Edited by: Simon Falls on 14/07/2011 00:51:35 Carriers should really carry any player manned ship up to it's capacity in place of Fighters or Fighter Bombers. While retaining their hauling ability (cargo hold) they should/could more actively and usefully carry manned ships.
Then the strength of the carrier would then be stuffing it full of useful players that were flying useful ships and fixing one of the problems with Supercaps Online... I mean, the combination of bombers and frigates (crusiers) would be pretty interesting and it could require players instead of drones further enabling younger players a purpose.
In the interim, what's a carrier to do? Hey fit guns, siege, rep, electronics, pods in support of your squadron.
At the very least that would be a terrific way to differentiate the usefulness of Supercap Mom's and standard Carriers. Where Mom's carry real ships and real people and standard Carriers can carry the drone Fighters and Fighter Bombers. At least in the case of Supercap Carriers such a development would offer some mitigation to small (high skill point) force projection as the need for real people inside the super tanked Supercap Carriers would be immediately felt.

Different versions of this have been talked about for some time. The biggest problem, according to a DEV, is programming/coding it in. Apparently the game code and database doesn't like having more than one player in any one ship at the same time. _______________________

Edited by: Hotfoot on 14/07/2011 01:07:41 Thanks for the reply. I think it'd be worth the update to the database structure. It's not a 'hard' correction to the database structure, but it involves a re-write of basic association.
From a game play point of view it would be dynamic and exciting to pour out of the hold and fight. This direction has a unique and useful way to introduce newer players to fleet combat and is in line with the the Dust vision.
From a metagame point of view, carriers (supercap carriers), can't 'hold onto' player assets so it's just like a neutral 0.0 npc space station with the exception that a cap should be able to eject ship/cargo normally.

Edited by: Simon Falls on 14/07/2011 02:55:38 The more I think about it the more I believe the simplest solution is to make Supercap Carriers (Mom's) carry living breathing people and their ships. Not a Titan Bridge (nerf incoming), but a real solution to getting people places with real assets.
Whether a Nyx pop's out 40 Dramiels, 40 Manticores, or a couple of Black Ops battleships who then bridge in a bunch of Manticores.
Very flexible Supercap Carriers hauling troops to battle is win vs. Titan Portal from a POS. If the troops are peeps pouring out it's a real fight not some drone induced addiction.
The Supercaps are then on the field, it takes pilots to fly the ships in the fight (player vs. player pvp imagine), and the Mom's can carry any ships that fit in the hold with their pilots. Simon

The problem with the database is in its basic design. So to change it they would have to completely redesign it.
CCP found the problem when they tried to introduce the original idea of Titans as mobile stations that people could dock at and then have the Titan jump.
There is an old post with the details of the problem done by a dev. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |
