Hiya all,
I've been told that with maxed skills in the appropriate areas that Tech II has advantages over Meta 4 items.
However, (and I'm looking specifically at ECM right now) I can't see it. All I see is same strength ECM, same range, same falloff and lower CPU requirements.
What am I missing here, or is the poster 3rd from bottom on the comments on this loadout HERE talking from his brownest orifice?

Tech II items can be manufactured by players. So their main advantage is availability and often a lower price than meta4.
That said the meta4 items are often as good as tech II and have lower fitting requirements.
The big exception are weapons wich have the same base stats as meta4 but have an additional skill that gives them a damage bonus, effectively making them do more damage than meta4. You also need tech II weapons to use the specialized tech II ammunitions.
For ECM modules the meta4 variants are actually better than tech II. They have the same strength but are easier to fit and use less capacitor to activate.

Edited by: Raistlim on 14/07/2011 23:40:09 T2 is not always better than meta 4. A good example for that are Armor Plates. Look at the 1600mm Rolled Tungsten Plate. It has the same ammount of Armor HP than their T2 counterpart but it is easier to fit and adds less mass to your ship so you're faster. One of the advantages of T2 is that it can be manufactured so you dont have to rely on loot drops or imports from a trade hub (at least in really deep 0.0).
And for your second Question. Yes the 3rd last comment on your linked site was clueless about ECM. You dont have to believe me. Just download EFT, fit a ECM ship with both T2 and meta 4 jammers and set it to 'all level v'. You wont see a difference in the range or the jam strength between meta 4 and T2 but meta 4 is easier to fit and needs less cap.

Thanks to you both.
I thought I was right, but with that comment I figured being *relatively* new (18 months old) that I had missed some fundamental point.
Glad to see that the poster on that thread was just as stupid as his comment.

Generally yes, but not always. For instance, T2 weapons are indeed arguably better than the corresponding meta4 weapons, even at L1 skills (they always deal more damage, can also use T2 ammo which can deal a lot more damage, and have otherwise mostly identical stats - except fitting and, where applicable, firing cost, where they fare worse). ECM, armor plates and a few other things however, T2 is always flat out worse. _

I don't think anyone else has mentioned the other thing, which is that meta 4 are usually more expensive than t2 - in some cases by a LOT.

Usually just those that are better, but exceptions exist (high skill requirements on popular T2 modules, for instance - see heavy missile launchers) _

I use "EveMon" to compare modules for ships. I can then use Eve Fitting Tool (EFT) to take a closer look at the effects with my skills.
EveMon has a great interface for comparing modules browse them in the "Item Browser" and multi select by holding down control. EveMon will show the modules side by side with colour coded attributes to show better neutral or worse parameters. I don't think it takes your skills into account....

Here is the secret, Meta 4's are not really for new players to be using, they are there to provide near or identical T2 performance with lesser fitting requirements. You'll find that for popular pvp modules, quite a lot of the meta4s are far higher in price than the T2 module. The T2 will often provide some little extra such as the use of T2 ammo, or be cheaper than meta 4s due to being able to be mass produced instead of having a tiny drop rate.
