Ok , we had a tough and long discussion today in corp channel about training the skills that contribute to the 5 main skills . All of us know that we can improve and add up to 5 points to each of the main / prime skills by training the appropriate skill like for example let say my memory skill is 9 so if I train the skill Instant Recall to level 5 this will add 5 points to starting 9 points = 14 memory skill points .
The question was if I buy a new Instant Recall pack from the market can I train it again to level 5 and this will add 5 more memory points to the 14 I allready have or that is not possible ?? Some says yes and others says no we can't so I thought of posting it here in the forum to get clear answers from dev's and experts of the game .

Edited by: Seldoon Nemar on 24/02/2005 19:19:29 You can buy another Instant Recall, but you can't train it again. You can however buy an advanced learning skillbook for the appropriate attribute and gain an additional 5.

Essentially, you can only learn one of each skillpack in the game.
However, most skillpacks have other skills as prerequisites to training. Obvious examples are Cruiser skills requiring frigate and spaceship command skills to certain levels.
Specifically to your question: While you cannot train the SAME skill again to get more points, there happens to be an advanced learning skill corresponding to each basic one, which has a prerequisite of the basic skill to 5. So one you have, for instance, Instant Recall to 5, you can train Eidatic Memory to 1 and onwards.
Currently you can get up to +5 with the basic skills and a further +5 with the advanced ones.
It is generally held that getting the advanced learning skills to level 5 (as opposed to 4) would not "pay off" in terms of time spent, for over 2 years. Therefore you should aim to have at least 4 (most PvP combat charachters dont bother with Charisma, but its needed for trade and agent related skills) of the Advanced learning skills to level 4 reasonably quickly.
The skill "Learning" is worth having to lev 5 as well.

dunno about that, teaching complete n00bs to spend 9+ days training something when they only have 2 weeks in their trial isn't exactly what i recommend anyone to do.
*shrug* and training learning skills beyond lvl3 should be thought of in terms of the law of diminishing returns. Do you want that cruiser now? or wait not only 9+ days for only to train that cruiser skill anyways with only a few hours shaved?
Personally, one probably loses more time forgetting to switch skills after the old one levels up than any time saved through learning skills beyond lvl3. ______________________ Best darned links ingame and out (backup) |

This person is clearly past their first two weeks.
Anyone playing this game for longer than a couple of months would be foolish not to have the advanced learning skills to 3 or 4. Dimishing returns do not kick in until Adv Learnings to 5

as regards this particular thread, i'd probably suggest they take a close look at whether or not it's time to take that plunge, but let's not forget there's alot of n00bs who read these forums and might get the wrong impression if we hadn't included a little disclaimer. hmmm? especially since we hardly see any difference in 'conventional wisdom' regarding learning skills whether or NOT we're dealing with a n00b or not.

hmmmm...and as for hard data. here ______________________ Best darned links ingame and out (backup) |

I can't comment on the specific mathematics of it or how this has changed with new skills since exodus, but I do remember that specifically Learning 5 was a waste to train. When you looked at the gain you got, the 35 days it took to train learning 5 was less than the time benefit you recieved cumulative from all other skills once you had learning 5.
Depending on how close the margin was, it may or may not have changed with regards to exodus skills, but since it takes forever to train all the skills, and many people will end up specializing anyway, I would say it is safe not to train learning lvl 5 until you have 10 million skill points or so.

Thanks friends for clearing out this point , I really was somehow suspicious about the possibility of training the same skill twice or more .
