I'm suggesting I've been playing shoot-em-up games longer than most people in EVE have been alive. Before computers we were out in the yard throwing water balloons at each other - neighborhood-wide water balloon wars. Hysterical.
I've killed, slain, exploded, blown-up, fried, toasted and derezzed enough mobs to last three lifetimes. I play EVE because there are OTHER things to do in the game. If you want to call me a Carebear, I have a string of exwives that'll argue the point with you.
I've gotten all that hostility and need to teabag somebody for adrenalin rushes and ego inflation out of my system with my last foray in the field - Battlefield 2. (If you really want to PvP, try that one out. The bullets actually work. You get no armor tank, unless it's a .... tank.)
I'm BORED with shooting stuff. I've done it thousands and thousands and thousands of times. I wanna do something else. BUILD something. Yeah. Start with nothing and make it into something.
Just remember, when you go to replace that PvP ship with a new one, rearm, refit, those doodads came from somewhere...if you don't recall making them yourself, someone else musta done it.
"Carebear?" That's a term the ego-tripping "still got a ways to go" people use as a sort of PUT DOWN. It makes me larf. I used to shoot your daddy every day. Now he has a kid with a gun. My kid is in-game shooting you now.

You are not a carebear, no carebear would ever waste the ISK on such a silly thing as functionaless eye-sphincter... you are now a fop... plain and simply.
Carebears are pragramtic ISK makers, a Fop is you... trash that eye-plug and you may find some respect again, but for now you are a laughing stock.

QFT
Problem is CCP is patching more and more stuff killing the fun for carebears and those who just want to have some fun PvE wise. Latest coup was the removal of unscannable ships and that really ****ed me off. It wasnt like you were immortal with one, actually you had some considerable drawbacks in survivability while PvEing, it was just a chance to survive alone in low security space if you acted smart enough. Now you are just screwed. Only chance to do something in low sec is do join a PvP based corp right now.

You don't have to be 100% carebear to have high standings with some NPC entity. You don't have to be a carebear to also be an industrialist. You can always create jumpclones in 0.0 stations and in Clone Vat Bays.
So, an EVE without carebears, you say ? Prices would shift, markets would experience some increased volatility, relative earnings for various occupations would change, we would have far, FAR less supercapitals, and not much else.
But that's besides the point. So many people are carebears that nothing of essence would be lost if the carebear population would be drastically reduced.
Any INDIVIDUAL carebear is as good as irrelevant. Any entire subclass of carebears is expendable. All carebears as a whole are merely a CONVENIENT part of EVE.
An EVE without carebears could very well potentially be a much more fun EVE. But we'll never have that, since most people are carebears.

Akita with all those assumptions, could you please do me a favor and define 'carebear'. :-)
An old established definition would be: "One who does not PvP".
My take on that is that by logging into EvE one is PvP'ing by definition, and thus by definition can not be a carebear. In the same way as someone engaging in a multiplayer match in CoD or SC can not be a carebear.
The term carebear is traditionally used in MMOs with distinct separation of PvE and PvP content, a separation that does not exist in EvE.

EVE carebear : a player with such a high personal "risk aversion" factor that makes him try to avoid as much as possible any form of PvP in which he has a non-negligible chance of losing something.
You can have carebear PvPers (a.k.a. "gankbears"), you can have carebear 0.0 dwellers (a.k.a. "AFK-cloak whiners"), you can even have carebear traders (the type that starts flooding you with evemails as soon as you start "interfering ") and so on and so forth.
Going by that definition, the overwhelming vast majority of EVE players are either (partial or complete) carebears themselves, or at least have carebear alts The rest are either reckless, bored, inexperienced, stupid, PLEX sellers (or RMT ISK purchasers) or an arbitrary combination of any or all of the previously mentioned attributes.

That sounds like someone who have taken Sun Tzu to heart. "Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win"
But in a game that philosophy is a bit boring. Eve doesn't really need those, I agree with that. But its hard to avoid in a game where the risk factor is so high. At the other end of the scale are people who charge into battle blind, because there is no risk at all. Typical WoT or WoW behaviour.
Quote:
EVE totally hopeless carebear : EVE carebear that is also complaining the game is full of griefers and that he just can't have any fun times no matter what he tries.
...
You can have carebear PvPers ("gankbears", "blobbers", etc), you can have carebear 0.0 dwellers (deep blue sea types, NAPfests, "AFK-cloak whiners", etc), you can even have carebear traders (the type that starts flooding you with evemails as soon as you start "interfering ") and so on and so forth.
Sounds more like sore losers in general. I think we all fall into that category from time to time.
Quote:
Going by that first definition, the overwhelmingly vast majority of EVE players are either (at least partial if not complete) carebears themselves or have carebear alts. A noticeable portion of them are actually "totally hopeless carebears". The rest are either bored, rich, reckless, inexperienced, stupid, ISK buyers (PLEX or RMT) or an arbitrary combination of any or all of the previously mentioned attributes.
See now the word starts to be so inclusive that it has no meaning at all. Then we might just use the word "Eve players" ;)
I think I often fall into another category of carebears. Those who willingly fly into dangerous space to grab the riches and run away before I get shot to smithereens. I must admit I do enjoy listening to the whining that sometimes ensues when a small fleet or a single pilot are robbed of the opportunity of a killmail. I see this activity to be somewhat similar to running with the flag in any "Capture the flag" scenario of arena-style PvP in other games. Yet the stamp of 'carebear' is inevitable.
Sometimes it seems the only way not to be a carebear is to foolishly charge into the nearest blob guns blazing. In the end EvE seems to be a game that is not about Player vs Player, but Carebear vs Carebear. Without Carebears the EvE population would probably be less than a thousand.

You would've loved star wars galaxies back in the day. The crafting system was insanely complex and while you made a type of item the same as everyone else. The quality and stats of the items were unique based on the quality of the materials used, your skill, skill bonuses and a little bit of luck. Quality of materials varied wildly and were not always available, there were 100's of 'polymer' but only a few were any good and maybe 1 or 2 decent. The last 'spawn' of super great polymer may have been many months ago and to make top of the line stuff you had to be ready to mobilise instantly to drop harvesters should an uber spawn come along.
But when you finally made a top of the line, as in best of something on the entire server, it was hugely satisfying. From Laser rifles to Comp Mini Suits, I made the best **** on Ahazi for nearly a year PreCU/NGE, then I made 100's of thousands of grenades post Patch 13...yawn
I miss that game...still.

SWG pre-NGE was just awesome and I miss it something fierce. I loved crafting in that game and scouting out rich deposits of resources then plopping down my harvesters. Sad that SOE had to go and muck it all up.

Best proof that most EVE players are the "carebear" type : http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1493997&page=14#410
The highest steady subscriber growth EVER was linked to the release of the "Quantum Rise" expansion, generally regarded as a mostly "meh" expansion... while the expansion hailed as the best recent one ("Apocrypha") which was heavily PvP-oriented (w-space) has actually caused a slow and steady loss in subs combined with a reduced average time spent online.
