Hi!
In this thread I want to introduce you in a little, special project i've startet this weekend.
I am playing MMOGs for years and it is real fun to master the challenges, with or without friends, chat and so one.
But EvE is a special pearl in this see of games, the sandbox offers me a way to play no other game offer.
And so I try to start to go a way no other MMORPG I know would allow me to go.
I want to improve my char and his own little empire without to kill a virtual being, equal if it is a player or an NPC.
DonĘt misunderstood; IĘve no problem with fighting against pixel. But it is boring that EVERY game forces you to become a mass murdering butcher to improve your char.
EvE overs me the chance to go another way and so I will reach my 50 billion ISK boarder without leaving Jita and wrote about this here.
Do you want to join me on this journey? 8)
Regards, Hank.
P.S.: And sorry for my bad English, IĘm still learning.
Chapter I, Jita:
The station was glowing in a silver shade of light, laying on the black velvet called universe. Shuttlesensors scanning the space around and a docking request was transmitted to the station. Now im here a speechless voice sayed.
To fulfil the bet with my master, that it is possible to build an empire out of nothing.
The man in the capsul used the sensors to scan every little corner of the station he approaching.
Here, in the hearth of life, the rotten core of the four empires. It would become funnyą

Plenty of mercs out there, to do the killing for you. I'm sure 50 billion will get at least some of their interest. Welcome to EVE

What's different between playing the AH in WoW and playing the market in EVE?
don't really see how "omg I can make a ton of in-game currency without engaging in combat" is unique to EVE.

The difference is in the complexity and deep.
In EvE i could trade in an mutch komplexer way then in WoW, i could produce, invent, i could do region wide trade with transport contracts and so on.
Try to reach level 85 in WoW without leaving stromwind. ;)

I am not exactly sure what "building an empire" means to you. To me it definitely isn't just about acquiring X amount of personal wealth. If you try to build anything resembling an empire, or even a small guild, you must be ready to face your opposition. Unless you intend on making so much money to just pay everyone to leave you alone - in which case expect more and more people taking you up on that deal.
Even Red Frog - a company exclusively focused on hauling - has to deal with wardecs and ganks. ---

Yes, building an empire is more then earning money.
The 50 billion ISK goal is the border i've set for the Kill-no-one project.
There will be more, including a corp but ive to wait what experimental projects will work bevore i could go into details.
Hey, im german! I do not release a project without exact planing, testing, recalibration, second testing and approval. ;)

If the goal is to make money via trade alone, you never have to reach beyond L5 really in WoW. Infact my best trade alt was L2.
If you are interested in crafting to make money, then you do indeed have to level beyond that.
Even in Stormwind you are not safe though. You can still be ganked in the AH there. Especially at lower levels.
Good luck with this "non WoW" based venture all the same!

The utility of ISK (high - you can get just about ANYTHING in EVE with it) vs the utility of WoW gold ("meh"). But other than that, yeah, you're right, there's not much of a practical difference between the WoW AH and a meld of the EVE market/contracts system.
P.S. I highly recommend leaving Jita (positioning yourself at least 1j away in the same region) and training the three remote trade skills to a least L2 (L2 gives you a range up to 5j away) so you can trade IN Jita, but not BE in Jita (so, not subjected to the brain-melting "local" spam nor the occasional lag spikes there). _

Edited by: Hank van DaMer on 20/07/2011 13:05:35 One point is, that most items in EvE are player generated and so it must pass the market to reach the end user.
In WoW the end content items are nearly 98% drop stuff and a big part is soulbound, too.
But thats not the point.
You have many options additionell to the simple sell and buy game and thats where the fun is. It starts by the trading via different markets, politic based market speculation (technetium price anyone? ;) ), supply chain buliding and so on.
And the biggest differnt is that u dont need to kill to train und supplie you char for "the end game", what effer the end game will be for you.
THATS my point.
I could decide to do station trading the next year and when the year is over and i want to do something different i dont have to start from ground. I could use the skills ive learned, buy some nice and fency ships and make my way. I dont nead to start up with a Iblis, my char has done some improvement.
Dam, its so difficult to explain it for me in english. I fear i couldn't bring it to the point... :(

that's a lot of cooking & fishing dailies
(xp from gathering professions would be a nice way to lvl without combat but would require you to leave the city)
edit: that argument is more about the lack of a character bazaar than about market features, though Akita has of course a valid point.

This looks pretty interesting. If hope you'll keep us all updated on your methods and such; it'd be really interesting to see a sort of "open source" trading journal.

Thats my plan, Adonis. Thank you for your interest.
--------
The problem is, that there is no way to set the game improvement in relation.
Whats the analogy of lvl 85 in wow in EvE?
Skill points couldn't because your char skills permanent, independant from your game commitment.
So ive choose ISK as a indicator. Its not ideal but the only thing i found.

Chapter II, lets get the party started
The man, sitting in front of the flat screen, leans against the seat back and talk to himself.
OK, what do we need? At first ū money. Then we need opportunities.
His fingers start flying over the controls of the Neocom.
So, starter credit about 10 millions accepted, time to payback in two weeks. (found via some ingame small talk) ThatĘs a beginning.
His eyes sparkle.
OK, and nową We have a buy / sell market. So lets buy high and sell low. Or so.
He smiles and opens the market on the giant screen on the wall. Again he touched the neocron controls and called the market overview.
IĘve to find products with a spread between buy and sell orders bigger then my transaction costs so I can work as broker between the sell and buy orders.
OK, what kind of product is in massive use and must be replaced often?
He smiles again and surfed through the market.
Combat moduls (PvP T2 equip) seems to be the right choiseą
Then he starts to set some buy orders with the highest offer on station. A view hours later the first goods are in his stock and he start to create sell orders with the lowest price on station.
Only a few minutes where gone when he sold the first pieces and make a profit of 8%.

I met someone on a RP server that never damaged any npc and never ran, just walked. He actually lived in Stormwind and never left the city once he got there.
I have no idea how high he eventually managed to level, but 85 was not possible at the time.
There was a catch, however: he would not damage anything, but as a priest he would happily heal. --- I don't know! I don't know why I did it, I don't know why I enjoyed it, and I don't know why I'll do it again! Bart Simpson. |
