Edited by: Firenze93 on 16/07/2011 02:35:35 Hi all,
I was just wondering how do OTLs affect sentries? I understand that they increase the sentries range and tracking, but does that help them do more DPS? Does the +tracking help them hit harder?
I'm kinda a noob, so any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

Edited by: Firenze93 on 16/07/2011 02:39:23 Also, here's the setup that I will most likely run, once I confirm using OTL's are the best choice:
[Dominix, L4 missions] Power Diagnostic System II Large Armor Repairer II Large Armor Repairer II Armor Kinetic Hardener II Armor Kinetic Hardener II Armor Thermic Hardener II Armor Thermic Hardener II
Omnidirectional Tracking Link I Omnidirectional Tracking Link I Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II
Dual 250mm Carbide Railgun I, Iridium Charge L Dual 250mm Carbide Railgun I, Iridium Charge L Dual 250mm Carbide Railgun I, Iridium Charge L Dual 250mm Carbide Railgun I, Iridium Charge L Dual 250mm Carbide Railgun I, Iridium Charge L Drone Link Augmentor I
Large Capacitor Control Circuit I Large Capacitor Control Circuit I Large Sentry Damage Augmentor I
Garde II x5 Hobgoblin II x5 Hammerhead II x5 Warden II x5
All critiques and comments welcome!
Edit: Yes, I know that't a lot of tank, but it's better to be safe than sorry! (at least until I get more comfortable with L4s...)

Tracking improves chance to hit, particularly against smaller ships. Less misses is higher damage.
Range helps damage output too. I believe drones work on the optimal + falloff system. If so then they do full damage within their optimal but gradually decreasing damage out to optimal plus double falloff. Increased range means your damage is penalised less when shooting things in falloff.

Edited by: Beef Knuckleback on 16/07/2011 04:25:50 OTLs do not directly boost raw sentry DPS the way that the SDA rig does. What they do is increase their tracking speed and optimal range, effectively enabling them to score hits further out, and to apply damage more effectively to smaller targets. Elite frigates will still give you some trouble, but cruisers and battlecruisers melt pretty fast with a couple of OTLs.
I have three OTLs and an SDA on my Rattlesnake. At only Gallente BS III the damage hasn't been optimized, but check out these numbers:
Garde II base tracking - 0.036 Garde II x3 omnids - 0.0622
Warden II base tracking - 0.012 Warden II x3 omnids - 0.02
Garde II optimal range - 24km Garde II x3 omnids - 49.766km
Warden II optimal range - 60km Warden II x3 omnids - 124.416km
Numbers will be a smidge lower for two omnids - roughly 40km for Garde II optimal iirc.
The real advantage here is the ability to apply Garde II DPS at Warden I optimal range. Makes short work of those Serpentis BS that like to orbit at 50. :)
Also, don't forget about Curators - a mix of Curators and Gardes (instead of Wardens and Gardes) works quite well for Rogue Drones, Sansha and Blood Raider missions.
Edit - oh, and the OTLs also (of course) boost the optimal and tracking of scouts, mediums and heavies. If you intend to run a sentry boat they're a better choice over drone navigation computers... though a pair of those will almost double drone speed. Consider switching OTLs for DNCs on the small handful of missions where everything is under Garde optimal and heavy drones make more sense - namely Damsel in Distress.

Edited by: Akuma Tsukai on 16/07/2011 04:43:21 TL;DR version Without 2 of those you are better off with heavies. For a complete sentry ownage add 1-2 TPs. As for your build it is horribly overtanked but will do. ---- Drones eat everything. Trust me. |

Sweet thanks for the info! I might even try to fit a target painter on there

Sentries are potentially the faster option if you stay at the screen while doing missions. With a specialised fit, you don't have to wait for them to navigate from one target to the next, and the dps is slightly higher.
You need near perfect drone skills to do this well, though, and once you've got those trained you might as well just use the heavy drones instead. This allows you to run your missions semi-afk, while doing something more interesting. --- 34.4:1 mineral compression |
