I kinda got to '...lets zoom into the computer....' and paused for a while to mull over the context and general things like that.
Slightly later i unpaused.
WOW - so user friendly, i really dont know why i have trouble using this OS. What could be easier than that ? I dont know, i thought perhaps just a 'search' box somewhere like your erm taskbar or main OS menu, but later thought that was a silly idea.
10/10.
And yes... just.... yes.

I'll eventually put linux on a hard drive for when I want to feel awesome about using a command prompt again. Until then, C&D and GUI for me. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Start menu: search.
Or computer searcher right click organize however the hell you want. I know command line can give you all sorts of [a-Z] | [1-9] but how many files on your own comp are really so unorganized that just double clicking a few folders in a GUI would take more time?

Go with Mint OS saves on RPMing or YUM in all the 3rd party app like java or flash. Also doesnt have that stupid interface that Ubuntu and Fedora 15 uses now.

There's also Cygwin, which gives you a bash shell and gnu utilities on a Windows boxen.

Used Linux exclusively for 10 years.
It is by far and away, especially if you shun binary distros, the best OS out there. Even taking in to consideration all the foibles and bloat of recent kernels.
Now use Windows 7.
Why?
Work & Games. InDesign? No chance. Even EvE is unplayable now post Incarna.
My server still runs Debian ofc. But no DirectPlay, DirectSound, etc makes Holy a dull boy.
And no Cedega/Wine is not 'good enough' for gaming.
Microsoft basically controls the games industry with its secrit API of shyte. BBQ makes me hungry for more... |

Not to nitpick, but Linux is obviously not the best OS out there if it is lacking in such a way that you would recommend using another OS. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Well let's be specific:
Linux is the best OS for pretty much everything an enhtusiastic computer user would want and probably the best for a lot more besides. It has the best memory management, device management, shell, file systems, i/o management, low level device interaction and package management I know of. Its also easily the most secure after BSD.
Windows is a ****ty OS (see above, it does all of these things abysmally) but necessary if you want to play games and use popular expensive commercial software. Although a fair amount of that will work with a nudge its not worth the hassle of running unsupported in a production environment.
Oh and OSX is somewhere in between. Although the much vaunted 'BSD core' is just far too tedious due to the mach kernel to really compete with true BSD or Linux imho. BBQ makes me hungry for more... |

Linux is great if you want to live under the illusion that you are a "hacker" from 1983 ~OR~ want to work with configuring server software.
Not so great if you want to use your computer for anything besides chatting/surfing.

Err what? There's a crap load of user friendly GUI based distributions out there, CLI based ones are the rare ones.
But it does carry it's risks: https://github.com/MrMEEE/bumblebee/commit/a047be85247755cdbe0acce6#diff-1

They've been saying that since the 90-ies. It's just BS.

Linux has its uses. Everytime I go abroad I carry with me a netbook with no HD and a bootable linux distro by pendrive tailored to my needs which are simply Email/Web browsing. I carry a lot of sensitive data and this configuration has worked for me the best these past years. If I somehow managed to lose my netbook or the pendrive all would be ok in the world. Not so much if I carried a regular PC/Windows lapper.
After losing my first lappy of doom and the awfulness of all that it entailed, I now travel exlcusively with said aforementioned netbook/pendrive, both easily replaceable.

Linux is a great replacement for windows for people who do not need to game or do business stuff on the bleeding edge. I mean someone who only does email and minor office like stuff could very likely do just fine with Linux, Firefox/Chrome and a Google account(Gmail and Google Docs).
If I did not game id likely do the Linux switch since my other activity is fully Linux compatible(hobby CG work with Blender and outputting to Luxrender, both are native to Linux, as is Gimp for post work if I desire to use Gimp)
