use API Auth for their mumble so unless I can get my API unbanned I would need to spend 10 dollars on another SA account to get back in. They don't ban by IP alone they ban the account which is needed to actually connect to the mumble. |

As a general rule, hacking into restricted sites/servers is illegal IRL. That typically trumps any in game rules. Sort of like finding out where the enemy FC lives and murdering him. It may not violate the game rules but expect to spend the rest of your life in a not so virtual cage. In any case it's an example of taking a game way too far. Infiltration and spying are part of game mechanics, so is in game espionage. But anything not contained within the eve client/server is probably illegal IRL or at the very least makes you a complete failure as a human. |

For the record Guessing passwords or social engineering access to something is NOT illegal! It IS however part of the eve meta game. |

Guessing passwords/social engineering is illegal when you start using that access, it's termed under "Unauthorized computer access" in laws. |

ok guessing passwords may fall under that category but socialing does not.
If somebody gives you the password to their router and you use it to steal their internet connection that is not illegal. because access was given to you not taken from the person. "Sweet Jesus, It's an Anti-AT field!"

That's true, if you are a simple spy and listening in on their comms with their consent (although they don't know you're a spy) then yeah, it's lagit. But crashing their comms server is not. Circumventing bans is also a violation. And that is what you were talking about in your original post.
