How can a question be desceptred? Arguably my opinions represent to an extent the opinions of my alliance and in particular circumstances give rise to a valid "casus belli" claim. |

Quite a few people unsubbed during the MT controversy. It'll take a while to repair the damage CCP did. If that is even possible, that is.
Oh, and it's summer.

PCU can't go down, but monthly PCU can, and it is going down, it is because of summer holidays.
However, the monthly PCU was going down before summer, it is weird, because the active paying subscriptions are going up. They reached an all time high this month at 375k ( note that this is in the beginning of the month ).
So in the end, the Incarna debacle netted them a substantial growth, I can only assume this is because of the player protests and the reaction of CCP. Wether CCP really takes into account the CSM and/or player protests, to the outside world it looks like they do, and so more new players join.

1) summer, so its low anyways 2) Incarna wasn't good enough to hold ppl on to playing, the novelty wears out after...1h? There is nothing to do, and everything else was shiny too (turrets). 3) the MT-debacle didn't help, many ppl are on a break right now, many are just skilling or skillplexing, without login on

Yes I think you are right, my main is am also still subbed, but hardly playing, just setting skills ( and I got a 3 month payment plan ).
I think many players are just taking a bit of a distance from the game, but stay subbed, looking what CCP will be doing next.
Still they gained a substantial increass in subs. ( +10k from June to July ).

Well, in some interview they did say they got a good influx of new players (trials mostly) following Incarna, and it sounds plausible. But lets look of what is left of this influx in 2-3 months, as Incarna does well as a Tutorial, but then it just stops (nothing to do in CQ for ppl who started for that).
And i think many underestimate the problem of ppl "holding out" for CCP to do something. Yes, they are still paying a sub, but they don't fill their previous roles in their corporations anymore, and that does indeed become a problem for many. Once your Corp/Friends don't add to your gaming experience anymore, you quickly realize how boring EVE-features really are. Its no sologame you enjoy for long.

For the last 7 years, the PCU have always gone down during summer. People are out grilling, going on vacation etc. So this is not something new. You can check statistics on www.eve-offline.net I think.

it may be better, when ccp makes the nwe turrets and CQ optional.
I know, that are holydays, but somewhere the users goes not over 42k.

I think another reason why the numbers are lower right now is because CCP did another mass banning of bots and so on. I have heard that there is plenty of griping and complaining on "certain" forums about banned accounts.
Also, even though it is summer, it is unusual for the numbers to drop this much. I have been playing for going on 6 years now, and I don't remember the summer's numbers dropping this much in the past. It's probably the combination of the Incarna fiasco, the banning of bots, and the summer time things people do in my opinion.

Is there actually numerical data available somewhere on pcu and subscriber count? I know of
http://eve-offline.net/?server=tranquility
But that is not a table of numbers, its a plot, and says nothing about the number of subscribers.

You can check my site MMOData.net
I just received the latest numbers from CCP and will update soon.
What I can tell you right now is that they increased subs to 375k on July 1, from 366k on June 1. ( these numbers are active paying accounts and so does not include trials )

Just one problem: previous years have shown that the PCUs go up during the summer, most likely from a combination of summer patch releases bringing people (back) in and from people having more free time during their vacations.
So no, "summer" does not explain why we're having such low numbers ù if anything, it shows that they would have been even lower due to the failure of Incarna if it hadn't been for people having nothing better to do with their time. ùùù ôWe want to try this thing called micro-transactions, but we don't know what it is. I can't help but notice this, but it looks like the same thing happened between Tyrannis and Incursions.
Notice the large dip in between the 2 and then take a look at the dip in between Inc and CQ, and how the bar is only beginning to rise from the introduction of CQ.
And if you take a look at the trends throughout the years, one would be able to logically assume that later on in the year, we may just see a larger "triangle."
But you probably wouldn't take that into consideration, since taking ongoing information and graphs and using them to support your failed arguments at the most beneficial time is beneficial to you and the very small amount of derps that are still making the forums wet with tears. You mean, the "trend" of going from steady growth with minor fluctuations to slower overall growth with larger and larger fluctuations ?
P.S. And if you insist on "new data" - the graph had data about 2 weeks old, and the current post-CQ trend is already on the downwards slope, what you see on the graph above was most likely the high point already. _

Fluctuations or not, the playerbase will, presumably, continue to grow. So I guess all the raging and quitting didn't really matter. But, this was stated a few times over the course of the unholy forum rage. I've also seen many points invalidating a lot of the arguments that are still spawning redundant topics. That's the problem - it's no longer a near-certainty. In fact, it's quite likely the overall growth has stagnated, or might even start to reverse, if it hasn't already. But you can't say for sure thanks to the ever-larger fluctuations.
P.S. And please don't even attempt to shove me in with the "waah, waah, protest over monocles and AUR, threats to quit" bunch. Especially since I held the exact opposite viewpoint in that debacle. _

Of course it matters. We're almost a month out now, and Incarna completely failed to produce the patch bump one would have expected. ùùù ôWe want to try this thing called micro-transactions, but we don't know what it is. The PCU is the max players online between any two "normal" downtimes.

This graph shows that with the last few expansions, customer satisfaction has become increasingly unstable (or big hype with equally big disappointment) and that Apocrypha was a resounding success with no one quitting over it (or as many signing up as going away).
So it seems CCP has issues with expectation management and/or production quality since about Tyrannis. --------
